- Mahjong tile making is so rare that even the tools such as the drills, scrapers and lamps are impossible to come by ‒ they cannot be bought and have to be made by hand.
“Mahjong craftsmanship is very much a cultural creation of Hong Kong. Very few people here still work their craft. I know that if I do not work hard to tell their stories, it will be lost,” says Karen Aruba, a third-generation member of a mahjong tile making family.

A name alone does not define one's ethnicity or culture. As open-minded people, we should appreciate an artist for their creative works and unique perspectives, without making superficial judgement. Cultural exchange is best advanced through mutual understanding and respect between all people. Thanks Karen who is trying hard to preserve dying culture!

Karen’s Chinese name is Cheung, as it's her father's last name. ‘Karen Aruba' is just her illustrator name, a common choice among artists to represent their artwork as this holds her precious memory with grandma in the small island named ‘Aruba’.
I truly appreciate her passion for promoting the art of mahjong with her father talents and educating the public that mahjong is also an intangible cultural heritage; it even holds deeper, meaningful value beyond our expectations.
