THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS!!!! I never ever leave comments on things but oh my goodness you saved us A LOT of sanity by posting this video. We had been scraping and scraping for 12 hours and could not get the grout off. We too let it try a little too long and it was black no less! Who woulda though $8 and your video could make everything better. Seriously THANK YOU!!!
Welcome to my world. LOL😅 I clean new construction. Lately the tile guys are so busy they get lazy. They really don't rinse well. I get there about a month after tile laid. This stuff is fully cured. I get the grout and cement all over the whole house, mainly traffic areas . I laugh when the searches say use vinegar. Nope, doesn't work, 30 may but expensive doing 2000Sq ft of tiles. Phosphoric works well buy you have to scrub rinse repeat again and again. This stuff works really well
Thank you for watching and for the nice comment. I agree completely about the vinegar - maybe a decent all-purpose cleaner, but definitely not strong enough for this stuff. Take care!
Great video, thank you so much! Just a heads up, while we're doing this type of work, we should always tape up the drain to the tub. Grout is basically concrete, which we do not need or want to go down the drain. :)
I did the same mistake , I used a wall paper steamer which easily removes the excess grout from tiles with a scraper and scourer ! Tiles left clean and looking great !
We made the same mistake on (thankfully) floor tile. I used your approach of putting paper towels soaked in a vinegar/water solution on each tile. I cut the paper towels to fit each tile surface, to avoid soaking the colored grout between tiles. Let the paper towels sit for 10 minutes, then used a combination of a non-abrasive scrubbing pad and a plastic scraper - a credit card, for instance - to help move stubborn blobs. As I removed wet towels, I put them on the next tile to be scraped, and spritzed with my vinegar solution. Warm-to-hot water helps. Yes, it’s a lot of work and my hand is worn out, but it worked without having to lose more time & money trying products that disappoint!
I used a similar product today and it worked like a dream. You still have to scrub the old excess grout but it is a night and day difference with scrubbing without it. The grout in between the tile wasn't affected but you absolutely have to neutralize it with water or it will affect it. Once it dries, it's like the problem was never there. Before this, we used steel wool, a nylon pad for a 4.5" grinder, and scrappers and all of them worked but really hard and lots of time. This cut the time by 75% so what took 4 hours would take an hour. Hope this helps others.
Glad to hear you had a good result. It does work. Even though the sulfamic acid worked in this situation, I ended up tearing out the whole job and doing it again because I generally did a poor job placing the tile and still had significant lippage, etc. even after getting the grout off the face. Thanks for posting your feedback and happy to hear you had good results.
After using this product on tile, you are supposed to go back over your tile with ammonia to neutralize the acid that is still in the grout, to keep it from etching or crumbling out.
I do grouting and on large work on a warm day I leave too much excess grout after sponging so I tried an orbital-sander using P-180 grit pads connected to the vacuum cleaner and works a treat! Test one lower tile with a sander first and check for scratches? Be cautious on darker tiles or if they have had a clear coat over the glazed tile? Check for any changes to gloss level. Glazed tiles won’t scratch
Distilled vinegar 5% acid worked for me. I wet the dried grout and let the vinegar in contact for 5min and then used kitchen paper tower to wipe it out. Voila clean
NSAP... Hello. Where do I begin? Thank you so much for posting your message! I had contractors put in a new kitchen ceramic tile floor. They told me to wash the floor once the grout dried. I waited days, thinking the grout would not adhere to the tiles. I can't tell you how messed up our new kitchen floor is. I tried a low grade steel wool and many cleaners. My son is on a toxic free environment program for health issues so cleaning and the home remodel was a challenge. I was so afraid to use any chemical to remove the grout so I searched and found this video. I figured our son could stay at a family members home while it was being cleaned. To be continued... 🍃💜🍃Lynne
Continued... So, around 4:30am, wide awake doing things in our home... I seen your message. I thought vinegar? I clean with vinegar, I cook with vinegar.... I HAVE VINEGAR! I quickly opened the bottle and poured a bit on the tile... ( I actually set my clock for 5 min! ) I could see the vinegar bubbles moving on the surface. I took a napkin and rubbed the grout off! I'm actually emotional over this, lol! Not only did you save our floor but you kept our son safe! I am grateful and extremely THANKFUL! -to be continued 🍃💜🍃Lynne
@@lynnecarnivale5085 So glad that worked for you! I am going to try it tomorrow! I had a older tile guy install large format ceramic tile in my laundry room and entry way. He didn't clean all the grout and me, being super anal, figured when he is done, I will get it up to 'my' standards. Well, I began that task a few hours ago... using water and a micro-fiber cloth..... I got about half the laundry room done before I realized I now have friction burns and a few blisters on my finger tips!!! So I will go get a non-scratch pad tomorrow and use some of my vinegar! Best of luck to your family!
Diyer's tip.... I recently laid new tile in my bathroom and made the mistake of not getting all the grout complexly off my tiles. HUGE mistake!!!! It dried there rock hard and nothing helped. I watched all the hack videos on how to make a scrub brush attachment for a drill. I watched the videos swearing that a Nyalox cup brush for a drill would work. Nothing took it off. (Did I mention it was black grout on white tile?) The Nyalox brush didn't budge it but actually melted/damaged a 2 inch square spot at the bottom of my tub when I got too close.😤😕 Then I remembered this video from youtube channel Clean My Space, shrugged and said "Couldn't hurt." So I made a thin paste of baking soda and vinegar drizzled it over my tile and let this set for 30 minutes. I then took a non scratch 3m pot scrub pad for nonstick cookware and rubbed a couple of times. No major elbow grease involved. I mean my arms and back were already really sore at this point from the previous scrubbing. This stuff worked AMAZING!!!!! There were a few really bad spots so I just reapplied and let it set while I did the rest of the floor then ate dinner. When I came back it polished right off!!!! Thanks to Melissa at Clean My Space for saving my new bathroom floor, not to mention my aching body!!!!!!!!
That baking soda is amazing stuff. Just enough abrasive to get stuff off without scratching. It is also the best I've found for getting coffee and tea stains out of mugs. Thanks for the input!
I’ve scrubbed the floor on my knees and it would not come off. I just saw your post and tried it and it came off like it was just dirt. 😮I just used vinegar. Thank you!!
You are so nice to some of these people. Haha...I just used this product to remove Haze and excess chunks my employee left behind . (She got on the phone as well). I got the Haze off before but still had chunks to work on. While doing that last night I created another Haze. What a pain in the ass this has been!! I've decided that I need to do it in sections so that's it's rinsed immediately. Hoping that prevents more Haze. Thank you for your video. They were trying vinegar until I looked online and saw your video and got them to try the acid. I think she was afraid of a strong mix and that's why I'm on the job now. I mixed it as strong as the label suggests 8 oz per gallon (or less water I did). Safety glasses & gloves. Made pretty quick work of it. Just have to remember to rinse ALOT. Im wondering about the the comment on using ammonia to halt acid. Open the windows!! Guess I need to research that one because I have been concerned about that considering the strength I'm using. Sorry you had to redo your shower. Live and learn but the best part is sharing it and helping people like me! Thanks again!
Thanks for the good words and glad it worked for you. Opening the windows is extremely important as the fumes can be pretty bad. I don't have windows and ended up getting corrosion on the chrome fixtures just from the fumes. Thanks again for the nice comment and glad to hear this helped you.
Brother let me tell you I built the steam shower this week and I did the same thing. Could have swore you could leave tec sanded ground on the wall for an hour I was wrong thanks for the video definitely going to need this
It did an ok job but honestly my hazing was so thick I just used a ultra fine piece if sand paper to clear up the remainder and it didnt mark my tile at all doing that

The devil is in the detail. Without knowing why how when and where it may alter your outcome if any variables are different. People are so impatient but always complain when it doesn’t work. Thank the man for his time and move on. Apply what works and disregard what doesn’t. Don’t be so nasty or negative.
My guess is your probably still trying to get that grout cleaned up. Best way in my opinion is to buy a grout line scraper and scrape all lines and redo it the proper way. And looks like your tub is going to need to be replaced
+J. García I'd suggest a mask for pretty much any of this work as it is often done in enclosed space. The problem is finding one that actually protects against various fumes. If working with acid or solvents, obviously the requirements are higher than simply dust from scrubbing. But yes, I do recommend getting the right kind of protection (gloves included) for the job. Haha...yes, you are correct. Bad move. I ended up tearing everything out anyway, including the tub. Put in a shower base and re-did the tile the correct way. Turned out great the 2nd time. Hard and expensive lesson to learn. Thanks for watching and for the comment!
hmmm.... i'm trying to remove the grout from BETWEEN the tiles - well actually the cement used to bond it to the wall because I guess i ended up using too much - i underestimated how difficult it would be to get the tiles to bond to the wall without sliding down - anyway- so now I have most of my grout joints filled up the cement - I spent a good month or so trying to grind out the joints but it's messy and patchy.. so i thought maybe muriatic acid or something might work? anyone tried this???
Sometimes the best thing to do is tear the tile down and redo the entire job. Otherwise you may end up wasting hours and hours and still end up with a result you are not happy with. Just my two cents worth. Good luck!
I think you missed the point. I admitted that the tile job and grout job was horrible and I was not giving advice on how to do tile or grout. I was simply sharing what I learned from my mistake. And if you read through these comments, you'll see that other people have made similar mistakes. Obviously, the best solution is to avoid the bad job in the first place, but some of us learn the hard way. If you have a suggestion for a better way to clean dried grout, please let us know.
That's gotta be 1 of the worst grout jobs I've ever seen🤣...do (1) short wall.wrap the corner about a ft.STOP,clean, change your water.do the top half of back wall ,wrap your corner....STOP.CHANGE YOUR WATER.wash ,rinse repeat....all else fails, have a real tile guy do it🤣

Or you can use 30% vinegar for gnarly stuff
