Thank you for sharing this album, Alex. It's great to know the younger generation is learning about this special album and that the music David and I made decades ago is still compelling.
Hi Mike! Never expected to see you here.
You certainly slayed it on this record, great work. Thanks for stopping by!
@@AlexHaitz Pretty amazing!
bruh
A lot of his tracks grow on you, six months later your humming it.
LADY GRINNING SOUL IS ONE OF THE MOST BEAUTIFUL SONGS I'VE HEARD IN MY LIFE.
Facts !!
Absolutely gorgeous song!
The title track is a work of art. Always good to see people enjoy that track. Sheer brilliance.
Great reaction, great album, Bowie in his hardest "rock star, cabaret star" mode. Insane lyrics and piano by Garson.
At the end of your Bowie journey you will be amazed at how many phases, voices, styles, etc one man is capable of. By the way, you can't have any expectations when starting a new Bowie album!
I'm already impressed and I have 6 albums to go!
Nice Bowie binge. Looking forward to the next round!
I've been a Bowie fan for 40 years and each and every new album that came out made me react exactly as you did, "I don't love this." But... then I would. Every single album felt distant and weird but by the third listen they'd open up to me.
As a young Bowie fan, first getting into him was rough at times. This album especially, I’d expected so much more. Songs like Panic In Detroit, Watch That Man, Jean Genie or Cracked Actor were all skips for me. But now, like they’re fucking phenomenal songs. I just needed to sorta leave my personal comfort zone and get to know the songs, and once I did Bowie became my favorite artist ever.
If you review Diamond Dogs I think you'll really dig the song "We are the Dead".
if you do come back to one, you should come back to Diamond Dogs. One of my favorites!
Favorite Kojima's album
There's always one cover on these earlier Bowie albums that just shouldn't be there. Let's Spend the Night Together is a big bag of wank. I always miss that one out. The rest of the album is spot on. Time, Lady Grinning Soul and the tile track are sublime. 1913, 1938, 197? are the years before the world wars....the seventies one never happened!
Except for Garson's piano, I agree.
Agreed. Across the Universe is an even worse cover.
@@sukie584 On Hunky, Fill Your Heart should have been Bombers, on Ziggy, It Aint Easy should have been Velvet Goldmine. On Aladdin, Let's Spend.....and so on.
It’s not really that bad, it’s a grower for sure
While its not an 'essential' Bowie album you should check out "Outside"
Very interesting narrative driven album, reminds me alot of W.S. Burroughs style storytelling
Yessss
Here's a vote for Outside being essential Bowie...
Outside is essential.
Outside should be essential. As a sorta iconic well known album it’s not, but for understanding him and looking into his more creative and experimental output you need to hear it
Panic in Detroit, man that song REALLY doesn't live up to the phenomenal guitar intro.
Fine with you skipping most of the other albums but give Heathen a listen some time, I think it was a great album.
Diamond Dogs was good concept album and if you get chance the best and most interesting tracks for me are Big Brother. Sweet thing and sweet thing reprise, we are the dead and candidate
Big Brother is an anthem
Hi Alex. Just stumbled on your videos tonight as I love all things Bowie. I've watched the Lodger, Hunky Dory and Aladdin Sane ones now and I'm loving the format.
Its fascinating, to me, hearing someone discover it all for the first time and have a quite different take that I did.
I think our music favorite music tastes might be quite different but I'm keen to see more of what you really enjoy.
I'm 42 and first heard Bowie in 1989 when someone gave me a copy of the ChangesOne greatest hits.
Question for you...are you looking at the lyrics when listening?
Part of what I love about Bowie (but its something which took me a good bit of time to discover / appreciate) are the references in the songs. I think you'll come back to a lot of stuff after a while and the amount of depth to the lyrics can take you down massive rabbit holes.
If you like, I'll bore you with the story behind Watch That Man! 😀
Hopefully you’ll get round to doing Outside, one of my favorite Bowie albums.... it’s very dark, and not in my opinion one of the most commercial records put out by Bowie, but it’s a compelling listen.
And the Jean Genie was a reference to the writer Jean Jenet
You actually liked a song! Color me pleasantly surprised! As such, I won't comment on the thumbnail photo's disapproving look.
Love this album....I think it is very diverse. Don' t overlook Diamond Dogs...it is excellent..... If you choose a live album by Bowie, David Live is the clear choice.
About Pinups, it actually got decent reviews, but it's all covers of all 60's Britpop. The album is worth owning for his excellent cover of Pink Floyd's "See Emily Play" which is at least as good as the original.
Hey Alex, Please let us know if any of these albums or any particular song grows on you. Sometimes a first listen is not enough for a tune to click on you. I loved it when you came back on your first impressions on The Queen is Dead.... Ah, and please can't help to keep beating the hammer with Tinderstick's first album, a dark beautiful gem waiting to be discovered by you!
I'll probably make a follow-up video once I've done all the Bowie albums in the list and the dust has settled.
"I'm adding Lodger" oh boy. Graceland's schizophrenic cousin.
Well now you’ve got me all hot and bothered.
will you ever find your Bowie Grail ? I'm excited. 6 albums to go...
I've got high hopes for the next 4! Station to Station, Low, Heroes, and Lodger.
At this point in David's career when he released this album he had become a star (thanks to the success of Ziggy Stardust). The overall sound reflects this as the production is bigger. I think David once described it as the American version of Ziggy stardust meaning that it doesn't have the punch of originality as the Ziggy album but works better theatrically (that piano on Time is pure vaudeville).
Please react to Hounds of Love album by Kate Bush !
Oh please don't. You'll probably dismiss every track with your customary superior smugness. In which case I may be forced to kill you.
For "some point in the future" I would say you really need to listen to diamond dogs, 1. Outside, earthling, heathen, reality and the next day
Since you’ve reacted to Pulp and the Stone Roses, maybe you’d be interested in reacting to the La’s self titled album, criminally underrated and pivotal for the rise of britpop
PLEASE, DO HEATHEN FROM BOWIE.
1914-1938-197? Was supposed to be a reference to a Third World War. An ominous touch of extra drama
Very important fly-on-the-wall documentary on the transition between Ziggy and Aladdin here: ruclips.net/video/kZEGHK_3W2o/видео.html
Pin-Ups is very meh, not a huge fan of Diamond Dogs, but Young Americans is a gem... come back to that one.
Please give OUTSIDE and Station to Station a listen
Greetings, I'm from Russia and watch your channel. I came across a video from Joy Division and really want to hear your opinion about the Russian band Chimera, the Zudva album. This is the most depressing shit that exists in the Russian underground, the lead singer Eduard Starkov also hanged himself. The music is dominated by an interesting mixture of overloaded guitars, cellos and trumpets, and all this is damn depressing. If you are reading this comment let me know. Thank you. You can find this album on Deezer. Title - Химера - Zudwa
i listened to that album really liked it is there anything else like it from russia you would recomend
@@ryanauton7026 Let's talk elsewhere, telegram, Instagram or other social networks. I listen to such music and really want to make friends with a person from another continent.
I can recommend a lot of similar albums, but half of them are not on Deezer / com
Skipping 'Young Americans' and 'Diamond Dogs'. WHAT!! Landmark Albums!🤯😱😰
I came back around to them! Check in the pinned comment.
Interesting take on it because my least favorite song is watch that man not to say it was bad but it was not as strong as the others to me would say my favorite is the title track itself also really loved panic in Detroit and cracked actor. Nice review overall though.
React to the last splash by the breeders!
The critics hated this album at first and they didn't like Bowie in general at the time. After Ziggy Stardust, Hunky Dory and the Man Who Sold the World, he got stoned, dramatic, pretentious, and difficult. I was a fan, but it took me years to approach this album because of the terrible reviews it got. I eventually loved it and maybe, more accurately, got used to it. At least the cover is one of the most iconic pieces of art in rock history. The production, though, sounds muddy and murky, unlike his earlier stuff.
Can you react to Mariya Takeuchi - Impressions album
DO YOU KNOW FRANK AND THE WALTERS?
This album marked the end of the Ziggy character and the transition to Bowie as standalone artist. You probably noticed that the Spiders are much less prominent, and there is more of a consistent theme. Bowie had already been handing off the "glam" songs off to others, as that wasn't the direction he was going. I agree that the lad insane is about Terry: this is around the time that Bowie tried to spring him from the asylum and care for him - though one could hardly imagine a more incapable pair to offer help than David and Angela during this period. "Pin Ups" showed some background to Bowie's influences, though it was mainly something to market to a few fans following the final tour with the Spiders. "Diamond Dogs" was the dark crash into the pit from which everything later would evolve. Though it was his only commercial "hit," glad you're skipping "Young Americans"!
Thanks for the history!
I was most disappointed to find out you like Neutral Milk Hotel. They have to be one of THE worst bands ever. So not a surprise you don’t get this. But I appreciate that you are taking the time to listen to his catalog.
Lol
Seems to me you could do with sticking your fingers into a plug socket, to get a boost - hey man, your energy is really low...
This bloke hasn't got a clue what he is on about
why skip and fast forward through the song???? SO annoying. Pass. ☹
Utterly ridiculous video. The way you cut the music. An insult
