  • Pastor Blaine continues in Matthew 1 showing how Joseph obeyed God even in an honor/shame culture because of who Jesus is.
    Matthew 1:18-25
Now the birth of Jesus Christ took place in this way. When his mother Mary had been betrothed to Joseph, before they came together she was found to be with child from the Holy Spirit. And her husband Joseph, being a just man and unwilling to put her to shame, resolved to divorce her quietly. But as he considered these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not fear to take Mary as your wife, for that which is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. She will bear a son, and you shall call his name Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had spoken by the prophet:
“Behold, the virgin shall conceive and bear a son,
and they shall call his name Immanuel”
(which means, God with us). When Joseph woke from sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord commanded him: he took his wife, but knew her not until she had given birth to a son. And he called his name Jesus.
    Sermon Notes:
Main Point: Christ appreciated results in costly obedience.
    I. Joseph's Problem - The shame of an unexpected pregnancy.
II. Joseph's Revelation - The person and work of Jesus
III. Joseph's Response - Obedience to the call of God
    Other References:
    Isaiah 7
    Romans 5:12-21
Jesus' divinity is a First Order issue. If Jesus was not divine, if He was not God Himself, then we are all doomed to Adam's condemnation. But He WAS God Himself, so we have the gift of salvation!
The greater measure of appreciation for Christ correlates to the measure of cost you're wiling to take on for the sake of Christ.
"Don't get caught up in the worldly rhythms of Christmas and miss appreciating what this season is truly supposed to be about--the person and work of Jesus Christ. Pause and take a moment to enjoy the Christ, God incarnate, who came to save us from our sins. And the fruit of our appreciation leads us to costly obedience."
