    Wow ! Lou, I have never seen one of these. Beautiful car with very sleek styling. ! Love the color combo with the real wooden dash. The workmanship of the interior & exterior is fabulous. I'm surprised there is no armrest on the door panel, though. Kind of strange that a fancy car would not have one. ! Also suprised that it's not right hand drive... also runs very smooth - could barely hear it running. ! Thanks Lou & to Richard, for giving us a look at his Bentley. !

      I’m not sure what year it happened but Rolls Royce and Bentley merged or RR bought Bentley so it may have been built by RR which would explain the resemblance

    • @dmdivers
      @dmdivers 2 года назад

      Yes, the chassis and engine were built by Rolls Royce at the Crewe factory and this particular car the body/interior was built by the coachbuilders Mulliner down in London. These Continental's are essentially a standard Bentley R type with a custom coachbuilt body.

      @@vantagemotorworks5712 I think they were! My late uncle was Col William H Smith he was a well known Auctioneer in Miami (Jim Gall studied under him) and owned Hales Antiques (70s) and had a block long store in N Miami with a vintage 1920's RR Phantom in the showroom window. I think my uncle had about 7 RR's or 8 in total. His ex wife my aunt Treva and her family owned A1 Fargo formerly Mayflower now American Moving on Dixie Hwy in Miami. Family owned for over 70 years. We all grew up in Coral Gables a few doors down from the spanish consulate if its still there??, my family was mostly on Granada Blvd before my mom went to belle meade Island and then to Jupiter. They used to hang out a lot with Bob Butterworth, the late Janet Reno and her girlfriend at the time Ann Bishop(a news anchor) and I remember Spiro Agnew, Dionne Warwick and Danny Thomas used to come over frequently too... some guy named Rick Shaw who was on radio I think lived nearby and came over a lot. this was all in the 70s so a bit vague on what I can remember. If anyone is from Miami in that era will possibly remember those names I guess.

I would have expected to find something bigger than a six under the hood, but it's so quiet it would put the baby to sleep, as you like to say. I'll bet the ride would, too! I remember this model when they were new. Bentley Continental R with coach work by H J Mulliner, introduced at the 1952 London Motor Show it was the world’s most expensive car at that time and also one of the world’s fastest 4 seater road cars. Weighing 3,543 lbs. not exactly a light weight car. Nice to see that Mr Gorman has a detailed documentary restoration of the car. A rare and valuable car today.

Interesting how the english were better than us at certain things like the wood graining and upholstery, yet they fell far short in other areas like the very out dated steering wheel and eye soar of an overly extended exhaust pipe. Sounds like the owners of these cars have a love hate relationship with them buying, selling the buying them again. I can see where the current Bentley Continental draws it's inspiration. This ine being much nicer in my opinion. Especially the dashboard, OMG. But I think I would prefer the Cadillac fastback from the 40s. Those things make me go gah gah everytime I see them. Could see the whole family sleeping in one of them instead of having to rent a hotel room when on a road trip, they're so big. Just shower at the local Y.

    What exactly was Bentley's relationship to Rolls Royce? Is that a deisel engine?

      Hi Robert, I'm not sure what the relationship was or is, so I'm hoping a Viewer can share knowledge. It's a gas engine, Lou

      Rolls Royce bought Bentley in 1931. Cerain Bentley models were sportier than Rolls like this fast back example. I am not aware of any diesel engines on either mark.

      Bentley was the sports model.

      @@camchrisman732 when I lived in Los Angeles in the 70s, I saw Rolls Royce's and Bentley's everywhere. Especially the older larger models from the 50s and 60s. They looked very similar. Using American luxury cars as an example, was the Bentley like driving a Oldsmobile 98 or Buick Electra as opposed to a Cadillac? Or was the Bentley comparable to a Cadillac Calais/ Model 62 and the Rolls Royce comparable to the Sedan de Ville or Fleetwood?

    03:45 "..that beautiful chrome piece..." There is NO chrome on a Bentley. All the brightwork is Polished Stainless Steel.
