Great reaction, great album, Bowie in his hardest "rock star, cabaret star" mode. Insane lyrics and piano by Garson.
At the end of your Bowie journey you will be amazed at how many phases, voices, styles, etc one man is capable of. By the way, you can't have any expectations when starting a new Bowie album!

I've been a Bowie fan for 40 years and each and every new album that came out made me react exactly as you did, "I don't love this." But... then I would. Every single album felt distant and weird but by the third listen they'd open up to me.

As a young Bowie fan, first getting into him was rough at times. This album especially, I’d expected so much more. Songs like Panic In Detroit, Watch That Man, Jean Genie or Cracked Actor were all skips for me. But now, like they’re fucking phenomenal songs. I just needed to sorta leave my personal comfort zone and get to know the songs, and once I did Bowie became my favorite artist ever.

There's always one cover on these earlier Bowie albums that just shouldn't be there. Let's Spend the Night Together is a big bag of wank. I always miss that one out. The rest of the album is spot on. Time, Lady Grinning Soul and the tile track are sublime. 1913, 1938, 197? are the years before the world wars....the seventies one never happened!

Hi Alex. Just stumbled on your videos tonight as I love all things Bowie. I've watched the Lodger, Hunky Dory and Aladdin Sane ones now and I'm loving the format.
Its fascinating, to me, hearing someone discover it all for the first time and have a quite different take that I did.
I think our music favorite music tastes might be quite different but I'm keen to see more of what you really enjoy.
I'm 42 and first heard Bowie in 1989 when someone gave me a copy of the ChangesOne greatest hits.
Question for you...are you looking at the lyrics when listening?
Part of what I love about Bowie (but its something which took me a good bit of time to discover / appreciate) are the references in the songs. I think you'll come back to a lot of stuff after a while and the amount of depth to the lyrics can take you down massive rabbit holes.
If you like, I'll bore you with the story behind Watch That Man! 😀

About Pinups, it actually got decent reviews, but it's all covers of all 60's Britpop. The album is worth owning for his excellent cover of Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play" which is at least as good as the original.

At this point in David's career when he released this album he had become a star (thanks to the success of Ziggy Stardust). The overall sound reflects this as the production is bigger. I think David once described it as the American version of Ziggy stardust meaning that it doesn't have the punch of originality as the Ziggy album but works better theatrically (that piano on Time is pure vaudeville).

Greetings, I'm from Russia and watch your channel. I came across a video from Joy Division and really want to hear your opinion about the Russian band Chimera, the Zudva album. This is the most depressing shit that exists in the Russian underground, the lead singer Eduard Starkov also hanged himself. The music is dominated by an interesting mixture of overloaded guitars, cellos and trumpets, and all this is damn depressing. If you are reading this comment let me know. Thank you. You can find this album on Deezer. Title - Химера - Zudwa

The critics hated this album at first and they didn't like Bowie in general at the time. After Ziggy Stardust, Hunky Dory and the Man Who Sold the World, he got stoned, dramatic, pretentious, and difficult. I was a fan, but it took me years to approach this album because of the terrible reviews it got. I eventually loved it and maybe, more accurately, got used to it. At least the cover is one of the most iconic pieces of art in rock history. The production, though, sounds muddy and murky, unlike his earlier stuff.

This album marked the end of the Ziggy character and the transition to Bowie as standalone artist. You probably noticed that the Spiders are much less prominent, and there is more of a consistent theme. Bowie had already been handing off the "glam" songs off to others, as that wasn't the direction he was going. I agree that the lad insane is about Terry: this is around the time that Bowie tried to spring him from the asylum and care for him - though one could hardly imagine a more incapable pair to offer help than David and Angela during this period. "Pin Ups" showed some background to Bowie's influences, though it was mainly something to market to a few fans following the final tour with the Spiders. "Diamond Dogs" was the dark crash into the pit from which everything later would evolve. Though it was his only commercial "hit," glad you're skipping "Young Americans"!
