  • In this video for IB Environmental systems and societies (IB ESS) topic 2.4 Biomes, zonation and succession, we focus on the world's major aquatic and terrestrial biomes. First, we look at the major factors that determine the way biomes are distributed around the globe: incoming sunlight or insolation, average temperature, and precipitation patterns. We examine how the tricellular model of Earth's atmosphere influences those precipitation patterns, and we also compare the productivity and biodiversity of several major biome types.
Key ESS terminology to take away from this video include:
    - aquatic biomes (freshwater and marine)
    - terrestrial biomes (based on land)
    - tundra
    - taiga (coniferous forest)
    - temperate deciduous forest (trees that drop their leaves seasonally)
    - tropical rainforest
    - desert
    - tricellular model of the atmosphere
    - biome shifts due to climate change

Thanks a lot! That was a great recap for me. I would suggest discussing more how winds are formed and how they transfer heat.

Great suggestion! I'll keep that in mind when I'm making videos for the new ESS syllabus. I plan to start releasing new content at the start of the upcoming school year in August 2024.
