Golden Sun REVIEW: A TIMELESS RPG Classic ~ Is It WORTH PLAYING in 2024?

In 2023, one of my main ‘’gaming objectives’’ for the year is to complete a few old-school JRPGs that are on my backlog. On top of my list was a GBA classic: Golden Sun. Golden Sun is a big surprise to me as I adore this jrpg as a newcomer to this series. Here are my thoughts and in-depth review in 2023 for Golden Sun, from a newcomers perspective.

this game has a map built in press l and r at the same time
You probably have been told by now, but I recall even this first Golden Sun game having a full map of the world IN GAME. I think if you pressed one of the shoulder buttons you'd have the camera pan out just a little bit, but if you pressed the other shoulder button you could see the whole map and even use a cursor to highlight the different towns and whatnot.
I'm so nostalgic about these games. They were so cozy and beautiful. It may seem ridiculous nowadays to talk about them as such an achievement when they fit Breath of the Wild and Tears of the Kingdom in an arguably smaller Switch cart, but it was amazing how much of an odyssey Golden Sun and The Lost Age felt like when they were packed in those tiny GBA cartridges.
I’ve noticed the series has been getting a lot of attention lately, keep it up guys that’s a good sign 👍
This game blew my 10 year old mind back in the day and was my first JRPG. Just played it again last year and it’s still so good. Going to be playing the lost age again soon.

It was my first JRPG as well! Imagine this: it's your 8th yo birthday and as a gift you receive a Game Boy Advance SP packed with Yoshi's Island and Golden Sun. Best birthday ever!!

I can highly recommend playing Golden Sun Reloaded, way more difficult and therefore only for seasoned players 😉

Golden Sun is one of those games that I come back to and never get bored despite playing and beating the game multiple times. Part of it was nostalgia, but the gameplay was so engaging (puzzles in particular are surprisingly refreshing to me), and the game doesn't overstay its welcome. I do wish for some sort of remake of the game, but considering it hasn't got a game since the DS, I won't hold too much hope. The Golden Sun series deserves the love, it's a definitely a cult classic to me.

Have all 3 games but remember playing the first part the most in 8th grade back in 2001. I hooe they re release all three for the switch. Id definitely re buy all three. The graphics were awesome for back in the day

Probably my favorite line of dialogue in the first game is when you're in Kalay talking to Lady Layana during the Hammet sidequest and she asks you if you know a village called Vale. You get a Yes/No option and saying No will make Garet go off spouting nonsense like he can't believe you just said that. It gave me a good laugh.
I noticed you mentioned being disappointed in the lack of a map. If you are in the overworld press R. it will bring up the in game map! Hope you enjoy Cartography!

Things I love about Golden Sun: quick early game pacing gets the player into the combat mechanics and plot rapidly, that aesthetic of 3D models turned into sprites and some mode-7 like 3D really soothes my soul, the soundtrack is really strong, the Djinn system is unique, exploration options open and expand alongside combat options as the player progresses, menu navigations are speedy and streamlined, and the puzzles are fun and well thought out within the in-game logic.
Things I dislike: theres often no direction as to where to go next, most of the djinn are completely missable which can ruin a whole run if you're not strictly following a guide, weapon progression is mostly linear while the djin system is poorly explained, the plot is lukewarm at best and the repetitive dialogue is mind numbing, and the encounter rate is very...let's call it "old school" to be generous.
I enjoy the game, but missed it back in the day and I find it difficult to see the "legendary" qualities people often attribute to it. Other than, of course, the aesthetics and that absolutely timeless Camelot charm.
OMG!!!!! I grew up on these 2 games! Also I think that the second one is the perfect sequel when it comes to gameplay. There is a battle mechanic that I still rarely see in rpgs, and it makes the whole team useful.
Ohhhh that means, I am in for a treat with the sequel eheh!
Golden Sun is a fantastic gateway into 2d JRPGs. It doesn't do anything overly unique, but it takes some of the best elements from classic JRPGs and combines them into a polished little gem of a game.
Golden Sun was one of the first RPG games I played when I was younger that wasn't pokemon. I guess I could say it was at fault for developing my adoration for the Jrpg genre.
This game captivated me back then and it gives me a nostalgia I'll always carry, especially with it's music.

I've just finish the game. Yes it still worth to play, its awesome classic RPG. Psynergy and Djin are unique factors that make this game still different from most RPG.

This was first rpg at the age of 13. Good ol days.
This took me back. I remember playing this title but don't remember anything about it. I might need to replay it.
Definitely a fun time from start to finish!
I-sack lol. Its Eye-zay-ick. But great review bro. For anyone who hasnt gone through it i highly suggest playing on native hardware. Find an AG101 SP or modded GBA.
And i don't know if the port you're playing came without it but on GBA you can press the R button to bring up a world map.

GS definitely is one of the best rpg i played when i was a kid and is amazing i hope someday comback with a new sequel or remakes or remastered we need it ❤❤❤❤
I hope I'm not too late to jump in now but there is an in game way to look at the map. Unfortunately, I don't think the game tells you, but in both Golden Sun and also in its sequel, you can open the world map while you're on the overworld by pressing R, and L will zoom out the camera a bit.

the lost age was my favourite game of all time until just recently it was dethroned by xenoblade chronicles 3. it had nearly 2 decades of dominating my list. the fact that its a freaking GBA game still blows my mind. and i will never stop dreaming of golden sun 4.... which will probably never happen.

Golden sun & Golden Sun: the Lost age are the best JRPGs on the GBA.
Dark dawn on the DS fell flat so hard. It was more like a soft reboot with all the retcons,plotholes and half-baked additions it had.

Best jrp ever but the second one is kinda difficult
GS is epic - even more so when you realise that they had to split the game up into 2 parts because of cart sizes e.t.c. I can't imagine playing the whole thing thru on 1 cart!
I don't think this game is slept on at all. Golden Sun and The Lost Age are considered all-time greats.
That said, I think a good number of people my age probably did miss it originally.
The PS2 was out, with FF10, Shadow Hearts, and BG: Dark Alliance launching in 2001; PC was releasing some of the best games of the decade (Diablo 2 especially).
At the time I was in my early 20s, and I wasn't even really considering dropping any of my extremely limited funds on a system "for kids."
I personally didn't play the games until I got a DS some years later, although some of my friends had played it and really loved it.
I think in modern age, people who play it appreciate it quite a bit, but I think it deserves more recognition for how good it is! Thank you for watching :)
There is a map in game. I believe it is the l button to zoom out a bit and another button to pull up the map. Still watching the video but had to say that.
I have no idea how to activate it and can't seem to find info online either... Am I crazy or...?
@@DavidCastJRPGs I just replayed the beginning to get to the overworld. It's pressing the R button. The L button zooms out. R button pulls up a world map. You do have to be on the overworld though.

There is a map you have to push the trigger buttons
I really wanna emulate old games on like a portable device, but: playing on the phone with sensor is a bad experience for me, attaching it to a joystick is kind of awkward, getting a razer kishi costs like getting a used 3ds in my country and in my country they don’t really sell a lot of good portable emulation devices like anbernic. I think I’ll just end up emulating gba on pc eventually 😂 or get a 3Ds(however I believe it might be too late for that😂 considering how old the system is)
One thing's for sure, GBA is easy to emulate! A small handheld like you mention, a NSO subscription, a PC, theres options out there! If you have a Wii U, the game is up for sale on the eshop as well!

Also the “sequel” isn’t really a sequel, it’s just a continuation of the story. They just cut the game into two to make extra money or something. I can’t remember.

I tried playing my original cartridge on a hardware emulator and it died on new game launch.

After a certain point in the game, you do get a world map.
Fyi, you always have a world map. In all three games. However there is only a "world" map, not dungeon or town maps etc. (Golden Sun Dark Dawn does always have a map for all areas, however.)

@@Wil_Dsense you can do it with link cable, if you cant use link cable there is a sequence of buttons to press on the main menu to access a password from your save file, you can find on the wiki, then when you start the second game you can write the password
Golden Sun 1 and 2 were great games, Golden Sun 3 on the NDS wasn't that good anymore

Yeah, that’s why silent protaganist need to just go away. Still loved the duology though! I refuse to acknowledge the ds game, it shows Camelot working on sports games for years stunted their talent.
