- I've waited a looong time to make this video. I was waiting for Crostini audio capture to be more accessible. And it finally is, so here we go!

I've been keeping your videos in my "Watch Later" for a while now, and just tried this method. I did have to restart a couple times, and try some different settings, but finally got it all to work.
Your directions are very thorough, and without them, this would've been impossible for me.
Now to get a decent usb mic and get to work again!!

still worked in 2021 thank you, i did not need to adjust the setting in chrome // flags because they were not there lol, just go to linux settings on chromebook and like you said and allow microphone and then put it on default mic:0 in audacity, time to make terrible music.

Hey Thomas , ever used simple screen recorder? Does it work through crostini on chrome book? Loved that program when I was running Linux mint
Unfortunately (I believe this is still the case) no screen recorders work through Crostini, because of the way it runs inside a virtual container. It means Crostini is secure by design, but unable to perform tricks like that I'm afraid. Chrome extensions are currently the best way to go.
@@Thoroughmas when I record with google extensions like screencastify I can never hear the audio. Same with the built in screen recorder

I'm using a Chromebook and just picked up a Behringer UMC22 interface. Initially I was going to try and use Soundtrap, however it doesn't pick up the mic or guitar through the interface and I'm not sure if it's something using Audacity will fix or if I need to do something else to get it to work. Any help would be amazing!

When I did this and tried to close out Linux it said that changes will not be saved if you close. I reluctantly did it anyway and found that Audacity was still installed. Just an FYI :-)

You were very helpfull to me, thank you from france, but, in my chrome flags there is no crostini mic thing to activate, so my microphone still doesn't work (only on audacity )
Idk why my mic doesn't work on audacity it's a really good mic for recording

THANK YOU, THANK YOU VERY MUCH, ive been trying to figure out this problem after i got my sound card, i thought it was the soundcard that was a problem but i guess i need to do all this stuff so thank you very much but i do have a question...
you see, i did follow the instructions until i go to chrome//:flags and searched for "mic" but the options you told me to enable weren't there (my version by the way is 91 official build, 64 bit) so i didnt know what to enable... so i just enabled.. "show plugin Vm microphone permissions" and "Vm camera/mic indicators/notifications" thats what i enabled then i followed the exact instructions afterwards and suprisingly it worked! but is enabling this options alright? does it not effect anything in anyway to my computer?

Thank you, very good tutorial.. question: could you get a mini jack microphone! to work?. I use my recorder as a pre amp device..using the gain of my recorder makes a very good recording indeed ( mic into recorder, recorder headphones jack wire into chromebook.. works on windows)

2:22 I have my Chromebook opened to the site you told me to and I've searched up Mic but none of the two options you've listed are on screen. I have a Chrome OS version 94.04 606 .124 but it's 32 bit. I noticed yours is 64-bit does that make a difference?

Hey William. No need to use the flag for Soundtrap! If you're recording/editing in the Chrome browser, all microphones should already work and be ready to go. Good luck!

Yeah why cant they add audio recording as well while your chromebook screen records
apt-get is a better, more robust option for updates and upgrades, generally speaking. Not to mention, apt-get is less of a resource hog, believe it or not.
And on the top of resources, Crostini continues to barely inch along, only recently reviving broad support for audio, for example, and yet it continues to underutilized resources, RAM in particular. 8GB of RAM is more than enough to run lightweight Linux applications, and yet were you to lookup RAM usage, you'd think you were editing 3D graphics or something absurd like that.
Why is crouton so much better when it comes to handling such basic functionality? Do we refer to this crostini issue as a sort of RAM leakage, or is it something else?
I keep coming back to check it out, and absolutely there have been very exciting and compelling new updates, but all-around, crostini still manages to fall far below what crouton has long since already been capable of, and on lower-end, older hardware too. And yet, I'm noticing more and more crouton breaks, as a direct result of crostini being brought to the chrome os platform.
Thus far, crouton breaks were little to none, and the more recent notable break has a very simple workaround. But as of the last few updates, my Chroot is not behaving as it should, and I suspect it's because, essentially, developing crostini requires blacklisting other methods.
This proprietary nonsense is exactly the reason why I switched to chrome os/linux years ago, but maybe I was just living a pipe-dream. Que sera, sera.
Also, and I apologize if you mentioned this in a separate upload, but I'm curious if that's the dev channel you're on. I found that, while many crostini features are obviously more accessible on the dev channel, it also, unfortunately, makes the ram management issue even worse, not to mention over-heating is significantly more likely to occur, which of course also has an impact on performance.
Is dev channel better for making crostini actually work, as opposed to say beta channel, as it currently stands?

Unfortunately not really. You could maybe get it working with Crossover for Chrome OS, but I doubt it would run very well.

Thank you for this awesome, amazing and super easy to understand video! I've got Audacity on my Chromebook now (thanks again!) I DO have a question though - SUPER NEWBIE - trying to get myself set to start up a podcast - plugged in my USB mic and can record with it, but to playback I have to unplug it from the USB to hear my recording. I had bluetooth headphones on and that that was the problem, but turned off Bluetooth and same deal. Have to unplug the mic from my USB before I can hear my playback. Is this normal? Thanks so much!

Regarding your issue, maybe double check what your audio output it sent to. Click on the clock down bottom right, then click on the arrow next to the volume slider, and you'll be able to set your audio output device there.
It might think your USB mic is also an audio output device.
