Longtime Mac user but built my first PC this week. Was banging my desk trying to get the bootable USB to work before I came across this video. Extremely helpful step-by-step and it worked like a charm! Thank you so much. Keep up the good work.
Thanks a lot for this tutorial. My PC's motherboard died some time ago, and thanks to this method I was able to use my Mac to create a Windows installation drive for my PC when the replacement parts arrived, instead of having to borrow a working PC from a friend. Saved me a lot of time.
life saver!!! Just want to clarify this to everyone. If you just get the ISO from MS website and burn it directly on the USB you will have issues with the SATA and NVME drivers. On the other hand, using this method saves you the day and everything will work perfectly.
I had tried multiple things - including PassFab and Unetbootin - none worked. The process from this tutorial nailed it (and addressed the reasons the other approaches failed.) Solid thanks.
I use an older version of macOS(Yosemite) and I couldn't install homebrew because of that but I was able to install wimlib using MacPorts. I just want to say thank you for your tutorial it worked beautifully and I am installing windows now. may you be successful in all your ventures, and more knowledge, and power to you.
This worked like a charm. I wanted to make sure I comment to say thank you and recommend this method to anyone using a Mac to do this. Thank you so much! For anyone wondering, splitting the large file in 2 didn’t affect clean windows installation on my PC. This is explained in the version of this vid for Windows 11, but just thought I might put someone’s mind at rest since I wondered about that before going ahead
I ran into an error in terminal at 5:13 Instead of installing wimlib, it claims to not find any available formula with the name "wimlib". Anything I can try to fix this?
Run these commands: rm -rf $(brew --repo homebrew/core) Then: brew tap homebrew/core After doing so, try to install wimlib. It may show an error that some commands need to run as sudo. Run those commands, install again and it works!
LIFE SAVER! Thank you! I've had a Win10 bootable USB, used it over the last 2 years without any issues. HOWEVER, this new PC I came across would not read it. Turns out, it was the fact that it was EXFAT. Using your guide I put it as Fat32 format, and now it is able to read through the boot sequence of this new ( and crappy) HP tower! The format was the difference. Thanks!!
Thanks man, I built my Gaming PC on Sunday, it’s now Thursday and thanks to your video I was able to add windows to my Gaming PC using my MacBook as no one I knew had a regular laptop ( Lenovo/HP etc) following your video step by step I was able to move on after completing my build Thanks again 👍🏾
Thank you! I have spent 4 hours searching on the internet this is the only method that work for me. Your tutorial is very detailed and novice friendly.
Are you using a Silicon-based Mac (M1/M2/M3/...)? In that case you will need to copy/paste the additionally mentioned commands after the copied brew installation script ran. See my blog for more details.
Everything has been good up until the part where i have to split it at 05:25 After typing everything exactly the way you did it says "Some uncommon options are not listed; see `man wimsplit' for more details." I don't know what to do or maybe i did something wrong, please help, someone, thanks
Exactly this helped for my B550i Aorus Pro AX (rev 1.0) clean install. It did support the Ryzen 5 5600X from the box with F11 BIOS, but couldn't read the exFAT formatted USB, where I regularly dropped the files from the ISO (no 4GB limit). If anyone wondering, you don't need to remove the 2 hidden folders on the USB (.spotlight- and .fs- something)
you saved me not only once but twice, in both of my installations of windows. Who needs bootcamp when you got jensd anyway? Thanks a lot man, I really really appreciate the help.
Hey im stuck in the minute 6:50, in my terminal trying to get cd downloads/brigadier-master (it literally says cd: no such file or directory: Downloads/brigadier-master) when I have the downloads file open and I see the file... Don't know what to do here, pls help im so near to fishing it 😭😭😭
Unusual for me to comment but this was such a great guide (after a few attempts on my own part)! Works on a Mac 10.13.6 with a little bit of patience letting the code run. Thank you!
I just lost a whole day failing based on other tutorials, but this one FTW! At 2:19 here was the difference : I had not unhidden all volumes before formatting the USB before, so the Disk Utility didn't show the option drop down to set it as "MBR". Then upon booting and installing, the PC would not be able to process further and install. Did this with the USB formatted into MBR early enough made the USB operational for install. Thanks!
HI Iam block on 5:32 about commande mine display différent: bash-3.2$ ls -1 /Volumes BOOTCAMP CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9 OSXRESERVED USB TSAYA WINDOWS maco how can i type?
Being *nix user for years, I thought that using simple dd if=... like usual to burn ISO on flash drive is enough. Installer started, but I immediately had an issue with NVMe, it was not visible for Windows 11. Following your tutorial I was able to pass this step. Thank you a lot for sharing!
This worked great! I was able to create a bootable USB on my MBP with M1 Pro with Monterey. Windows installation went flawless on the laptop I was repairing.
I just want to say that I love you! I have been trying to reboot my pc from a flash drive since Friday. This video 100% helped me do that! Thank you so much!!! I can now play my game again
Only the EFI boot option shows up when I insert the usb key and that launches something from mac, but no windows 11 boot option shows up. I did all the steps except the support software I downloaded through boot camp assistant. And I used a Windows 11 iso in stead of 10. Cant seem to find it on google :(
Great guide, but had to fix an issue I ran into that may save someone a headache. If you did everything this guide said, but are being prompted with “Insert Windows installation disc 2.” when attempting to install onto your PC, make sure that when you follow the terminal command part of this video that you put install.swm instead of install.wim at the end before the 4000. It’s hard to see in this video and he doesn’t say it out loud, so easy to miss. So your terminal command should look like: wimlib-imagex split /Volumes/CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-US_DV9/sources/install.wim /Volumes/USB/sources/install.swm 4000 Also, where it says USB ^^ in that command prompt, that’s just the name I made for USB, make sure you put in the correct name of your USB in this part of the command. 👍🏼
Hello. I want to take the time to leave a comment and thank you for this video that actually worked. I have been at this for 2 days now and finally I can get some sleep. If any other technical problems should arise I will be coming here first. Thanks once again. I just subscribed to make it easier.
i have paragon ntfs on my mac. and its added the ntfs file system in my disk utility when trying to erase the usb drive. can i select that one to avoid this extra steps?
This literally did it, everything else did not work and couldn't use the Windows Creation Tool because the drive I was using before was being stupid and so Mac was my only hope and this worked perfectly, thank you!!
Thanks for this man. It was so much easier to make a bootable USB drive on a mac like 3 years ago. You could just use Bootcamp Assistant then. Now I don't think you can. What garbage. Thanks for this tutorial!
This was easy to follow. Thanks. I saw a lot of guides on the internet with whatever programs to install, but you know shit works when the terminal comes out. Thanks mate.
When I have to split the file I write what is Nesscary but gives an error saying “wimlib-images split WIMFILE SPLIT_WIM_PART_1 PART_SIZE_MB {- - check} Please help me in the step

I had tried so many other ways (including uubyte) to make a bootable windows 10 USB using my MAC with no luck, and was about to give up when I bumped into your tutorial. I followed your steps and finally ended up with a bootable Windows USB. Thank you!!
hay :) everything has worked fine until 6:50 keeps showing : Traceback (most recent call last): File "./brigadier", line 14, in import requests ImportError: No module named requests after I type in the command ./brigadier . not sure how to fix it
You found how do do an Windows bootable USB. You are wonderful. Just say, if someone has a problem with the wimlib-imagex command, and have a read-only error… just copy this big file in your desktop and try it using this. That. Working … and I can format a ssd too… WOW…
Typing in the part at 5:47 gives me an error saying read only. Trying to change it to read and write tells me I don't have permission. Don't know what else to do
If it's read-only, could it be that you have the mounted ISO as destination rather than source? Verify if you have the correct volume names: first the ISO (most likely starting with CCCOMA...) after that the volume name of the USB drive, which you entered during the preparation of it in Disk Utility. In case you have these correct, check if you can create a file/folder on your USB drive with Finder. I've also found that sometimes broken USB-drives become read-only over time.

Make sure all files required for installation are available, and restart the installation Error code: 0x80070570 ОК” message. Is there anything I can do to fix this issue?
I have some other videos that could help you as well. Check out the rest of my channel. It can differ a bit per model but in general this is what you need.
It worked until i tried to install on my new pc. My problem was that when I went to install windows on the pc it said it couldn't find the file install.wim (the one that I split) help pls. (edit) I fixed it. You just have to rename both of them to install.wim and install(1).wim
I have done the formatting the USB stick the way you suggested and copied the whole content of mounted ISO image on it except Brigadier. The USB stick is 16 Gb size. It failed to boot and hang. The machine is Macbook Pro late 2008 with OCLP installed. Any suggestion?
Does this process install any files (i.e. wimlib and Homebrew) on my iMac? If so how can I use Terminal to delete the files that were installed after I've created a bootable USB drive? Thanks!
trying to instal windows 10 on 2009 MacBookpro. Every possible error in the book has been thrown at me including home-brew not installing and only goes to "may require password" tried it on a new 2017 MacBook Pro with same results even after installing x-code. I can create a 32 bit win 10 disc but my 2009 doesn't recognize it as a startup disc. pleeeaase help
When i do the command to split the file shown at 5:28, it does not work and this is what it says: Usage: wimlib-imagex split WIMFILE SPLIT_WIM_PART_1 PART_SIZE_MB [--check] Some uncommon options are not listed; see `man wimsplit' for more details. I have tried many times and im sure the command i entered is correct. I need helo to get past this part.
8:54 may i ask you how could it be, windows usb installation media can boot with native resolution ? Is it about motherboard feature or special setting inside usb installer media maybe xml file modification?
Not sure why this happens, I think it is part of UEFI to be able to do this. Doesn't need any special modification on the USB drive or installation files.
Thank you for making this tutorial my pc needed to have a windows repair and I am new to the mac os and couldnt use the windows creation program but this is the only tutorial that worked thanks :)))))))))))))
Thanks for this video. Very useful. Double clicking on the iso file does not open it on the OSX Ventura 13.3. Luckily Disk Utility => File => Open Disk Image does the trick.
at 4:50 what should I do if my mac doesn't want to skip the request for a password? My mac is currently on the Sequoia OS 15. I've followed every step so far
Hi, when I try to download windows, it worked but it says windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space and needs to be partitioned as NTFS. Would you know what I’m going wrong?
I am almost done, however I don't know how to download the required drivers for my MacBook Pro 15 inch mid 2010. I don't know how to pass it using the -model parameter.. please advise
Thank you so much for this, Im just stumbling at the last hurdle and getting 'env: python: No such file or directory' when I type in './brigadier'. Any advise?
I install the new SSD on my old Mac9,1 and when I try to boot windows 10 from USB it always stuck on loading screen and never let the startup show and gives error with blue screen and reboot. Any soluitons ?
do you have any suggestions? I just have a problem with copying files on the installation process, basically like it reaches 95% and then a random error
what do i do if it says “A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source.” when i instered the flash drive?
Hey, everything up until 5:28 works fine, after I run the command I get an error "read only", I tried to change the permission settings of the "CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-GB_DV9" vol, but didn’t succeed.
CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-GB_DV9 is the mounted ISO and is not writeable. Make sure you have the arguments as follows: wimlib-imagex split /Volumes/CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-GB_DV9/sources/install.wim /Volumes/WINUSB/sources/install.swm 4000 Replace WINUSB with the name you have to the volume on the USB-drive (you can use tab to complete or ls /Volumes first to check that)
Help please! Everything went well up until using Brigadier in the terminal (Btw the zip files download as brigadier-main now instead of master). So when I'm in terminal and type in the second line "./brigadier" an error pops up saying "Import Error: no module named requests" and won't allow me to progress. Help please!
If you're struggling with the command-line for Brigadier. Have a look at Bombardier, which comes with a GUI, same purpose: github.com/ninxsoft/Bombardier
Trying to run the command: wimlib-imagex split /Volumes/CCCOMA_X64FRE_PT-PT_DV9/sources/install.wim /Volumes/WINDOWS HD/sources/install.swm 4000 I receive the message: Usage: wimlib-imagex split WIMFILE SPLIT_WIM_PART_1 PART_SIZE_MB [--check] Some uncommon options are not listed; see `man wimsplit' for more details. Any help?
It means that once you have Windows 10 installed on a Mac, you can launch setup.exe from Windows to install the bootcamp utility and drivers. Not on macOS
@@jensdbe Oh, okay. I also have a problem: I succesfully did all in that video to the USB drive but when I launch the Windows installer on my Mac, after accepting Terms and conditions and choosing the type of the installation, it gives me only two drives: "System" and "Primary". I don't remember their names, but to the "Primary" it says that it cannot be installed and to the "System" there is only 200mb left. My Macbook though has over 10gb left (I want to install it to a USB drive and when I plug it in to my Macbook, I can use Windows 10.) I don't want to delete the drives shown there or start editing them in the Windows installation because I am scared that I delete all my data from my Mac. Could you please help and clarify things to me. I am beginner at these things. Edit: it says only to NTFS format can be installed.
did u correctly install homebrew first? if not, do that. If you're still getting an error after putting the correct command in, check if you have enough storage space, that's the only thing I can think of that would cause an error. I'm definitely not an expert so sry if this didn't help.
I used the birgadier-main zip and it didn't work, so I tried the Bombardier-main zip and when I wrote ./Bombardier into the code it said zsh: permission denied: ./Bombardier Any advice?
Overall, a nice video, but I'm still confused about the boot up part because I followed the instructions to the letter except for Brigadier and Wimlib because I thought you said we can use Homebrew or Wimlib, it doesn't matter, but you prefer us to use Homebrew, which I did, but I still downloaded Wimlib because I wasn't trying to download Windows on my Mac like I was trying to download Windows Boot Media on my Mac, but I'm getting a (3F0) Error on my Windows Laptop that what I am trying to fix they recommended your video so I am here but your kinda was easy and understand in not hard to do so what am I doing wrong
Very Cool Tutorial, well explained......I do have a question though. the original file name in sources (install.wim) when we split the file according to you tutorial we renamed it to install.swm and install.swm1? wouldn't we want to keep the same name install.wim not install.swm?

Thanks a lot for this tutorial. My PC's motherboard died some time ago, and thanks to this method I was able to use my Mac to create a Windows installation drive for my PC when the replacement parts arrived, instead of having to borrow a working PC from a friend. Saved me a lot of time.
Good to hear, thanks for the nice feedback :)
Spent an entire evening stumbling with tutorials that got me absolutely nowhere. Yours finally worked, thanks so much for being a lifesaver!
Absolute lifesaver, I have spent too long trying to make a bootable USB for my laptop. Thanks so much!
Mac user that wanted to make a USB that'd be bootable on a non-Mac (bootable on a PC): This tutorial worked great! Thanks so much!

How did you use Wimlib with MacPorts? I have wimlib installed with MacPorts but can’t figure out what command will split the file, pls help!

Thanks for the nice feedback. I indeed explain this a bit more/better in that newer video so good to mention it here :)
I ran into an error in terminal at 5:13
Instead of installing wimlib, it claims to not find any available formula with the name "wimlib".
Anything I can try to fix this?
did you ever figure it out?
Run these commands:
rm -rf $(brew --repo homebrew/core)
Then:
brew tap homebrew/core
After doing so, try to install wimlib. It may show an error that some commands need to run as sudo. Run those commands, install again and it works!
@@desamet5554 JUST THANK YOUUUUUUUU :)
I don't know how, but only your way of creating installation USB worked for me. Wasted 4 hours before finding it. Thank you very much.
I usually don’t comment but this was really helpful for someone with 3 macs and no windows. Thanks 🙏
I used Etcher (and others) before but I found issues after the boot loaded. This solution works properly. Thank you for sharing.

I have done the formatting the USB stick the way you suggested and copied the whole content of mounted ISO image on it except Brigadier. The USB stick is 16 Gb size. It failed to boot and hang. The machine is Macbook Pro late 2008 with OCLP installed. Any suggestion?
Wow fantastic, you just saved my dual boot Ubuntu/Windows. Hartelijk dank!!
Glad I could help!
At 5:42 is the destination file 'install.swm' (as it is in the video) or is it supposed to be 'install.wim' ? Thanks :)
Install.swm as in the video. The S in SWM is for splitted :)
@@jensdbe Thank you so much for this video. Helped a lot 👍👍
When I go for the wimlib-imagex split ….. it says Illegal hardware instruction. Any suggestions ?
I’m having the same issue I hope he sees out comment and responds😭
Works like a charm! Thanks much for posting this.
When i do the command to split the file shown at 5:28, it does not work and this is what it says:
Usage:
wimlib-imagex split WIMFILE SPLIT_WIM_PART_1 PART_SIZE_MB [--check]
Some uncommon options are not listed; see `man wimsplit' for more details.
I have tried many times and im sure the command i entered is correct. I need helo to get past this part.
Can you share the command you used? That would help.
1:48 the mounting step here is broken on my mac, some how after downloading the file my mac is unable to mount and does nothing
I also liked and subscribed because you're a real one :)
Thanks for this video. Very useful. Double clicking on the iso file does not open it on the OSX Ventura 13.3. Luckily Disk Utility => File => Open Disk Image does the trick.
I believe there was a way with right click on the file as well but good to know there is another method. Thanks :)
@@jensdbe same issue also with the right click 😉
at 4:50 what should I do if my mac doesn't want to skip the request for a password? My mac is currently on the Sequoia OS 15. I've followed every step so far
Just enter your user's password and press enter. You don't see anything while you type.
Hi @jensd_be, do we need the 'installation media' version of the Windows OS? Will the .iso version really work on a new pc build?
There is only a single version as far as I know. The ISO you can download from Microsoft's website for Windows 10 or 11 can be used to install.
Hi, when I try to download windows, it worked but it says windows cannot be installed to this hard disk space and needs to be partitioned as NTFS. Would you know what I’m going wrong?
Same is this happening to anyone else?
Yes me too
You need to partition ur usb stick to that format
I am almost done, however I don't know how to download the required drivers for my MacBook Pro 15 inch mid 2010. I don't know how to pass it using the -model parameter.. please advise
Thank you so much for this, Im just stumbling at the last hurdle and getting 'env: python: No such file or directory' when I type in './brigadier'. Any advise?
Same here
A very useful video - have you any experience in flashing PC cards for use on a Mac?
I have not, it's something that is on my list for one day. As I do have a programmer so it should be doable.
This worked a treat, thank you so much!!
Thank you! Worked perfectly!
what do i do if it says “A recent hardware or software change might have installed a file that is signed incorrectly or damaged, or that might be malicious software from an unknown source.” when i instered the flash drive?
Hey, everything up until 5:28 works fine, after I run the command I get an error "read only", I tried to change the permission settings of the "CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-GB_DV9" vol, but didn’t succeed.
CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-GB_DV9 is the mounted ISO and is not writeable. Make sure you have the arguments as follows:
wimlib-imagex split /Volumes/CCCOMA_X64FRE_EN-GB_DV9/sources/install.wim /Volumes/WINUSB/sources/install.swm 4000
Replace WINUSB with the name you have to the volume on the USB-drive (you can use tab to complete or ls /Volumes first to check that)
@@jensdbe Thank you for the solution! Worked for me:)
Having a problems to execute the brigadier, I tried to use python 2.7 but it seems there are some issues with import statements
Help please! Everything went well up until using Brigadier in the terminal (Btw the zip files download as brigadier-main now instead of master). So when I'm in terminal and type in the second line "./brigadier" an error pops up saying "Import Error: no module named requests" and won't allow me to progress. Help please!
When i run the ./brigadier command i get this error: env: python: No such file or directory.
If you're struggling with the command-line for Brigadier. Have a look at Bombardier, which comes with a GUI, same purpose: github.com/ninxsoft/Bombardier
Trying to run the command:
wimlib-imagex split /Volumes/CCCOMA_X64FRE_PT-PT_DV9/sources/install.wim /Volumes/WINDOWS HD/sources/install.swm 4000
I receive the message:
Usage:
wimlib-imagex split WIMFILE SPLIT_WIM_PART_1 PART_SIZE_MB [--check]
Some uncommon options are not listed; see `man wimsplit' for more details.
Any help?
7:50 What does it mean? Do I have to install the setup.exe? Mac cannot open exe files? Sorry if I misunderstood something.
Perfect video! Thanks a lot for sharing this knowledge
when i go to install wimlib it keeps popping up with error, anyone know what to do?
did u correctly install homebrew first? if not, do that. If you're still getting an error after putting the correct command in, check if you have enough storage space, that's the only thing I can think of that would cause an error. I'm definitely not an expert so sry if this didn't help.
Yoo great tutorial so far. But I can't do this splitting part in the terminal window. Could u help by any chance??
Did you figure this out?
I used the birgadier-main zip and it didn't work, so I tried the Bombardier-main zip and when I wrote ./Bombardier into the code it said zsh: permission denied: ./Bombardier
Any advice?
When I’m trying to use brigadier the extracted folder is called brigadier main
If you're having trouble using Brigadier, have a look at Bombardier. Basically a GUI version of Brigadier: github.com/ninxsoft/Bombardier
Very Cool Tutorial, well explained......I do have a question though. the original file name in sources (install.wim) when we split the file according to you tutorial we renamed it to install.swm and install.swm1? wouldn't we want to keep the same name install.wim not install.swm?
having the same problem rn my guy
