    I really enjoy how you can do an after-hour call and just get the very basic work done so that you can return during normal hours to do the repairs. Then you repair the damage and clean up and inspect the system to see if any other things get attention before failing again. Excellent use of time and care for the customer. Also I really like the heat-shrink crimp connectors and am moving over to them on my stuff. Great video!

    You have me looking at condensers now, checking to see if they're plugged. Haha. In our shop, there is a small office which is cooled by a large window unit. And it hasn't been cooling well for a couple of weeks. They were set on buying a new one, which is garbage, cause if i needed something for the shop it would take ages and long approvals, but if any of the office people need something they get it same day. Anyhow, pulled the unit out, took it apart and wached the condenser out, plugged full of dust and aluminum powder from the environment we are in. Put it back in and it supposedly cools better than before 😎

    Yep with the contactors there is also the effect on the business, a failed cooler/freezer due to a bad contactor could lead to thousands of dollars of product they then have to throw out. If its an exhaust fan for a kitchen they might have to shutdown until it fixed, again causing thousands of dollars of lost sales and the effect of not having your restaurant open may mean you get a bad reputation among customers, so it isnt just lost sales that day but more in the future.

    I did a job where the owner had OCD and wanted everything perfect even if you could not see it. I pop up in the ceiling on to the unit, flipped a light everything was painted and well lit, I was like WTF outstanding he goes nice isn't it . Anyways someone painter left a thin plastic tarp up their and it sucked onto the coil. Then he gave me a tour and my jaw dropped, the roof had an alarm, we went up and it was spotless. If I worked for you I would order the dispatcher to direct all calls from that location to me PERIOD.

    Haha, a bag in a fan? I have a story.
    I once found a ceiling fan that had some sort of red Mylar streamer of sorts wound up in the center. In this case, it was on a center shaft or something and wasn’t moving with the fan. It was making a quiet s,s,s,s,s,s,s,s,s,s,s,s,s,s,s noise, and the noise went away after I pulled the plastic out. It looked like a few inches at first, but it ended up being a good 5 feet and knotted like crazy! (Fan was a basic white Hampton Bay one, probably from the 90s or so.)
    It seems like these things can actually do damage to faster moving fans! I would have never thought that tiny imbalance could affect a bearing in a motor.

    Your 100% correct the $100-200 contractor is cheap on the follow up call / PM. It’s much more expensive for that callback a month later on overtime when the whole system has tanked, that could have been prevented.
    Your environment also takes a toll on the contractors between sand, ash, smog. They all lead to premature wear on the system.
    On that particular location I thought there was talk of putting a galvanized cover over the line sets to conceal them from the scrappers.

    Great point about 3 phase. But now I pose this question. Why not take that same concern with a phase monitor? Why not protect the equipment from high or low voltage? Either of those may have been the "Big Picture" to have caused that contactor to do that. More so low voltage.. but you get my point. You can have the monitor reset.. but store the faults and when back know 110% in issue or not. Stay safe and be well Chris.

  • @dashcamandy2242
    @dashcamandy2242 2 года назад

    I LOVE heat-shrink butt connectors. They are excellent for electrical repairs on cars and garden tractors, just as robust as their standard counterparts while adding weather resistance (and a tiny bit of mechanical support for the connection itself). Combine those with adhesive-lined heat shrink tubing, and you can make a connection that lasts for years.
    It's always a good idea to check contactors. Contactors are used in high-current applications, and closing/opening high-current circuits creates an arc nearly every time. Burning/pitting of the contact points is just the nature of the beast, and as you mentioned in your closing remarks, single-phasing a compressor will cost the customer exponentially more than changing out a contactor. It's not just a new compressor, it's potential loss of product/business too. Spend a penny to save a pound.
    Changing the fan motor should probably include automatic contactor and capacitor replacement because they all work together, and a failure in one component can sometimes cause cascading failures of the other components. Why bother with a new fan motor if you're going to feed it poor power through a bad contactor, or a cap that could be teetering on the edge of tolerance?

    Someone should invent a smart contractor that has circuitry to detect these failures that can harm downstream equipment and take itself out of service automagically. It would easy to do it with 50 to 60 dollars in parts. Double the price of the contractor. Never blow another compressor. It would end be to difficult as we already have the tech. Just some multimeter parts and an circuit breaker

    I'm an electrician from Germany, i always wonder, why you guys in america don't build in 3 phase check relais... they're 10 bucks but can save a motor from 2phasing.
    Or at least a motor starter with motor protection-relais. Last videos there was one shorted compressor out of 3, that blew the main breaker and the entire unit was down... this may not happen.
    There were only contactors, no protection switches... very poor build quality in my eyes... and when an apprentice does such wiring harnesses like in those units like spider webs... man, he'd get fired the same day!

  • @750kv8
    @750kv8 2 года назад

    It almost looks like someone sneaked in there and vandalized the unit with that plastic bag, because I don't see how it could get in there by itself. The fan pushes out air through the grill, and there's no way that the bag could get through the coil by itself like that. Someone sneaked in, waited for the moment when the fan stopped, then that individual pushed in that bag with a stick or something. Stupid humans can break things in the most ingenious ways. That, or *just perhaps* , the fan ran backward occasionally. So probably it'd have been a good idea to check the runcap of the fan, because that may have been the actual culprit.

    HI CHRIS! WHY DO THESE UNITS NOT USE SOLID STATE CONTRACTORS? THAT WOULD SOLVE THE ISSUES YOU SEE WITH THE POINTS NO?

      The main problem is efficiency.
      SSRs and sold state contactors have a voltage drop across them.
      At high currents this can present a rather substantial power loss.
      Compounded over how long these units run, and how many units they have, this can represent a significant energy loss - and cost.
      Coupling with how aggressive manufacturers and governments alike are getting in pursuing every last watthour of efficiency, I'm honestly not surprised they aren't really used.
      An exception would be in a lower power situation where rapid cycle times are needed, such as an unload solenoid for higher setpoint accuracy.
      Unloading systems can cycle as rapidly as once every few seconds, which would present a rather severe problem for contact erosion. A solid state solution would be ideal here.

      a 40 amp 3 phase contactor is $30, a 40 amp SSR will run you $200 the reasons are clear.

      @@FerralVideo 👍 Voltage drop = heat. Heat in a place that is already hot is a bigger task to deal with, so it is now not just a SSR
