Tlemcen has a long history and drew its magnificent architecture from the Zirid and Hammadid architecture. The Zirid and Hammadid states are an integral part of Algeria's history, with the Zirid state appearing first, followed by the Hammadid state. This prominent architectural style that Tlemcen is distinguished by has been a source of inspiration for many Moroccans and some other countries that adopted it. Additionally, Tlemcen played a significant role in transmitting this architectural style to Andalusia.

Tlemcen like Achir in Msila are the places where the architectural tiling art has spread in the 10th until the 13th century when it has gone to the Andalusian culture before it comes back to North Africa, over Morocco in the Almoravid dynasty times. In Tlemcen, was the Tachfiniya School in the times of Bouhamou Sultan of the Zianid Kingdom of Tlemcen.
