Never take anything for granted. For those who think they're "above" all this, a sudden medical emergency, corporate downsizing, toxic domestic situation, whatever, you could end up here in the blink of an eye. My life may not be the greatest, but I still have a roof, a bed, and food. Every day, 24/7, I thank whoever is listening. Not all homeless are the same, of course, but for these types of folks, you have my respect.
Awesome point Sir Charles. Before the pandemic, there were persons who looked down on others such as the homeless, janitors, and people with low paying jobs, then Covid hit and many who felt that they lived on Get-It-Made Boulevard and Easy Street, found themselves, standing in the same soupline line as the homeless and some low-income people, and all their fake designer clothes could not help them pay their bills. Covid gave many a dose of reality and humility.
John Oliver would totally be high fiving you right now. He just took down all middle-class/upper-class HOMED persons with roof over there heads who complain about the homeless and went on to butcher all of their arguments on his show. That was aired last night on HBO (sunday, I'm speaking of)

If you work 40 hours a week and can't afford to live in an apartment, there's something really wrong. Nobody should be suffering from poverty working full time.
I live in California and basically working a minimum wage job means your going to be homeless or have 5 roommates. only college students while living at home take those jobs. But even students prefer campus student jobs because they usually pay 3-5 dollars more than minimum wage and come with perks like free food and csu logo clothes
Can't afford or are choosing not to? There are options. They could get an apartment. Especially if they are working that much. When you put yourself into a situation like this you should be asking yourself some major questions. What got me here? What should I do? Where do I go from here? How do I advance from this position? Not just sit down in one spot and act like woe is me. These people all have jobs and vehicles I do not feel pity for them in the least. They are all fully capable human beings cry me a river.

May I ask if you care to know the fact that the Second Amendment in the USA was historically put in place in the American Constitution, mainly to encourage slaughtering indigenous Native American people, in order to take over their homeland. Moreover, the hidden mega genocide of indigenous Native Americans, and their population in Continents of America 500 yrs ago was around 15 millions, while European population in Europe was around 25 millions. Today, Native Americans population is 15 million, while the European population, in the Continents of America + Europe, is a staggering 'TWO BILLIONS'! For instance, 200 years ago here in the USA, around 3 million Germans came, and now there are 65 millions German-Americans; while 150 years ago, around 2 millions Irish came, and now there are 45 million Irish-Americans. While 500 years ago there were estimated to be 5 to 6 millions indigenous Native Americans in the USA, before Christopher Columbus arrived, today there are only around 2 million indigenous Native Americans survived. Imagine this scenario, if Native American people cross the Atlantic, invade and Colonize Europe, and slaughter most Europeans, and put the remaining populations in tiny reservations, for 500 long years. How would Europeans feel about it? Think about it. All they need is their beloved motherland back, the lands that their ancestors' forebears had lived through thick and thin, endured through hardships and all for generations. Besides, indigenous Native Americans in Colonized lands of Anglo British, Spaniard and others are more of the same. Kill the indigenous Natives and whoever is left, marginalize them and create artificial poverty, once that poverty becomes crime and drinking, the media points to the poor and blames them to continue to stigmatize the 'other' community, scumbags, etc. Amazing fact that Indigenous Natives had built such great civilizations as Mayan, Inca and Aztec without outside help, and all from scratch, and all on their own, since they had been cut off from the rest of the world for twenty thousand years. In other words, they actually are great and proud people. Imagine what it would be like today if Native Americans had possessed some sort of nuclear weapons to defend themselves, and their beloved motherlands from invaders Colonizers? The answer is they would still have their own beloved motherlands, plus their population comparable to that of the European population. In my humble opinion, it's about time to decolonize the Colonized lands, and return it to rightful owners Native American people. Remember, notorious global cardinal crimes the West has committed, and benefited a great deals, such as Slavery & Colonialism had long been over, why on earth is this another notorious Colonization still lingering on, may I ask? 🤔
Maria seems like she has a relatively positive attitude and she is making the most of a very difficult situation. Wishing all of these people a quality of life that is deserved
If you live in your car, you may as well work 7 days a week. Maria has an accent, and it does not sound like a hispanic accent, sounds more European. Where is she from? I have lived and travelled extensively throughout Europe and most countries have housing as well as financial benefits (welfare). If she is from a country in the EU then she has the ability to live in several countries, all which will help with housing. Also, Why did she leave everything to her ex husband? I do not know if it ever says where she is from but I am guessing it is a country in Europe, a country that would house her. Live in your van? or swallow your pride and go back to your country....I would go back. I have cancer, not only is my treatment free but I am receiving housing help as well as bi-weekly cash payments. I have paid tax for this...

My lease is up soon, so I've been looking at apartments. The same apartments I looked at last year have risen $200+ a month while wages remain the same. It doesn't help that many places did NOT have a rent freeze during the pandemic, so many people still had to struggle to pay bills while unemployed or while worried their job could be shut down at any moment. I see all these people with the latest IPhone talking about how "poor" they are, and it really highlights how huge the income gap is in America. People who are well-off think they're broke just because they aren't millionaires even though they're able to not work for an entire year with their only worry being a haircut. This is the America no one talks about. This is the America the rest of the world doesn't know exists...
The ‘pizza man’ said that he received 6 months of unemployment payments, “& then nothing at all”. Does the USA really only pay benefits for 6 months? How are people supposed to live if they can’t find a job in 6 months? Do they really depend on charity or crime just to eat? 😳 In Britain there are people who live their whole lives on welfare…
@@sophiefilo16 Oh my goodness, that must be so stressful for you! 😔 I’m so sorry!! In the USA can your landlord just evict you, even if you have nowhere to live? Are there homes which belong to the state that you can rent for reduced rates, if you’re in need? I hope that things workout for you! 🙂
@@suzimonkey345 There are people who live on welfare their entire lives here, too. But those are people who have disabilities that greatly reduce their ability to work. If you are seen as someone who is "able" to work full time, you may not be eligible for unemployment at all. Even during COVID, if you quit your job out of fear of getting sick, that does not make you eligible for unemployment. You have to have been working at a place that was shutdown or that let you go in order to decrease labor hours. 6 months is a blessing a lot of people would wish for...
@@suzimonkey345 I wrote a detailed answer to your comment, but I don't think RUclips saved it. The gist was, landlords have the right to evict you if you are late on paying rent, even if it's just by a few days. They can change the locks while you're gone and call the cops if you try to step back onto the property. Yes, there are government housing programs, but those have extensive waitlists. Some people wait years just to get denied because the qualification requirements changed during the time they were waiting. Those programs prioritize single mothers and people with severe disabilities. Someone like me who lives alone and does not have any (documented) disabilities would be on that waitlist until the day I die...
I share your opinion Sometimes I said to myself it is so unfortunate Straight or run off couldn't be living in that country and don't live anywhere Sorry if I'm getting the wrong impression
Loved this documentary right up until the end. That whole experiment to pay to be homeless is disgustingly insulting. They are uncomfortable one night and suddenly have a taste of what it’s like? OUTRAGEOUS. Should have left that part out completely.
Well, it was a bridge of some sort. It was an experience for those people. And the money is probably used for something to help...It was a bit "Bumps-A-Daisy" on the veranda but it was something ; ) K
Maria is a proud and hard working woman. If she lived in my country ( Scotland ) I would welcome her into my home. I have a physical disability and because I'm in pain a lot I often don't stop to feel grateful for my home, family and lovely dog. It hurts my heart to see people existing like this. It's only going to get worse in the UK too with our fuel and utilities having gone up astronomically over the last year.
They are also part of the SAME mentality, when it comes to voting, view of policies, against taxes and so on, that CREATED the problem in the first place. To use an analogy, a freezing vampire is still a vampire. The point being that what you invite to your nation might not be what you think you are going to get unless you aim to integrate them properly AND set standards for what is acceptable. People taking a "US mentality" to Scotland wont help or aid Scotland. Or to put it another way. When the oil story of Norway started we started with US mid level bosses in the North Sea because they had experience and such with drilling oil and they viewed Norwegian as "white nig-gers" until major strikes kicked those US tools out with their "corporate always" mentality.
@Polish Gay thank you for sharing truths! Americans get beat over the head how wonderful socialist Canada is with their “free healthcare” programs! Of course those who die waiting a year or longer for treatment is never mentioned by “progressives”. The hard truths are there is no free lunch! Tax one group to pay for another in the resource shuffle game! If you have no minor child(ren) in America you receive very little to get back on your feet when down. Maria is lucky to have a manual labor job without former education and perhaps no U.S. citizenship! Innocent children like Cassidy & her sister are being used as meal ticket pawns! Their mother no doubt receives WIC, food stamps, MediCal insurance and other financial benefits for two minor children. Available affordable housing is the long pole in their tent. I can’t help but think those innocent children would be much better off in a stable, state run orphanage instead of being dragged around by their unemployed mother. Their father killed a man in Kentucky with an axe. So the likelihood of him being any help financially is very low unless he gets released from prison!
We don't have money to help people paying for a nice little house but we have money to help big companies so they can keep making mistakes and paying low wages.
With the thousands coming in illegally at the border encouraged by this senile old puppet and his feeble administration, You need to update your political commentary on the great harm that is being done to the USA citizens that are homeless and living in Poverty.A disgrace.
@Biba Ibrahim,There is no hatred of immigrants on my part but the understanding that a country without borders is no country at all which is persistently the goal of the ones at the top of the food chain looking to achieve their end goal-one world government. It is not behind anyone's backs who have eyes to see.The USA has laws concerning LEGAL immigration into the country.
not to mention engineering the climate crisis unabated. the US govt is criminal for the lengths it has gone to to protect global capitalist hegemony (among other things)
@@teribendt94 the legal immigration route essentially functions as a filter to make sure those coming in will be complicit with the status quo. the process is needlessly complex and expensive ensuring only a certain type of folk with the capacity and resources to navigate that process get in. open borders should be the goal of those interested in truly intersectional justice not a fear re: a one world govt.
It's not that simple. Americans wanted cheap goods, so jobs were outsourced. The US continues to buy cheap goods that are made outside of the US. The executives make too much, that I will not argue, but we're going to have to start building what we need instead of buying it from cheap labor markets in other countries. It's going to cost more to buy that stuff, but we're going to have to suck it up and deal with. You can't pay decent wages when there's a lack of jobs. We need to develop recycling methods and recycle what we use. We need to stop buying stuff we don't need. It's going to be painful but it can be done.
I’ve noticed in America & other countries, the poorest are the most generous. They are aware things are not what is really important- that the people are.

The reason for that-they risk their lives to enter without invitation. In US people shoot for a lesser reason and often with no reason at all. Too many guns in the hands of unstable people and criminals.
In the USA most people are addicted to drugs and or have vices that are ruining their lives alcohol, tobacco all those small purchases add up to wasted money that should and could be used for rent.
@@danny208YT Please show us were is the statistic that says that most people in the US are addicted to drugs? The reality is that living in the cities is expensive specially if you want to live in a decent neighborhood. Many urban areas in the city are very dangerous but the rents are affordable. The main problem with the US is the breakdown of the family. As soon as a child reach adulthood he is required to get a place, while paying student loans. The majority of the young people who live at home, with their parents, while working and saving do ok.
I'm from the Netherlands and I'm SHOCKED. This is totally unheard of and absolutely impossible over here. The haves in the USA should pay a lot more taxes to help the not-haves.

I can identify with Maria's plight. I once lived partially in Planet Fitness, especially since some of them are open 24/7. Housing, medical and dental are the three most challenging aspects of life. After retiring I decided to become an Expat, by moving to a Caribbean country where I was still safe, and the country's cost-of-living was cheap, clean, safe, low rent, and utilities are very reliable. By moving to another country, my social security went up by 170%, because the exchange rate is one US dollar to two dollars and seventy cents, so I am able to live a high-quality life at an On-The-Cheap Price. Thank God for having the ability to make the change. I feel so sorry for those who have to stay a deal with it.

I think it happens because management is getting younger. Back in the 1980’s a senior manager might be in his late 40’s. Today that person could be 30 or less. They aren’t old enough to empathize with age and value experience. When I looked for jobs in my 50’s I often get impression they were uncomfortable just interviewing somebody old enough to be their father.
@wildheart believe me. I make good money now and I save/invest almost all of it except what I need for food and utilities. Since I work from home, I can keep this up until I’m 70. The great thing about working from home is no one can see you and be uncomfortable about your age.
I lived on the streets for 3yrs and I spent 2 new England winters on the streets sleeping in a small tent. It was horrible but I can honestly say I met some of the most amazing, talented and kindest people I've ever met on the streets. It's sad some of them have drug problems or mental health problems. I have a roof over my head now but I'm always prepared to loose it again. Sounds crazy but if you have been through it you always think about how easily it could happen again. Most people don't understand how easily it could be them
@@torehaaland6921 it's not good for people who have disabilities but it also depends upon the state you are in they are all different. It's like anything else it has it's ups and downs but you can blame our government for most of them
The lady who said “it doesn’t smell like poop and urine and there aren’t rats everywhere” is clearly stuck in a lot of stereotyped thinking. Homelessness doesn’t always look or smell that way. You’d be rlly surprised and how many people are homeless and never fit those stereotypes.
She might be laughing when she said she will kill herself if she goes completely homeless to mask her fear and vulnerability. But we know it could happen if she really gets into that situation facing her worst nightmare, being homeless and hopeless. I have been in her situation, it is not nice to live in constant anxiety that you could lose everything in a single minute and not have a safety net to rely on, it kills you slowly. I'm lucky I met someone who helped me through a hard time and I hope Maria also will get help somewhere where she could set her life again. We all need help from each other, none can do everything completely by oneself.
I just spent the last year and a half being in charge of evictions for a property management company. From filing the paperwork to going with the sheriff to put people out. I couldn't do it anymore. I left the job. I just got a job in a gas station. I don't know if I'll be able to keep my apartment. The system is so broken.
It amazes me how our President can send billions and billions to other countries, keep our borders wide open and some American people are living in poverty. Thank God, for people with good hearts willing to help others.
I wish I could afford to donate tiny homes for people. I would. I struggle myself. But if I were one of those rich and famous I'd be doing a hell of a lot more than buying shoes and handbags and billion and million dollar homes!!!!
Isn’t that how it always seems to go? The people who WOULD do the most to help don’t have the resources and those who have the resources and COULD help, don’t. They justify their inaction by piling on the “qualifications” which allow them to a) judge who is deserving of help and who is not; and b) allows them to limit their actual investments to the tax-deductible sort (which effectively reallocates their “donations” to taxpayer pockets. And nobody seems at all bothered by the fact that we’ve been shifting the onus for care of the less fortunate to charities (limited by tax write-off donations) and religious organizations whose membership is declining, instead of just keeping them in the hands of the government. The problem never was that government was too big to administer social programs (a corporation of the same size would have required more than 30% more employees/management), but the requirements added to qualify for help and the massive resources to “prove” qualification. It should be enough to just say you’re hungry, can’t afford housing, NEED medical care, or are just at the end of your rope. We could manage this problem EASILY. Let me be President for a year. I’d turn this country around on a dime. If we keep paying Bezos and Zuckerberg and Musk for the privilege of associating with them while allowing them to strip ever more resources from the country that literally MADE them, it won’t be long before America begins to look like 18th century France.
The free dental clinic shown in Appalachia looked amazing! It truly warmed my heart to see people giving their time and abilities to help those truly in need. ❤❤❤
Holy crap, that dental clinic is AMAZING!! Even when I had "good" insurance, they only covered minimal dental. With Medicaid you only get a yearly cleaning (basic, no fancy periodontal deep cleans) and about $250 per year for any fillings, caps, extractions, dentures, etc. you might need. This is almost enough to cover ONE extraction at a dental school. It's insane.
Yes it truly was. I love seeing people do kind things for others. But I didn't like that guy putting his finger in her mouth with no gloves on for the photo tho.
It can happen to ANYONE at anytime. That's why we should never judge the homeless. Unless you've walked a mile in their shoes you're not going to know each of their stories and lives. We also throw away so much perfectly good food from stores, uneaten hot foods and deli food and that should go to the needy. I just saw my old ordinary apartment I lived in at one time in California and the rent is now 3500 a month for a thousand square feet.
The perseverance, the resilience, and the faith that's keeping the homeless carry on life is beyond the almost insurmountable difficulties they have to face everyday and I can narrowly imagine what they have to endure in a single day. My soul is so torn to say the least.
This should also serve as a warning, to those who aren't homeless, to live below your means because you never know what life will bring around the next corner, and having money saved will be very important.
When wages are low and COL is increasing, it gets harder to save. Most people cannot put away enough money to save enough to cover all expenses for an extended period of time.
Right on, Free Pizza Guy. I remember long ago, way back in the Before Times, I was in a coffee shop downtown and it was nearly closing, and I noticed they had a lot of sandwiches for sale for $1 each to clear them out, and I said I'll buy 'em all to give to homeless people, and the guy *gave* them to me, and I gave them out to people at this one intersection downtown that was a helpful thing I could do, but the very next time I was down there, they'd boarded up the fronts of the buildings there so the homeless people there didn't have shelter any more from the rain or the wind. No good deed goes unpunished in the US.
I live in a Capitol City of a state, 2 blocks from the Capitol building even and here our mayor erected wrought iron fences in front of vacant buildings so the homeless can't get out of the rain or sun. America is NO place to feel pride because we as people are only as good as the care we provide the least of us.
I used to work in a kitchen at a university, and every night, we threw away multiple garbage cans' (think those big garbage cans people use for yard work) worth of food. One woman tried to collect the food to give out to homeless people, but the manager stopped her. He said it was fine for her to take whatever for HERSELF, but she can't give to anyone else because it was a liability issue. Basically, they didn't want to risk someone getting sick from the food and potentially trying to sue, so they would rather throw it all away instead. This country has so much waste that could be put to good use, but everyone is just concerned with profit...

I don’t understand people like that woman who called the cops about the small home. So many people complain about the homeless population in their areas, but when someone or the government decides to put in low income housing or shelters they become outraged because they are absolutely convinced that all it will do is bring more homeless to the area and lead to those that are being housed destroying the neighborhood with drugs, trash, bodily waste, etc. which is ridiculous. When someone becomes housed they are infinitely more likely to find a job (because it’s next to impossible to get one if you don’t have an address and the ability to shower and have good hygiene) and the neighborhood became safer and so much cleaner. When you’re on the street you usually have no other choice than to discard your trash on the street as well as use the bathroom in public. This is absolutely heartbreaking and disgusting that the "Greatest Country" in the world treats its citizens this way. No one should have to live like this. I'm in Canada so I know it's not that much better here , but at least we have free healthcare. My husband was unexpectedly rushed to the hospital in late March of this year. About 10 days later he had surgery to remove a massive tumour from his colon and had to have part of his left kidney removed as well. He ended up with an ileostomy for six months and had the reversal surgery at the end of August. In total he had three operations and stayed 22 days in the hospital. We don't even know how much all of it cost because we weren't billed. I'm guessing it would have been well over $150,000 if we were in the US. He's a small business owner and that's our only source of income. If it weren't for GoFundMe and free healthcare we would be homeless. My heart goes out to these families! We're still struggling a bit but watching this makes me feel incredibly fortunate that we got through and didn't lose our home.

The wars are highly profitable. It’s the reason they keep inventing reasons to invade other countries with oil and resources they want or need. Make no mistake, they make money off those wars.
Hard work is NOT all it takes. There will ALWAYS be a permanently poor class of people-when one person leaves another enters destitute. It’s how the society is built and can be traced right back to Europe’s slums (let’s be real and honest, despite some flaws, none of the colonized places had permanently hungry people running around before). This is western “civilization” and it runs off using people up like this. It’s sad, but until we stop thinking of poverty as a flawed personality trait and start thinking of it as a permanent part of the system that always needs addressing, nothing will change for millions.

Living in England it’s easy to forget how fortunate we are to have free (at the point of service) healthcare!! When I lived & worked in the USA I was truly horrified by the cost of medical attention & prescriptions WITH good insurance!! 😳 In England all of our children’s prescriptions are free (regardless of income). Working adults pay approximately £10 for a monthly prescription. I need several medications so I pay £100 a year which covers limitless prescriptions (regardless of income). The most shocking thing is the cost of medical procedures. In Britain a private clinic (cash payment. NO insurance etc) charges less than £150 for a spine MRI. In the USA, with insurance, I payed many, MANY times that amount, out of pocket, for the exact same MRI!! I opted to wait for a ‘free’ appointment on the National Health Service. I waited less than a week because my GP doctor said that I “needed” it… I don’t know anyone who has ever waited a long time on “waiting lists”, for any healthcare.
And over 60% of the homeless are Ex-Military !!! Our county has a veterans commission but by law, we can only advise the county government what to do !!! The one good thing is Homeless Veterans can get medical help from VA Hospitals something non-veterans can not get.
Not true.20% Having been homeless and now volunteering for the homeless .However 80% of the homeless are male. 50% are ex-cons who can't get a job or are wanted.
The mass medical treatment scene starting at 30:00, is simply crazy. How do you people live like that in the US and accept that it is the ok standard expected instead of the universal social security and medical care other nations are able to provide for all their citizens? It's just mind blowing how poor your country is.
We had a president who tried to move us to more universal health care system. They accused him being a Muslim socialist who wanted to take away your freedom of choice. What choice? The average American absolutely cannot afford medical care here. A week’s stay in a hospital could $60,000 and up. They only possible way that will be covered is through insurance that is offered by your employer …. Maybe your employer … and that’s assuming you have an employer. It’s insane but we were born and raised in this system. We don’t know any better.
Most western "other countries" are still economically robbing second and third world countries and punish them brutally when they refuse to give the resources and money, like what you see the western world is doing to Russia now.

Yes, there are government housing programs, but those have extensive waitlists. It's not that simple. Americans wanted cheap goods, so jobs were outsourced. The US continues to buy cheap goods that are made outside of the US. The executives make too much, that I will not argue, but we're going to have to start building what we need instead of buying it from cheap labor markets in other countries. Totally agree.
Let's do it. I'm a builder.

When someone becomes housed they are infinitely more likely to find a job (because it’s next to impossible to get one if you don’t have an address and the ability to shower and have good hygiene) and the neighborhood became safer and so much cleaner.
