We Are The Dead, 1984, and Big Brother were all actually leftover songs from a 1984 musical adaptation Bowie was writing, but got shut down by George Orwell's widow.
This was one of my first Bowie albums and I still consider it a top 10 album from him for sure. I like the concept a lot and it seems a bit underrated nowadays, interesting that the George Orwell estate wouldn't let him do an entire album based on 1984 so he had to make up a story for side 1 and he could do the Orwellian songs on side 2 (Big Brother, Skeletal Family)
It is definitely up there with my favorite albums of all time, though I can't help but think how greater it could have been if Ronson and Woodmansey were still on the band.
I love your summation of his 3-part deep dive into the joins and pains of male prostitution, (Sweet Thing, candidate and reprise), "I don't know if I'd return to it, but it seems nice."
@@mosquerajoseph7305 No they aren't. CRITICS, of the time, only said THAT because THEY were BIASED for the Mod and hippy era's and prejudiced toward the Glam era.
Tbh Alex quite glad to see the back of the Sonic Youth series ( no slight on you, you did a stellar job as always),,they were just a band i gave too much credit back in my university days when they were one of the hip things in the early mid to late 80s alternative rock scene. i realise going through this last recap with you , i'm not really the fan i thought i was and my final takeaway from them is : influential to some degree sure, but more often than not for me , not a great listening experience. Preferred Replacements, Husker Du, Meat Puppets , IRS era R.E.M from that scene … anyway, glad you're sort of tidying up some Bowie loose ends so to speak. Diamond Dogs is far from a favourite of his for me, but Sweet Thing is pretty amazing, and Rebel, Rebel is a very good impression of the Rolling Stones from him at the time..keep up the great work
Also glad to see the back of SY. I'm not huge into no-wave, and I don't love all noise music. It was a cool run but I'm always glad to move onto new things.

@Penderyn Having a great concept is a good thing, but not really that much if you lack the vision and talent to realise It, which is not to say Bowie is talentless. I enjoy some of his stuff. As for this album in particular I only really like the 'rebel rebel" track, but hey that's just my personal taste( or the lack thereof).

Fun fact: Bowie himself played all the guitars on this album.
Not all - Alan Parker played on 1984 & Rebel Rebel.
The first few minutes of Sweet Thing is Bowie's most stunning vocal.
Sweet Thing (Reprise) has some phenomenal vocal moments on it too
Bowie is the GOAT as far as solo acts go.
I remember watching your Aladdin Sane reaction when it came out, never knew Mike Garson commented. Thats pretty damn amazing.

my favorite Bowie album.
WTF!! We are the Dead ain't nuthin like "soul"!! THAT one is more like a creepy GOTH song!
It is definitely up there with my favorite albums of all time, though I can't help but think how greater it could have been if Ronson and Woodmansey were still on the band.
Sweet thing has some of the best Bowie vocals ever
One of my favorite Bowie albums.
Big Brother is my favorite track. Enter sax man, David Sanborn on Young Americans. John Lennon co-writes the song Fame with Bowie
great album, needs several listens to fully appreciate
So, just WHY was Pin Ups skipped, or deemed "not worthwhile"?

Pinups is definitely worth a listen
It’s alright but the songs he’s covering are mostly better than his versions.

My fav disco by Bowie
Then he becomes the Thin White Duke. Saw him both ways. He's a chameleon. A genius. I miss him. RIP DAVID 😪🙏✌🌻🌻
We'll make diamonds from their ashes. Take them into battle with us.

schizogenic, separate rooms attempting a larger tableaux and getting cut off at the pass...

Whats with you? Lately you seem to be reviewing only bands/artists I don't care much about. Oh, well.🤷♂🥂
I read your mind and did it on purpose.
