Me and my mates in the 80s used to explore around on that bridge and the tunnel over at Heaton Junction when we were kids; back then, though, there was security fencing at each end of the overgrown idge. As a bricklayer, the brick is either made from Staffordshire blue engineering bricks or Accrington Nori bricks, called Nori because, during the process of making them, they put the stamp the wrong way around. Hence, it stamped out NORI instead of the intended IRON. They are heavy and like iron, hence the name. Great quality brickwork that has stood the test of time, just a shame about the ugly graffiti all over it. That fencing must be new, was not like that in the 80s and 90s, you used to be able to walk where you wanted.
I remember this viaduct when it was fenced off and covered in trees before it became a Greenway, the arches were sound but the parapets were in a poor state and had to be repaired and stabilized with a concrete cap. Bradley Viaduct crosses the Huddersfield Broad Canal and River Colne so I don't really understand your reference to the Calder & Hebble Navigation (02:35) which is over half a mile away. The bricks are indeed blue engineering bricks which seem to be something of a feature of this area. Nice video.
Aww, thanks, this is awesome, really interesting, I enjoyed this very much. :) And I agree, the design is sturdy and solid, very nice indeed. Shame about the graffiti but at least it can sit quietly under all that and most of it isn't going to be touched again. Once they've slarted their handles all over the lower surfaces they don't tend to come back that often. I wish councils looked after our heritage better!
Yes a nice structure we are still lucky to have as a local 😃 I love the design and Yh it would be nice if the council could get rid of that graffiti ! Glad you enjoyed it 😃.
Very attractive viaduct with some nice touches in the brickwork. It looks wide enough to have had three tracks - anybody know? Regarding graffiti - I hate it - I reckon its biggest fans are the paint and spray can manutacturers!
A fine example of our industrial past and emphasises Huddersfield’s importance in it,another historical video very good.
