Remove GRC so that we will get high quality MPs who has to fight for their seat by their own merit. You may pair minority race MPs for certain constituencies to ensure minority representations. This new world requires you to step up with bold policies. Don't just stick to the old playbook from your predecessors as they have lost their effectiveness. @benjaminthamy.k.7414 mentioned quite a few principles in my comments. Key principle is to focus on our people, our community and our nation. Let's us be proud to be Singaporeans again! Leave no one behind. Encourage empowerment, autonomy and gracious initiatives. For example CDC vouchers: Empower those who don't need them to donate to those who need them more. This fosters a more gracious/caring society and allow those who are better off to give the needy a helping hand. Reduce hawker centers stall rents to reduce cost of food at the same time explore how we can make new neighborhood eateries more happening like Timbre at Ayer Rajah to liven up the heartlands. Amy Khor's 10 cent beverage container is a nightmare policy in the making as it just creates resentment to make it mandatory to charge 10 cent deposit upfront per can/bottle. Alernatively, we may create initiatives for older and poorer folks to participate in the beverage container collection, allowing them the opportunity to benefit from it. We urgently need to empower our people. Make them feel that they have the power to make their lives better and as a people, we look out for one another. This is currently deeply missing in our society. 🙏🙏🙏

I agree with SM Chan that GST, property tax, carbon tax,CPF contribution, water and electricity still increase during this inflationary period. These increases seem to be ongoing. Redoubling efforts like payouts, increasing workers' wages, etc cannot catch up to the increasing cost of living. We cannot keep blaming external factors.
New Zealand GST is 15%, and their inflation is higher and longer than Singapore's. GST had to be increased sooner or later, that's unavoidable. For Singapore it was actually a good time to increase cos it also helped tame inflation pressures; the only other alternatives would have been to effectively keep interest rates inflated, which would have severely slowed down the economy and lead to a lot of job loses, or (equivalently) allow the SG dollar to appreciate drastically, which would have made SG products less competitive and probably use up more of our reserves to do so.

PAP has been flooding Singapore with the cheapest workers from the cheapest countries. It's naive to think that low-quality foreign workers can deliver a first world economy for Singapore. It's even more naive if you think inflating a huge expensive training industry, which is funded by taxpayers' money, can lift up the quality of the workforce. Going to/leaving work place: Young Chinese lady: Takes out her HP, gives an instruction, her EV will leave the parking lot automatically and come to her location. Young Singaporean: Waits for crowded feeder bus, enters the crowded MRT train, smells the stink of sweat in the air. Ha ha ha!
OPINE, Singaporeans are among the luckiest people in the World, nonetheless, the future remains challenging indeed in the present rather "fractured and troubled world" where Geo-Politics and regional rivalries continue to escalate. May the Almighty continues to Bless and Protect, The Republic of Singapore and all Singaporeans, whatever their origins.
Counting on the Iskandar SEZ to help ease some inflationary pressures in SG but only if, and a very big if, the MY /JB administration could deliver or agree over the long haul. It would be a continuous risk assessment on both sides, unless one side is less skilled or incompetent
Sir, do You know what will keep prices of goods low? An insanely high supply of it over meeting the demand. And that means we should stop importing goods because of the high import tax and make our own.
There is an article on executive condo - some what a hybrid public housing, from about $750 psft to 1450 psft in short few years. Capital gain for owner? Maybe in $ sense, but purchasing power sense, they are not really gaining. As for younger folks, they will slog till old age. Resale hdb price is no different living in other developed country if not more expensive. Is the current policy working? Is 1 to 1.5M hdb pricing the way to go? Even a 600 to 700k hdb is sky high for public housing. It not difficult, just compare the salary now and then vs housing. At what age can you pay off the loans. Are we really getting richer? Or poorer? Once it get too expensive, business will shun to reduce cost. Business activities will be gone. As a Singaporean i am not looking for high salary but rather an improved purchasing power. This can be deduced why people are going JB to do groceries. Let see what happens in very near future
Some questions Will GST reach 12% by 2035 ? Will BTO become 500K by 2035 ? Will total population reach 8 million by 2050 ? 10 million by 2070 ? Will prices of HDB's build during1960-1980 become 0 upon the end of 99-year lease in 2060-2079? WIll there be any lease extention? Will people be evicted forcefully ?

In 1980 and 1990, there were many MNCs in Singapore. Now the MNCs left Singapore.HP and IBM were two of them. Why is that so? Is it due to high operational cost ?
Now many MNCs return but they are not coming back to Singapore. Why ?
Recently, Microsoft invested 2.2 billions in Malaysia. Why Microsoft didn't choose Singapore?
see how long Microsoft stays in Malaysia?
Microsoft invest in Malaysia to build Big AI Data Center, do Singapore have the land to do so ?
@jly5828 it's just a land use resource and consumes power. Does not generate that many jobs. Look.at the underlying economics. Not all that glitters is gold. In any case we should be happy for Malaysia

It's true that many mnc are building state of the art facilities. But they are only seeking experienced, senior operator and technicians. You can't build these skills overnight via skills future. These mnc hire diversity and there isn't much Singaporean here. The senior workers are getting older and young Singaporean don't have enough skills.

Why must each time depend on LKY's allure? All I see is high cost of living set upon by 2 regressive GST hikes. High COE, HDB out of affordability range. Sandwiched middle class. Even basic food at hawker centers are getting out of reach for the food.

Together we will strive ahead as one nation, one people, one Singapore! Yay!! Happy National Day!
Thank you pm
HAPPY NATIONAL DAY SINGAPORE...
Please lah you increased GST at the wrong time and made it so much worse.
I work in Uganda & Tanzania, the VAT there are 18%
@@NewmaticKe So? Why don't you say the government salaries at Uganda & Tanzania are not million dollars?

Going to/leaving work place:
Young Chinese lady: Takes out her HP, gives an instruction, her EV will leave the parking lot automatically and come to her location.
Young Singaporean: Waits for crowded feeder bus, enters the crowded MRT train, smells the stink of sweat in the air.

The cost of living in Singapore is going up. In the midst of worldly challenges, there are many problems which need to tackle. It is not just Covid.

Good National Day Message...touching the cost of living...housing and jobs for all Singaporeans.Happy National Day to all.
Happy to have this leader, but I’m Taiwanese 😢
Some questions
Will GST reach 12% by 2035 ?
Will BTO become 500K by 2035 ?
Will total population reach 8 million by 2050 ? 10 million by 2070 ?
Will prices of HDB's build during1960-1980 become 0 upon the end of 99-year lease in 2060-2079? WIll there be any lease extention? Will people be evicted forcefully ?
great speech and vision

Good speech but the National Day mood is but just a public holiday unlike the past
Stable high cost of living not lower cost of living , see the tricks ?
So far lw contribution :
Increase gst from 7% to 9% ,
Arrest the public for asking "" tough "" questions in regard to hdb 99 year lease expiry .
Arrest public for not returning cutleries , trays etc to alocated station as fter meal ..
Arrest those who talks or scream loudly in public areas .
Anymore ?
