He's is cool, just think at the end of the fake karakura town arc if he had a redemption moment he would have been a more impactful player. It just seems like he was used, but doesn't have the same excise everyone else did, since his being blind would mean he wouldn't be effected by aizens shikai
I like to think Suzumushi reverted to an Asauchi when his friend died, but kept its shape. I would also like to think it was still called Suzumushi when she used it, but spelled with different kanji. So, it looked like the same sword and sounded like the same name, but had a different spirit with different abilities and was spelled differently. Superficially it was the same sword, but as soon as you take a deeper look at it, it isn't remotely the same. And I doubt Tōsen ever noticed this difference, thinking he was wielding his friend's sword all this time.
maybe an explanation could be, the Suzumushi, when his friend had it, was still an assauchi, but at the tipping point of becoming a zanpaktou before her husband killed her (the reason for Kaname's revenge)

Edit: Tekking forgot about Kenpachi. Ken gained that sword as a child, off of some Shinigami he killed. And this was before Yachiru was manifested and walking around.
I may be confusing something here, but wasn't his friend also fatally ill somehow? If so that might explain why she did not yet awaken her Zanpakuto from the Asauchi despite having been a Shinigami for some years.
Tousen had such a cool design, i was slightly dissapointed his character wasnt fleshed out more in the story one of my fav characters visually and fighting style

I really hope this is not the last series you're doing on bleach, I would love to see one based around the Espada, visored, fullbringers, Quincy's hell even the bouts

It wasn't a fully realized zanpakuto at the time, but rather one of the "blank" swords still being imprinted upon by the wielder's (probably low) spiritual pressure, so Zaraki probably just overwrote that. Or maybe it's that interference from someone else initially imprinting on the blade, if even only a little, that contributed to why he couldn't hear his zanpakuto. That last part is just me theory crafting, though. If you don't believe that he took an asauchi from a corpse for whatever reason, go read bleach chapter... 529? I think our answer is about there.
@@TheJarJarKinks the issue with all of that though is that we're not sure it works that way. Especially how long you have to have an asauchi before it dies with its wielder. Indeed I'm with Tekking in thinking that Kubo didn't think that part through because its sort of inconsistent.

Tosen is by far one of my favorite captains, he is super underappreciated by the fan base and everyone thinks he's a jobber but he's strong enough to be the commander of the Espada let that sink in.
I actually find he is also one of the best black anime characters in any anime...many black anime characters are stereotypical in anime- Tousen not only looked really impressive but had none of those stereotypes.
To be fair, his powerscaling was really bad which probably led to him losing popularity. He lost to Zaraki who "lost" to shikai Ichigo. Then got saved from an attack that was nearly fatal while his bankai was active by Sajin who only used one arm to easily block it. Thats not how you build up a major antagonist.
I feel like it might be something like when she died the sword stayed because like kaname suzumuchi probably wanted justice for the death of it's master and this is why kaname was able to use his friends sword
Technically couldn't Aizen's shikai imitate Tousen's bankai ability. Aizen controls all the senses, he can decide what you see and hear, etc...couldn't he just make you see nothing, hear nothing, feel nothing? He should also be even able to imitate Shinji's shikai ability, since Aizen could just make you see things in reverse, hear in reverse, etc. I guess though it may be more troublesome for Aizen to flip things for an opponent. When you really think about it, Aizen has barely even used his shikai to its fullest potential. He uses it as simply as possible and yet it gets the job done. No wonder he told Shinji his ability is child's play...clearly although not stated, he has the strongest illusional (sensory manipulation) zanpaktou in the series.
Aizen apparently has to actually concentrate on what he's making people perceive though so trying to copy Shinji might be a bit of an annoyance. Basing that off of his interaction with Yhwach and his apparently not knowing he was seeing Ichigo in the illusion.
Kaname’s English voice actor was one of my favorites and the design of Suzumushi is probably my favorite Zanpakuto design. Edit- It may be a bit corny, but I always liked the idea that Kaname had such a close connection with his friend that he was able to use her Zanpakuto after she died since he didn’t already have a Zanpakuto himself.

I love when Tekking abridges Bleach scenes with his own sound effects, so funny but still somehow hype! “Cry Suzumushi....SHWWWWWWWWWEEEEEEEE” had me rolling in laughter
I find it worth noting that Suzumushi seems to be in the same class/family of Zanpakuto as Aizen's. Both's true power is manipulating an opponents senses, and both's weakness is the blade itself (grabbing either Zanpakuto cancels out their ability).

so i’ve been heavily thinking about this, what if zanpakuto *can* be transferred but only if special conditions are met, like compatible personalities, special bonds with the original host, or maybe if the host didn’t fully awaken their shikai and the sword is taken the blade can be a combination of the 2’s personality. tosen had 2 release commands for his shikai, each with fairly different abilities, the only other time we see this with zanpakuto is for anomalies. what if one is from his friend and the other is his own. it’d explain the difference in how each is used.
Betting the sword's ability (when the girl had it) was the blade storm thing, and after Kaname's soul merged into it it gained the sound ability and the darkness bankai.
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the same Zanpakuto can manifest different abilities based on the wielder. So the abilities Tosen could use were probably different to the abilities his friend had.
It is really difficult to understand how Kaname took his friend's zanpakuto, but the fact that it wasn't his own zanpakuto to begin with, must explain why his shikai's ability doens't relate to his bankai. The shikai is about vibration, while the bankai steal senses. Probably Kakyo achieved shikai before she died, and when Kaname got the sword, it already had a shikai, but the bankai was formed from Kaname's soul.
Tousen cemented himself as a badass in my eyes when he effortlessly cuts off Grimmjow’s arm. I was always secretly wishing he’d get his revenge for that, since he hates it when others look down on him.
People who are able to discern the "true nature" of things (or at least believe they can) as a result of being blind is a recurring theme in anime. Tosen is in good company with Fujitora and Virgo Shaka.
Seriously though, any area of effect attack would completely neg Tosen's Bankai. Picture this: Tosen: I have you now, Byakuya. Byakuya: Senbonzakura Kageyoshi. Tosen: Oh, the multiple sword thing. Right... crap...
Yip....his bankai is situational and best used stealthily like he did in Turn back the pendulum where he incapacitated some of the vizards quite quickly.
You’re just speculating though, because we don’t know the properties of Tosen’s Bankai, we also don’t know if breaking it is physically possible without breaking Tosen.
CFYOW makes Kaname such a tragic character and makes me love him even more even tho he was one of my least fav by the end of the manga. Crazy how much these novels did
I’m pretty sure kanames friend was murdered by a previous shinigami by the name of tokinada tsunayashiro and he’s also the head of one of the great noble clans, I think this is explained in the can’t fear your own world tie-in
Maybe Kaname's friend didn't awaken Suzumushi, it was just an Asauchi and she didn't had a release, or did she? That ring may be a decoration, like Urahara cane sword (Shikomizue).
So... how fucked would Tousen have been if Kenpachi had taken off his eyepatch during their fight? I am imagining it as basically Kenpachi just ripping open the bankai balloon space by taking it off let alone swinging his sword
I think when it comes to Suzumushi, it's similar to Zaraki. He picked up a random blade, but forced it's asauchi to protect itself from his immense spiritual pressure, and thus manifested. In Tousen's case though, I believe that both Tousen and the woman he got Suzumushi from had a super strong sense of justice, and so Tousen was able to resonate with that asauchi on such a level that they could work together as sould reaper and zanpakuto. Just my thoughts on how it could work.
Tosen's Zanpakuto is one of my favorites, it seems extremely versatile compared to most. Though I guess I have a weird soft spot for Zanpakutou that don't go through a crazy visual transformation and stay as normal swords, or aren't just basic offense types, and Suzumushi is neither of those.
Man, I really love the passion in your videos man! You get excited over the names just like I do! I've wanted to be a voice actor for years and one of the first animes to make me want to do this was bleach! Specifically Byakuya and his Senbonzakura Kageyoshi bankai. I thought the dudes voice and sword were so damn cool!!!
I can see how Tousen thought a Bankai was weak compared to Hollow powers. Tounsen with his bankai could only inflict minor wounds to Kenpachi. The Ryoka boy with only a shikai and a small sliver of hollow powers nearly killed Kenpachi in a instant. Turn back the pendulum Tousen had a hard time fighting Shinji with his partial hollow powers. Tousen wanting hollow powers made perfect sense.
About Kaname's friend and his zanpakutou, we get plenty more info about her on Can't Fear Your Own World. In a nutshell, her name is Kakyo, and Suzumushi Nishiki: Benihiko was her original ability (the sword's name was also Suzumushi). I presume that the link between her and Kaname was strong enough for Tousen to still use its original abilities. I strongly recommend you to read CFYOW, Tekking, it's really cool. You could even start a new Bleach Discussion series about it.
I think the idea of Suzumushi persisting from his friend's soul is really sad. Suzumushi watched him change from a good natured man into a monster, then had to suffer forced alteration by Aizen.
Maybe the zanpakuto was around kaname so much with his spiritual pressure, that suzumushi was like a fusion of their reiatsu. So even if kanames friend died, maybe his own reiatsu held the reiatsu of his friend in place and kept the form of the zanpakuto stable? Note that ive not finished the series yet but im trying.
Yeah, I was pretty disappointed with the direction Kubo took Tosen, the whole monster cricket thing didn't work. Not sure, what I would've done but I was thinking that Aizen would've done special modifications on him and Gin and it would be like Aizen makes him a special kind of Vizard where he has the option of ripping off his mask like an Arrancar which effectively would have him be transcendent in his own way and he has a renewed soul that allows him to create a new sword. Which would've been his sword, if he never took Suzumushi, with it's own Shikai and Bankai So Tosen would've had two separate blades due to the hogyoku
What do you think about a future series on Espadas after you're done with Captains? It would also have great timing because Bleach: Brave Souls is introducing new Beyond Ressurection forms for the Espada.

I believe they revealed some things about kaname's friend in CYOW her name was Kakyō and she was killed by a member of the Tsunayashiro clan one of the 4 noble clans Tokinada
My thoughts on this are maybe kaname and his friend did something very unusual and both of them put their souls in it, with kaname picking it up when it was left alone for whatever reason and he'd play with it and do what one would normally do and so when his friend died, only her soul part of it died... that's my guess anyway
Zaraki's sword was similar. He picked it up rather than receiving a brand-new Asauchi after becoming a Shinigami. Physical sword remained the same but it's no longer the Zanpakuto of the previous owner.
You can tell some stuff in Bleach was really inspired by Saint Seiya, i'd say Saint Seiya and Yu Yu Hakusho were the two biggest inspirations for Kubo creating Bleach.
In regards to sharing the same Zanpakutou...i would like to point out the Bleach movie focused on Toshiro(i cant remember the name) him and his friend both had Hyorinmaru.
You know, in the Bleach Brave Souls game. They released story missions of after the TYBW. Before Aizen was sealed up again he explained why he killed Tosen and explains he would have been so guilty he would of either died of guilt or killed himself. So he saves him from suffering and ends him right there as he viewed him as a loyal subject. Interesting stuff
My theory on Tosen’s zanpakuto is that he stole it before his friend’s soul was entirely imprinted on it. It had a unique form from her jinzen training, but wasn’t at the point of achieving Shikai yet so Tosen was able to take it. Sort of how Zaraki took a dead shinigami’s asauchi and made it his own, even though the asauchi already had a unique form, which ironically means Tosen and Zaraki both gained a zanpakuto through similar means

I find it worth noting that Suzumushi seems to be in the same class/family of Zanpakuto as Aizen's. Both's true power is manipulating an opponents senses, and both's weakness is the blade itself (grabbing either Zanpakuto cancels out their ability).

so i’ve been heavily thinking about this, what if zanpakuto *can* be transferred but only if special conditions are met, like compatible personalities, special bonds with the original host, or maybe if the host didn’t fully awaken their shikai and the sword is taken the blade can be a combination of the 2’s personality.
tosen had 2 release commands for his shikai, each with fairly different abilities, the only other time we see this with zanpakuto is for anomalies. what if one is from his friend and the other is his own. it’d explain the difference in how each is used.
Betting the sword's ability (when the girl had it) was the blade storm thing, and after Kaname's soul merged into it it gained the sound ability and the darkness bankai.
Exactly cos I'm pretty sure a Zanpakuto is supposed to be reflective of the wielder
I'm pretty sure I read somewhere that the same Zanpakuto can manifest different abilities based on the wielder. So the abilities Tosen could use were probably different to the abilities his friend had.
It is really difficult to understand how Kaname took his friend's zanpakuto, but the fact that it wasn't his own zanpakuto to begin with, must explain why his shikai's ability doens't relate to his bankai. The shikai is about vibration, while the bankai steal senses. Probably Kakyo achieved shikai before she died, and when Kaname got the sword, it already had a shikai, but the bankai was formed from Kaname's soul.
Tousen cemented himself as a badass in my eyes when he effortlessly cuts off Grimmjow’s arm. I was always secretly wishing he’d get his revenge for that, since he hates it when others look down on him.
People who are able to discern the "true nature" of things (or at least believe they can) as a result of being blind is a recurring theme in anime. Tosen is in good company with Fujitora and Virgo Shaka.
Seriously though, any area of effect attack would completely neg Tosen's Bankai. Picture this:
Tosen: I have you now, Byakuya.
Byakuya: Senbonzakura Kageyoshi.
Tosen: Oh, the multiple sword thing. Right... crap...
Yip....his bankai is situational and best used stealthily like he did in Turn back the pendulum where he incapacitated some of the vizards quite quickly.
You’re just speculating though, because we don’t know the properties of Tosen’s Bankai, we also don’t know if breaking it is physically possible without breaking Tosen.
CFYOW makes Kaname such a tragic character and makes me love him even more even tho he was one of my least fav by the end of the manga. Crazy how much these novels did

I’m pretty sure kanames friend was murdered by a previous shinigami by the name of tokinada tsunayashiro and he’s also the head of one of the great noble clans, I think this is explained in the can’t fear your own world tie-in
Maybe Kaname's friend didn't awaken Suzumushi, it was just an Asauchi and she didn't had a release, or did she?

So... how fucked would Tousen have been if Kenpachi had taken off his eyepatch during their fight? I am imagining it as basically Kenpachi just ripping open the bankai balloon space by taking it off let alone swinging his sword
My theory is that because Tousen got his sword from his deceased friend. That Benihiko or The cry is from the friend. Idk which one had which ability
I think when it comes to Suzumushi, it's similar to Zaraki. He picked up a random blade, but forced it's asauchi to protect itself from his immense spiritual pressure, and thus manifested. In Tousen's case though, I believe that both Tousen and the woman he got Suzumushi from had a super strong sense of justice, and so Tousen was able to resonate with that asauchi on such a level that they could work together as sould reaper and zanpakuto. Just my thoughts on how it could work.
Tosen's Zanpakuto is one of my favorites, it seems extremely versatile compared to most. Though I guess I have a weird soft spot for Zanpakutou that don't go through a crazy visual transformation and stay as normal swords, or aren't just basic offense types, and Suzumushi is neither of those.
Man, I really love the passion in your videos man! You get excited over the names just like I do! I've wanted to be a voice actor for years and one of the first animes to make me want to do this was bleach! Specifically Byakuya and his Senbonzakura Kageyoshi bankai. I thought the dudes voice and sword were so damn cool!!!
I can see how Tousen thought a Bankai was weak compared to Hollow powers.
Tounsen with his bankai could only inflict minor wounds to Kenpachi.
The Ryoka boy with only a shikai and a small sliver of hollow powers nearly killed Kenpachi in a instant.
Turn back the pendulum Tousen had a hard time fighting Shinji with his partial hollow powers.
Tousen wanting hollow powers made perfect sense.

About Kaname's friend and his zanpakutou, we get plenty more info about her on Can't Fear Your Own World. In a nutshell, her name is Kakyo, and Suzumushi Nishiki: Benihiko was her original ability (the sword's name was also Suzumushi). I presume that the link between her and Kaname was strong enough for Tousen to still use its original abilities. I strongly recommend you to read CFYOW, Tekking, it's really cool. You could even start a new Bleach Discussion series about it.
I think the idea of Suzumushi persisting from his friend's soul is really sad. Suzumushi watched him change from a good natured man into a monster, then had to suffer forced alteration by Aizen.
Maybe the zanpakuto was around kaname so much with his spiritual pressure, that suzumushi was like a fusion of their reiatsu. So even if kanames friend died, maybe his own reiatsu held the reiatsu of his friend in place and kept the form of the zanpakuto stable? Note that ive not finished the series yet but im trying.

Yeah, I was pretty disappointed with the direction Kubo took Tosen, the whole monster cricket thing didn't work.
Not sure, what I would've done but I was thinking that Aizen would've done special modifications on him and Gin and it would be like Aizen makes him a special kind of Vizard where he has the option of ripping off his mask like an Arrancar which effectively would have him be transcendent in his own way and he has a renewed soul that allows him to create a new sword.
Which would've been his sword, if he never took Suzumushi, with it's own Shikai and Bankai
So Tosen would've had two separate blades due to the hogyoku

I believe they revealed some things about kaname's friend in CYOW her name was Kakyō and she was killed by a member of the Tsunayashiro clan one of the 4 noble clans Tokinada
She was killed by her husband when he got in an argument with another soul reaper and she tried to stop him.
My thoughts on this are maybe kaname and his friend did something very unusual and both of them put their souls in it, with kaname picking it up when it was left alone for whatever reason and he'd play with it and do what one would normally do and so when his friend died, only her soul part of it died... that's my guess anyway

The thing with Kaname's Bankai is that you're able to see and hear when you touch the blade. Kenpachi noticed this when he was being struck by it.

Zaraki's sword was similar. He picked it up rather than receiving a brand-new Asauchi after becoming a Shinigami. Physical sword remained the same but it's no longer the Zanpakuto of the previous owner.

You can tell some stuff in Bleach was really inspired by Saint Seiya, i'd say Saint Seiya and Yu Yu Hakusho were the two biggest inspirations for Kubo creating Bleach.

In regards to sharing the same Zanpakutou...i would like to point out the Bleach movie focused on Toshiro(i cant remember the name) him and his friend both had Hyorinmaru.

You know, in the Bleach Brave Souls game. They released story missions of after the TYBW. Before Aizen was sealed up again he explained why he killed Tosen and explains he would have been so guilty he would of either died of guilt or killed himself. So he saves him from suffering and ends him right there as he viewed him as a loyal subject. Interesting stuff

My theory on Tosen’s zanpakuto is that he stole it before his friend’s soul was entirely imprinted on it. It had a unique form from her jinzen training, but wasn’t at the point of achieving Shikai yet so Tosen was able to take it. Sort of how Zaraki took a dead shinigami’s asauchi and made it his own, even though the asauchi already had a unique form, which ironically means Tosen and Zaraki both gained a zanpakuto through similar means
Kenpachi's Zanpakuto wasn't his originally. Tousen wasn't the only one.
