Personally i think the best starting skills are Adventure for the free waterskin and if your going to use a sword. Get Weaponsmithing instead of Swordplay. Since you get the Gladius Sword which is great, and you'll level up your Swordplay very quickly.
Fishmen Villages are usually very easy for great loot, coats and spears. But i got very unlucky and a haunted scarecrow thing appeared during the night.

You almost don't need waterskin if you are not on desert and then, after first good hunt and get leather you can order it from leathermaker.

Good idea, i would recommend always picking a starting town with a Hunter or Inn so you can guarantee a hunt.
