    Worst engine to run, best type of engine to use for kitbashes, parts, and customs!

    That is horrible! I wanted to share with you and your subscribers how outrageously blessed I was Sunday. I went to an estate auction that had a 24 foot table of all HO train stuff. Only 2 other guys were taking 1st 2nd choice items then I would take the rest so cheap. My back seat and bed of a full size truck was full for only $200.

    In all fairness, to give this a "realism" test kinda misses the point of it being strictly a toy train. Yeah, it's not the most pleasing design, but it served its purpose for the low end line at the time.

  • @absolutelyrandomful
    @absolutelyrandomful 10 месяцев назад +5

    There's a lot of lionel O27 stuff that has charm to it, despite being unrealistic. This is not one of those trains.
    There are even cheaper versions of stuff like this with no headlight, but they don't have the ugly green coal.

    I had one of those. Micro racers set I believe. It wasn't scale, but I loved it. I only have a few cars and one switch so not many problems. I would not buy it now, but it was cool then 😊

    Nicely done video but I think the assessment is a bit harsh. I do agree they should have painted the coal load but reality is that this is intended as an entry level toy in an entry level O27 starter set. In that role it looks fine and has an appropriate amount of detail. 8 cars is unrealistic. These sets usually come with 3 or 4 cars tops.

    • @WashingtonDistrictRailfan
      @WashingtonDistrictRailfan  10 месяцев назад

      Unfortunately, even as a starter set engine, I don't think this engine does the job. Lots of sharp plastic edges where a child could hurt themselves, newer starter set engines from the last couple decades do the job much better in my opinion - I do agree that I could have cut the pulling test back a little bit, haha ;)
      Thank you for watching!

    To be fair most steam engines from the postwar and mpc eras (this engine being from the latter) didn’t actually resemble any real locomotives, most of them were just freelance designs. Your also judging a toy like it’s a model

    I was given an 80s Lionel O-27 starter set (with many of the parts somewhat in tact) from some friends of mine several years ago with that same engine, but it doesn't have the plug cord and painted all-black with Atlantic Coast Line. Unfortunately, the front dummy coupler cowcatcher fell apart before I glued it back together before it eventually fell off again and went missing when my family and I were moving. It was an ok engine for me, but I just dislike how it can only run on DC current and being lightweight. At least I'm glad it wasn't my first O gauge starter set and that would've killed my intersest in 3 Rail O gauge if it were that set. Small O-27 diesels from RMT would do a lot better because they run on either electrical currents and decent quality compared to this "Lionel Marx-Wannabe Steamer".

    • @Petemonster62
      @Petemonster62 10 месяцев назад +1

      Owen - Lionel made a few different sets with DC motor locomotives in the 1970s and 1980s. They did make a set more recently called the "Heavy Duty Construction Set " with a yellow RS-3 diesel that had a DC motor. Lionel may have made a 4-6-4 steamer and a GP-7 diesel in the 1970s with DC motors. There are 4-wheel switchers and 2-4-0 steamers like the one Cadance showed here with DC motors decorated for various railroads. I think K-Line had a set in the 1990s that consisted of a handcar and trailers that was DC powered. I imagine the Lionel vintage train parts sellers may have parts for these trains. It probably would not work to use an insulated track section to activate signals on a DC powered layout, unless you are using a sensitive DC relay to activate the signals. If you are using uncoupling track and operating track sections, you would probably need to disconnect the uncoupling electromagnet coil and the short operating track section rails from the track and connect them to an AC transformer, like you would use to power other accessories, such as streetlights.

    • @OwenConcorde
      @OwenConcorde 10 месяцев назад

      @@Petemonster62 I didn't know that. Thanks! I wouldn't use my said broken 2-4-0 steamer on my O gauge AC layout, not even when I can expand it in the future and it's the only engine I own that's exclusively DC while others are all AC.

    • @Petemonster62
      @Petemonster62 10 месяцев назад

      @@OwenConcorde - I had a Marx 4-wheel diesel switcher that was red & lettered for the Lehigh Valley Railroad. This engine had a DC motor and was originally in a set that was not powered by an AC transformer, but a power pack that housed 4 "D Cell" batteries for a maximum DC output of 6 volts. I got a bridge rectifier from Radio Shack and wired it to the motor. I was then able to run the engine (forward only) with my AC transformer! Benz Trainz did the same with an DC motor Lionel engine, but he also installed a Double-Pole, Double Throw small-size toggle switch on the engine for manual forward/reverse operation - like a Lionel Scout steamer or pre-E-unit pre-war locomotives. There might be a Hobby Town hobby shop in your area that carries Radio Shack parts.

    I remember this locomotive. in 1976 I got the Black River Freight set for Christmas. At that time it was numbered 8602 with Rio Grande markings and a working head light. It also had a oil tender with mechanical chugging sound. A very basic locomotive. Standard AC motor, good enough. The tender on this green unit started in the 70's also. MPC unit 8300 used this slope back tender also. rear light was not functional then also. Why does your Southern #2000 have an electrical connection between the loco and tender if does not sport any other functions like sound?

    The worst model train Lionel had ever made in my opinion was the Lionel 8803. That engine had cheap molded detail, plastic wheels. It has a DC motor and it has 2 wipers on the side near the plastic wheels since the wheels cannot pick up power. The train cars that came in the set were very cheap too. The freight cars had “fake” non swiveling truck that had a single wheel, kind of like later Marx equipment. Once again, super cheap train set.

    Even most of the postwar 200 series steamers only had a drive rod and no side rod. I’m not pleased with the Can motor, many of those were DC only and using AC will fry the motor. It’s light true. Good luck finding a buyer.

  • @rennethjarrett4580

    I think the most embarrassing thing about this one is that; it was sold separately. It is more understandable to have a cost cutting deal in a set to have people get into the hobby with little cost. Added to that fact this was meant as more of a toy then a quality model, why oh why did they not put the reversing unit in the engine like the earlier models or make it forward only. Now you have a set of 4 wires that are not so kid friendly.
    However the middle gear on the side was a thing with almost any Lionel and some other brands for years as well as the motor frame showing. Yes, since the 1970's Lionel those steamer motor frame parts show more then the pre-1970's, on any side gear driven loco.
    What I fine so odd and hardy no one ever brings this up; this top steam engine shell looks so much like the MarX 490 and 400 steam engine top shell. Use a black marker on the coal load and call it done.
    I myself have grown just to fond of the blue steam engine from the 1970's. They work well that have sound of steam and smoke and if you get the set it has many cars. The cars in that set, most have plastic wheels but they work and look fine and colorful, or use them on a 2 rail O gauge train set if I want to.

    I have this thing, I bought a standard gauge bridge off eBay and this was for some reason included, wasn’t complaining, but I got it and it’s awful, the light at the front shining through the plastic is hilarious and mine doesn’t have any weights in it so it takes off like a missle, I legitimately can’t run this thing without it falling off my table, great video!

    I got one of these for my tenth birthday in 1966. Honestly, looking back now, it was a real turd. It lacked any accuracy in it's detail and the mechanism was simply junk. If I recall, this was either when Lionel was owned by General Mills or AMF. Either way, both of these corporate entities in the mid to late 1960s did not know or care about the legacy of Lionel trains so we got a decade of garbage.

    Its pretty bad but Lionel made a lot of crappy low end steamers. The Driving rod only connected to the rear drive wheels goes all the way back to the 1940s and the Scout Locos. I have never liked that feature, either. You don't say whether is AC or DC. Lionel made some DC only ones in the 80s (8008) and those were very bad too. RUnning them on AC will fry the motor. And the 8502 type shows up a lot.Not much in the looks dept.

    I've got one of the original versions of this, a 1061 from the 1950s and it's significantly worse. It's got the old pancake motor drive with no reverser, and makes significantly more noise and barely moves itself. The rods are just stamped pieces of aluminum with zero detail at all. I've pulled my drivers off to somewhat put them closer in quarter with each other, but it's still not completely right.

      Thanks for the compliment! Toy or scale model, this was still a poor effort from Lionel. The sharp edges on the plastic could hurt a child playing with this, and knowing Lionel, they charged far more for this than it is worth. Both Lionel and every other major train brand have made "toy grade" engines far better than this in every way.
