Always wondered about the gas port. Precision shooters take note of tiny imperfections of the bore wall, but a gas gun has a huge hole in the bore wall. What about that?
What about it? Gas port doesn't affect anything. The imperfections you speak of has more to do with fire cracking, bore fouling, carbon rings in the chamber, things like that.
Gas guns are just fun. Not as precise as open division bolt guns but they are far better than they used to be and let's be honest, for PRS more times than not if you have a rifle that can hold 1 moa consistently then you can shoot PRS. Rarely do targets go sub moa size. Sure, having a rifle that hold 1/2 moa (or tighter) certainly makes it better but for most people they are in it to have fun. (Talking just about the people that stick to monthly local/club matches)
How many gas guns do you see in benchrest ,short range or long range??? Even in PRS they have to be put in their own class, because they cant keep up accuracy wise!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
They keep up just fine with production class bolt actions but they can't keep up with open division. Even at that I've placed higher than open division shooters with my gas gun. It's about the operator not the rifle most of the time. And why bring up bench rest when talking about PRS? Two different worlds.

get both!
That's what I did this year. Gas gun in 6 ARC and open division bolt gun in 6 Dasher. Both are fun!

Show about gas guns. Proceeds to simulate firing a Barrett M107 thats recoil operated..who comes up with this
