I have been looking into going into respiratory therapist for college for about a month now and I'm nervous of whether or not this will be a good fit for me. I've always been family oriented so I like to spend a moderate amount of time at home with my family. I have a 2 year old son and I would really appreciate it if you could give me your opinion on it, is it a good job for someone with children? I noticed in your video you were on night shift is that something that alternates? For instance how often are you on day shift vs night shift. Do you regularly work 12 hour shifts?
Does all RTs works graveyards or is your choice? I know they work 12 hours shifts most of times so you will be off about 5am ...is that correct? thanks
Hi, I'm also a night shift RT and it's weirdly refreshing to see others in my position! We aren't talked about enough so it's great you're showing the world what we do! I'm also trying to go PA (in a BSRT program now) and looking forward to seeing what your journey is like!
Hi. I'm a new subscriber! I'm a hospitalist PA in Washington, D.C. It's an LTAC unit w/an ICU and SNF/nursing home units. I rely VERY heavily on the RTs in our hospital! I was SO intimidated by the mechanical ventilators when I first started (so many settings)!😨 I had come from working in out-patient settings for several years. It was the RT s who helped me understand the vents and trach types/sizes! You guys ROCK! I wish you the best of success in your positive endeavors! I think your RT experience will make you a STELLAR PA student and eventual PA ! You're gonna accomplish great things in this field! 👩🏼⚕️👏🏾 I look forward to watching more of your videos! Bye! 😃👋🏾👨🏾⚕️

That’s awesome! One of my old coworkers was a unit secretary then later became an RT in that very unit, she knew so much about how the unit ran & where things were, the people and it really helped her:)
Hello there, I've been doing warehouse work for the past 13 years, I was miserable there. I got covid and was off work for a while, I tried going back to work and I was terminated. It was a good job but I was miserable so now I'm looking for something different. My brother told me about this RT program, it's 20 months but close to 50k dollars . I dont have any experience in the medical field and I'm not too sure about getting involved with a huge loan like that. Thank you
@@Enthios3 I thought so. I'm scheduled to start there in July. I think it's worth it. If you go for a community college, it's gonna cost you just as much if not more because of all the time you waste with waiting lists and prereqs. That's why I'm doing it. I'm also alumni
I have a question about respiratory therapy. Can you choose to work 4 days a week at 12 hour shifts like nurses can? Love your videos! Thank you for the information!
It depends on your place of work. Most places have full time as 3 12 hr shifts (36hr per week) and others go 2 12s and 2 8s. (40hrs per week). But I know at my place of work I made sure to ask if there was opportunity to pick up extra shift and there were! I was always to do more than my originally scheduled hours! If your place of work doesn’t have then you can get a second prn job elsewhere
This may be too personal of a question, but with an rrt job how do you not have enough income to live in a home vs an apartment? I ask this as a mommy of 2 possibly starting rrt school this fall and I am difficulty finding people discussung their income wheras in nursing everyone tells you! I was in a nursing program last year but covid and lack of connect brought me to rrt (:
Hi!! So you definitely make enough to own a home. No question about that! I personally lived in an apartment because I knew I was going back to school and moving for that and was going to be back on loans again so a house didn’t make sense for me! Plenty of my coworkers owned a home:) if you DM me on Instagram I’d be happy to share my hourly rate as it’s important when figuring out your future!
Hello mam !! I' from India, did my 4 yrs bachelor program in Critical Care Technology. I want to do job as a RT, but can I do that job being a critical care technologist ? If yes then how many yrs of experiences is needed to do job in canada ? Or if No,then which course should I do after this bachelor programme ? Is there any Exam or coure to do job as RT in canada after doing a BSc degree in another course ? Please reply mam, thank you 😍💖
It’s more science based but you do have to complete some mid-level math as a requirement for the program but RT stuff only has basic math for equation so basically algebra
As a prospective student, I'm afraid that having a small body frame (as well as being physically weak) will affect my abilities to be a great respiratory therapist. What's your opinion?
Not at all. I am 5’4 and I do not work out lol so I am not strong. The only think you’ll have to do by yourself is push equipment which has wheels and handles. When you’re mobilizing a patient that you can’t do by yourself you ask for help! As simple as that:) you will also learn techniques during hospital orientation on how to properly move patients without hurting yourself etc.
hi! i use hearing aid on one ear and have no idea how i’ll be able to use a stethoscope so i’m wondering if i can still pursue being a respiratory therapist?
Do you think someone can work full time while attending Respiratory school. That’s my dilemma right now. I’m done with my prereqs but i can’t afford not working fulltime. What’s your opinion on it?
I’m in my first year of RT school and so far I think it’s very possible. If you didn’t do your pre reqs it would be a big NO. But I also did my pre reqs before the program and I can work full time, but I do spend a lot of late nights studying and catching up on sleep on Sundays just to do homework for the rest of the day. Your life will definitely be consumed by work and this program for the 2-4 years. So it totally depends on your commitment to it 😊
I worked about 20 hrs a week while in RT school, but I did not need to financially support myself. I had classmates that needed to support themselves & their fam and worked full time (12 hr shifts on the weekends or a few evening shifts a week). Just be sure to give yourself time to study! If you have a job you can work prn I recommend that so that you can pick up more if it’s a lighter school week, but if it gets busy you can just to the minimum hrs!
It was not mandatory at my high school! I never took it. I do not think most high schools require it, it is usually an upper level class or “honors” class you can take if you want
I adopted her so we are not 100% sure. We were told she’s a shepherd mix... but I agree that she is a German shepherd bc of the coloring, but also has fur like a golden retriever!! Glad someone else agrees with my guess of her mix too🤗
Long story short... I wanted more responsibility over my patients, I felt limited as an RT. The RT field also wasn’t flexible in the type of work I could do/schedule (I would’ve been working holidays and weekends always).
Sam. I've been seriously considering becoming a RT. I live in Ontario Canada. The part I dislike is how bleak the job outlook is. That alone is discouraging. Also so many of the jobs you get hired for are temporary positions so you don't keep the jobs long enough to receive maximum pay which is unfortunate
Yes really. Becoming a Registered Nurse is a better choice in the long run than becoming a Respiratory Therapist and has always been the better choice between the two. Just my opinion though
Thank you so much!! And I wouldn't say "lots" lol, but you definitely see blood (in sputum, other injuries if you work in the ER, etc.) I would say you see wayyyy more sputum lol
Yes plenty of people do! I would say the majority of my coworkers either have been career RTs or respiratory was their second career in life and that’s their career for the rest of their life! It’s a great job for a career, not just a stepping stone:)
