There are two types of brasscraft quarter-turn valves. The one shown here is the normal department store (home depot, etc...) variety with a plastic interior and plastic handle. The other brasscraft quarter-turn valve has a metal ball-valve and metal handle. They are slightly more expensive and harder to find. Just FYI.
Do you happen to know the part number of the brasscraft quarter turn valve with the metal ball-valve and handle? Thanks.

It is NOT recommended to leave the old nut and ferrule in place because manufacturers have different threads and you will be in for a surprise! NO TEFLON EITHER!
That is why this is not a general “How-To” video and is simply my method for how I do it and have found that it works very well and holds up. In cases that I’ve come across where the threads didn’t match, I was forced to remove the ferrule and swap it all. All of that is just not necessary in every case in my opinion. 💯🛠️
You were joking right? You replace the old nut and brass ring? Wasn't that the reason you did the job, was to replace all the old fittings. But you leave a nasty old nut with the compression ring seated for a separate valve.
I have a home Improvement business, and now I see why people ask me you going to replace the whole fitting. lol I couldn't understand why they ask that. Now I get it

Looks good. There is a tool used to remove the nut and the ferrule. Once removed you can replace the escutcheon plate (circular chrome plated ring aka CT’s). Having done plumbing for many years, the Brass craft brand of 1/4 turn ball shut offs are not as good as they use to be. In about the last eight years or so they have cut back on their quality. Having said that, you may discover that the valve you just replace may not last. Brass Craft use to make the ball valve with a chrome plated brass ball. Now you’ll find that they are made of a cheap gray plastic. Many nonprofessional would not know this. Water damage can be very aggravating and expensive. @@Methnerjacob I use to buy the Kenny Brand sold at Lowe’s for years. It was made in China. Recently Lowe’s has changed venders from Kenny to SharkBite, another made in China brand. It feels and looks cheaper. I ended up looking around at server also other Lowe’s to find the discontinued Kenny brand angle valves in the mark down end caps. I found about 27 of them and bought them at a discounted price. That should last me for a couple of years. After I run out I’ll have to look at another brands. It’s hard to beat a good quality discontinued valve at $5.39 each.
@@Methnerjacob wolverine brass. The best there is.
Had too many water leak on different areas. Use best quality products and make sure someone is well qualified to do it. No plumber is the same. Last one we hired did poor job on replace show spout and it leaked to downstairs unit, we have to deal with drywall damage etc.
I also enjoyed your pivot mirrors in the bathroom, so it gave me ideas for my vanity which has the original large wall-to-wall mirror. Thank you for sharing.

Folks let me give you some advice. As a 20 year plumber. The only reason the threads are the same is because the brand “brass craft” kept the same thread pattern. They are NOT all the same. Compression angle stops blow off easily if you don’t know what you’re doing and will cause thousands in damage. Most of the time you need a ferrule puller as well. You do NOT use any Teflon at all. It can cause leaks. The point of seal is the compression of the ferrule. Multi turn stops are actually much better. Rebuildable and reliable. Call a real plumber. You may pay 50$ more but it will be done by a pro with insurance.
Lol. I’ve literally never had an issue with the threads not being the same. Weird. Also, I’ve NEVER had a stop “blow off” whatsoever causing any damage at all. I do have insurance. I’ve never had to use it. Pulled plenty of Ferrells without a special tool. Finding the proper rebuild kit for a hard to know brand multi turn valve is near impossible. Never had luck with that. Many handymen are real plumbers. The first time I sweated pipe was when I was 12.
@@thehandymanlife that doesn’t make you a plumber. And I guarantee I’ve replaced more anglestops this month than you have in 5 years. The threads are not all the same. If you were a plumber you’d know that. And you may have some little liability coverage but if you flood a house and cause 150k in damage will it be covered? No because you’re a handyman without a plumbing license. Then your customers homeowners insurance would have to cover it with them suing you and your insurance company. Vicious cycle. Easily avoided using a real plumber.
Look man, I’m sure you’re a great plumber. I’m not here to argue about anglestops. I consider myself a very competent plumber and so do my clients. My insurance policy covers plenty for the multi-million dollar homes I work on. You need to quit putting every “handyman” into your own personal false category. My work is quality. Period. License or not. Stop being butthurt that people don’t mind hiring a handyman for plumbing work and just focus on your own stuff. You’ll do better that way. If you have more insight into the topic of my video, then maybe it’s time to go make your own video? I am confident that my video based on what I’ve learned has helped many. Thanks so much for your input.
The teflon on the threads does not affect the seal, at the same time I guess it wouldn't hurt, it might just keep the threads from gawling. However there shouldn't be any sealant added to the ferrule (compression ring). That is a metal to metal seal only.
This is true. It’s mostly anti-seize with some sealant qualities.
Wow, you made it look easy. I've been working on mine for 2 solid days. When I turned off the water to the house, the shut-off valve continued to drip water for hours. Also getting the lower and upper nut off the supply hose took a full day and at least six different tools due to the difficult access.
They get easier the more you do! I definitely didn’t do a video on my first one. Hope you got it in the end!
@@thehandymanlife Water is still dripping from the old shut-off valve after 2 days of turning the house water off. So far I have collected about 5 gallons of water. I'm wondering if it's ever going to stop. And there's only room for a smallish container under it, which I have to empty into a bigger jug every couple of hours otherwise it overflows. I'm not sure what will happen if I remove the valve before it stops dripping.
To much work unless the valve is broke. Can you swap out quarter valve from the gate with a copper line keeping the copper line going to say the sink valves . Or do you have to change out the copper lines to the flex lines? I got a leaky drippy tub faucet in the condo laundry room. That I may use onec a week. I would have to move the washing machine to redo the whole thing. So I was thinking just go with quarter turns and shut and the water off that way. The gat e valves wont g the w a ter off 30 years old Instead of a 4 hour job.

It isn't!
I've seen lots of people talking about the quarter turn valves being so much better. In our house all the sinks have quarter turn valves and they're all stuck solid! The toilets all have the older multi-turn valves and they turn just fine.
Mine lasted 17 years brass craft multi turn, 3 of 5 shutoff valve in my toilet, 2005 built, are all defective, won't shutoff completely. I will replace all of them with 1/4 turn brasscraft on sale 5 for 20 bucks HD today.
That will leak soon, you should have put the new nut and compression ring on that came with the new valve. Never use and goop or tape on a compression fitting
You’re sure? This video is from over a year ago.... no issues. I’ve actually never had an issue with this method ever. Why else would I make a video promoting it? Do it your way though if it makes you more comfortable. No worries.
How did you remove the old mirror? Did you break it up into pieces or were you able to take it down in one piece? I have one that is 6 feet long, and I'm terrified about trying to take it down.
I used a long piece of flat metal to go in at the top and pry carefully. A better option might be one of those long thin saw blades that they use for spray foam trimming. Slide it down the back of the mirror and saw through the glue dollops. Good luck with your project!

Thank you for taking the time to make this excellent video. Regarding the tightening of the nut between the angle stop valve and the copper line. Should that be a half or three fourths turn after the nut is hand snug tight.
Do you have plans to do anything with your Vanity sinks?
Yes! Going to get a pre-fab counter top with new sinks in the near future! Then comes the shower project!

They sell a tool called a ferrel remover... and it makes it super easy if you’re needing to do the whole thing.
@@thehandymanlife How do you know if you need to replace the ferrule? I have seen the "sleeve puller" tool but if I am just replacing a leaky older valve with a newer 1/4 angle valve do I need to even replace the nut and ferrule?
I have replaced many many valves without replacing the nut and ferrule. I also always use the Teflon paste over the tape.

Prelude was supposed to be a quicker flip for funds for the 240. Then it turned into a RUclips deal. Need to get back at it… a RUclips channel is a full time job from the start but pays nothing until it’s built. Lol.
1/4 turns are great, until they begin to leak. Unlike nulti-turn valves, there is no repair kit, so you will have to replace the entire valve.
They aren't repairable if you have very hard water like I have. The lime scale coats everything rendering them useless.
Oh it's up dated one I thought my plumber put a cheaper one on so it's an upgrade
Is that a compression valve? Anyone know the difference between sharkbite and compression?
Yes this one is a compression valve. It crushes a washer in between the pipe and the fitting to create a leakproof seal. Shark bites work a little differently. Maybe I could do a video on the difference!
sharkbite is a push fit brand not a type of stop valve mechanism per se. compression valve has washers that round handle spins into seat to stop flow the 1/4 turn ball valve only turns 45 degrees moving a ball that turns to opening for flow and away from to close (i am learning lol) I am replacing old faucet set and water supply valves. Seems that both types need to be moved couple times yr? to avoid getting stuck. 1/4 turns cannot be rebuilt and have water hammer issues
Yes shark bite is a brand but because they are a beginning well marketed innovator for push fit applications, they kinda get the front row seat for name descriptions. I would recommend toggling both kinds of valves a couple times a year to keep them in good shape yes. Good call. I’m not sure about water hammer issues.

How much is that little valve?
They Average about $10 separately but you can buy contractor bulk packs of (5) and more for a better deal!

Your wrong, not all pre-existing angle stops have the same thread pitch ,you did not explain sometimes a compression ferrell puller will be required
People just love being told they’re wrong. Sorry if I’ve never had an issue with a different thread pitch. Smooth sailing over here. Obviously I’ve removed plenty of bad Ferrells in the occasional situation. I didn’t need a special puller. Sandpaper and some skillful nudging with a plier is fine. Less than 2/10 need anything other than what I put in this video. Thank you for your input.

I cant believe the main shut off is outside?
My house built 2005 have one outside underground like sprinkler cover and one in the garage, wall box for house and fire sprinkler valve.
Yep Arizona is built a little different. My shut off in my Wisconsin home is inside. But the city has one outside too. Here in AZ, the main house one is outside on the side and the city has one in a box out front too.
Mine is outside alongside the sidewalk and underground with an access cover. And you need a special T-shaped tool to turn it.
I did not watch it because of that unnecessary music. Please don't get upset. Music is not needed on instructional video. If I want to listen to music, I will listen to music.

ya spent more time talkin about decor ,, than the fix,,, 1/4 turn valves SUCK!!!!!!,,,,,they are made poorly ,,, ive replaced them with the multiturn valves ,they will leak,, ol school is better no issues ,,, 6 months to 1 yr it will be hard to turn or maybe you have good water there,,, alright job tho!!!!!

Yeah I have a quarter turn tap in the laundry it’s failed today after a year and looks like it can’t be repaired with a new washer so whole new tap!
