John M. Kelly Lecture 2022 with Lord Jonathan Sumption

In March 2022, UCD Sutherland School of Law was delighted to welcome Lord Jonathan Sumption, retired UK Supreme court judge and renowned historian, to deliver the John M. Kelly Memorial Lecture.
The title of his lecture was: 'The European Union and the Nation-state'.
He was introduced by the Chief Justice, Mr Justice Donal O'Donnell.
UCD Dean of Law, Dr Niamh Howlin hosted the evening and welcomed members of the Kelly Family and the large audience which included many members of the judiciary, legal practitioners, faculty, alumni and students.

Thank you Lord Sumption for a brilliant exposition of the defining political question of our time - can the nation state, which has given us the Western heritage, industrialization and citizens' participation in the political process - can it survive the inexorable force of supra-national imperialism now dominant? I fear the EU is only a detail in the larger picture being painted by Klaus Schwab and his New World Order, to which far too many national politicians, jurists, bureaucrats, NGOs, international organizations and global monopoly corporations already pay more than lip service! They troop to Davos to pay fealty! It appears that only national constitutional courts are holding the line against Luxembourg, but if constitutional judges are political appointees, how much longer will that be the case?
