it mostly depends on the player whether they want to stick to it or not
but for me personally i think not, since you can still complete something hard without having that high rarity units. just bc there are a lot of high rarity units that can help a lot doesnt mean that you need them most of the time to complete some stages or challenges

Another reason I feel gacha has a bad reputation that you didn't really touch on (and this is applicable to most mobile games) is the advertising. Mobile game advertising is so bad that there is an entire culture making fun of it, which trickles down to an inevitable dislike of the mobile games themselves. Triple A games actually have decent advertising which brought in many people despite the games being terrible, indirectly feeding company greed by misleading their potential buyers.

Gacha games share the same game mechanics, it's actually quite superficial, boring and repetitive. Also, the not very strong variability of the gameplay is worsened by the inaccessibility of a wide pool of characters and the impossibility of pumping them. And what's left, the design of models and animations of skills, now they can be quite beautiful, especially with Chinese developers, but still it quickly becomes boring because you have several characters and you look at a dozen animations 1000 times. The plot, on the other hand, is often filled with heavily overloaded dialogues that in fact make little real sense and the plot itself is often banal. And after all this, all we have left is the joy of account progress and new characters, both of which are blocked by paywall and long term grind.

In my experiences with gacha games...
-Yostar and Cygame is a really good one out there in my opinion. They really know how to do things... (Cygame also have the age restriction for spending as an option too...)
-Mihoyo is okay but what I don't like about Mihoyo's games is you have to draw 2 gacha banners on the same period to get the best out of it. In Honkai3rd you need character, weapon and stigmas. Genshin is character and weapon...also lots of time to grind artifacts.
-FGO is not recommend by me as well. I'd played when its first coming out in Jp and the rate is really abysmal. When I'm out of it I had last rolls over 300 rolls which I had saved about 6 months.... got only 2 five-star CE and no five-star servant. (In that time there is no draw ceiling as well) So I quit. In Genshin's case. The weapon banner isn't really a priority (that banner is targeted mainly for dolphin's, whale's, and leviathan's) since you can get away with just using either the craftable weapons or the free weapons given from events.

Honestly after playing gacha for a long time, I find that the actual gacha itself just cumbersome cause I eventually need to grind for that character. I think a lot of non-gacha player only see the gacha part and somehow thinks it's unfair, p2w, etc when in actuality a lot of the time you kinda didn't need that 5 star or SSR unit if you actually trying to work with the free unit that you have. I mean yea it's preadatory for certain group (especially if there's no pity), but a lot of the time the gacha part is optional. Rn on HSR, I have like 18K stellar jade and only pull once on Kafka + her LC banner and I honestly still have a fun experience. It also forces me to be creative when building my character and team with the limited roster that I have, plus it also don't really put pressure on me to grind daily mission cause I honestly don't care about the stellar jade anymore.
TL;DR: A lot of the time the gacha component is optional and if the game is good you're probably gonna have a good experience without it anyway

Gacha games are incredibly hit or miss. Most of the time, they're *miss*
Especially with unholy red flags like VIP tier benefits, global shafting, the game being a shameless copy of another game (mostly AFK Arena), and so on. And of course, there's many games that make it so that only the highest rarity units/heroes are usable while all the lower rarity ones are useless. I'm looking at you, Revived Witch.
Not every game needs to be super generous with things like hero selects and so on. GrandChase has to rely on powercreep via growth systems because there's only 40 heroes and that gacha game releases new heroes VERY slowly.

  • @GDrakoTurnover

I think the best point you made about the fun of gacha games is having a roster completely unique to you. Not everyone has the same box of heroes and that lets players tackle the game in their own way based on what they have. Arknights is one of those games that surprisingly benefit from this for being a gacha.
Honestly, I think there should be more awareness about the side effects of gachas, especially newer less-experienced players could throw themselves down the "gacha trap." In the end, people are paying for virtual items that they are not even guaranteed to receive. Thus its like gambling but little benefit
Hmm, I do agree FGO may not be great as a first gacha but shouldnt SW also fit in the same boat? Plus its got PvP. Maybe during a time when gacha was just collecting cool monsters its a great game, but these days with such a big gap between new and old players (some old players Ive heard still dont have a L&D Nat 5), I'm also not sure its a great choice for new players compared to more recent games

Gacha is basically virtual gambling. And some of these games are not monitored or regulated by any laws. It's actually still legal for an underage player to spend real money on gatcha and getting hyped over something with a random chance of getting, just like slot machines.
Then one will question, what about Mortal Kombat games? Ain't that too gory and should be regulated. Yes, that's what ERSB ratings are there for, the rest is parents responsibility. Gacha on the other hand is directly involving your money, or your parents money. Gacha for cosmetics reasons are fine imo, but when gacha gives you a game changer, some non-gacha games like FiFa games, Diablo Immortal will tend to incorporate these mechanics into their game. You already spent 60 bucks for a "full game", and now you are forced to pay more than the actual game price to pull for something you are supposed to get for free in game. Where does all these comes from? Gacha games.
I am still actively playing some Gacha games like Genshin Impact and Dead or Alive Xtreme Venus Vacation (don't judge!). But I am glad to say I have not spent a single cent real money on gacha, yet. Those cosmetics, characters all are eventually obtainable through grind and proper planning.

SUPER MONSTER LEAGUE! OMG MY NOSTALGIA! I played that game years back and I miss it to this day, the only downside was the constant need to auto farm for nearly the entire day if you want to capture enough of the event monsters to Evo.3 them, or to get enough materials to Super Evolve specific monsters. I'd love to re-visit it again, it was my first ever gacha game and it holds a special place in my heart.
My other problem is time managing those games. Arknights can be auto-ed, but if new event stages are out I have to make time when I'll clear those stages. Genshin is 100% manual play and has even more events for me to juggle with, worst ones for me are ones with a certain requirement that I have not cleared/explored in the game. Which I have a love/hate relationship with how it's handled for new, casual and busy players, but hey what can ya do.

The thing with gacha games problems are how it's eventually bleeds into influencing the business practice of even AAA games models and subsequently ruins the way these supposedly non-gacha games being tacked with even more microtransactions
The way gacha games could reap obscene amount of profits with way less effort than most traditional full-priced games have granting new layers of stigma on top of already clear nature of gacha system being actual gambling in digital format
It's really grant bad influences honestly and I'm both not surprised yet disappointed that there's still no tight regulations of it's systems even with CCP's already existing concerns with how gacha games' FOMO are weaponised at worse rates than full-priced video games sequels and pre-orders
Also the typical outrage- flaunting "old guard" videogame journalists like JIm Sterling are such hypocrites for not throwing more shades on gacha games despite it's embodying the worst elements of the things that these peopel hated the most (on top of how most female anime characters are pretty much objectifying by nature in their eyes), probably people like her are afraid to be "cancelled" by already growing huge gacha game fandoms, especially from how ravenous Genshin Impact fans can be at even attacking their VAs to the point that Mihoyo's CEO only views Genshin Fandom as cashcows for their better projects

The issue with the "upsides" is that they're created artificially by introducing scarcity. You can have ALL OF THOSE UPSIDES while still having player-friendly and good design. Gachas and lootbox mechanics are just poor excuses for them. They are predatory mechanics for greedy developers and cause the games to be filled with anti-fun design, making the games even more tedious and restricting than normal games.

My take on the whole lootbox and gacha thing.
As long as the gacha/lootbox system doesn't gives you a very huge advantage or absolutely necessary to progress, it's fine.
Like FGO, Azur Lane, GFL, Arknights. Not being able to pull the characters you want don't necessarily gate you from any progress. Would it be a bit harder? No doubt. But the content can still be done. Just requires more brainpower and patience.
I feel games with PvP are the biggest perpetrators of bad gacha. Although not always the case. I played a Marvel gacha game, Marvel Puzzle Quest, daily for almost a year back in 2014. It had PvP, but outside of two instances where they truely fucked up (The release of Sentry and when they reworked X-Force Wolverine), the PvP experience wasn't that bad.
Especially not too long after I started when they buffed the PvP drop table to include extra free pulls and more covers to upgrade 2 star characters (Game has 1-4 stars. With 4 stars being what you could call the UR/SSR Tier). So you could easily and quickly build up that roster and get better and better rankings in your bracket to get more copies of the 3 star (SR) character that was a reward and upgrade them more.

PvP I feel like should belong nowhere where you can spend money to get an advantage. Especially when they make it important for getting the gacha resource like in BA and Artery gear fusion. Azur Lane also has pvp, but its honestly kinda shit with shit rewards, I say this having played the game for 2 and a half years. I really appreciate how Arknights and a couple others don't have pvp.

I don't hate gacha games, and I don't have any problem with adults playing and spending money on them. What I do have a problem with is that children under the legal age to gamble have access to them. If children can play gacha games, then they should also be legally able to enter a casino and drink like adults who can legally gamble and drink. Basically, I am saying that children should not have any access to gatch games until they are 18 to 21. This is my personal opinion, and no one has to agree with it, but not enough people are talking about this. Gacha and loot boxes probably should be illegal, but in the United States, it probably never will be. We have state sponsored gambling with the lottery, so gambling here is probably not going anywhere.

The one gacha game that I would always recommend would be Guardian Tales. The most unique thing about it is the story. You don't read through the story, you live through the story. The gacha is really generous since it has 300 pulls pity and gives at least 1 ten pulls every week if you play the game regularly. And during certain events, they gives out free 100 pulls, 50 pulls, etc.

Plus, getting MLB heros with MLB Ex weapons is not hard after a while as a f2p. If you do full clear in story and manage your inventory well, the stat bonus from collection gonna help so much that you won't fall under plat tier. Don't expect to beat out everyone without having a single MLB max evol hero because you are just a beginner at that point. Just take it easy on the arena and enjoy the story cause clearing the story is the fastest way to get stronger and get more gem.

One thing I've enjoyed about gacha systems that I feel has been showing up less in games is meaningful unlocks. I'm much more of a fan of older Legend of Zelda games because even if the items were only useful for about 5% of the game it felt like I had actually added a tool to my belt rather than just another stick with a bunch of numbers tied to it. I only really play Genshin and Star Rail and while they do have those rpg elements with artifacts and such, the core of it all is still the characters skills/abilities and the actual character/story that makes getting new characters feel incredibly more engaging and rewarding to me.
For instance, I ended up dropping Destiny 2 (before it REALLY started to go south) because grinding light level feels like a boring chore rather than real progression because 90% of the loot in Destiny is generic fodder that you use because you have to rather than you want to. They also weren't releasing content I cared to pay for. Witch queen was pretty good, but that raid? Memorizing symbols...again?
FYI: Still a F2P Genshin and HSR

Aside of the predatory methods of lootboxes, and the awful rates of certain games, those games are on the majority of the times oriented to be f2p; as shown by this madlad, you don't really need gatcha units to complete the game; so either you pay to get what you want so badly (Given pity system), outfits, or just to say thanks to devs for such a wonderful game
As said in the video, Sanity / Stamina / Resin or whichever refill resource system out there has another effect: To always have it on cooldown, refilling itself
Kingsense... Ah, how I miss K & Ekyo (Yandere Hayamin + with a shield)
Overall great video... You should slowly return to Honkai, cause if you felt impresses by Stygian video, you could even stream your impressions on the following chapters (Like "Thunders over Nagazora")
A final shotout to a game must be FF Dissidia Opera Omnia: Has a high spike of difficulty, yet can be enjoyed on whichever level you want (And there's even a "CC" every few months too), it's fully PvE (Has co-op) and the gatcha rates are generous to even be able to win high rarity stuff with just free currency (Pity system & steady income of resources included)

I play a lot of Girls Frontline and Azur Lane and I believe I can speak to them well. I've played both for more than 3 years at this point.
Girls Frontline has great waifus, a story that makes Arknights Chapter 8 seem cheerful, and the most punishingly difficult combat in any gacha game by a long shot. It's main theme is anthropomorphized guns and it's great, though the client's menu can be a bit buggy and crashes sometimes.
Azur Lane is a great game for lewds. I'm still not sure how they get away with the age rating on this game, but they REALLY push it to the max in Azur Lane. It's a fun idle game and has some gear optimization, teambuilding, and challenge to it if you want. If you don't care about the sweaty end-game, it's a premier waifu collector that has THE best L2D animations in the entire gacha space, bar none. That being said, it's a game for horny people, and the devs never forget that. They know the player base really well and know what they want. Play the JP or EN versions. The CN version is heavily censored.

If there are no guarantees on ever getting what you want, no matter what you call the mechanic, then that is very wrong to do to people. Fair guarantees and clearly showing the odds of getting all rewards should be a requirement of all games with both gacha and lootbox mechanics. We also know from the example of the difference between _Zombiegal Kawaii_ 's failure and _GunGirlZ_ 's success how much impact a gacha mechanic can have on a game's staying power. Even almost 12 years later, _GGZ_ is still open on the CN and JP servers. That tells you quite a lot about the players who have decided it's worth supporting. And how that support enabled Mihoyo to stay open and create _HI3_ and the other games afterwards.

Summoners war is ALL ABOUT PVP. Anything u do there is directed towards strengthening ur units for PVP. While fighting the games trash RNG too

Problem with one scene of your explanation: you showed a scene from Genshin while arguing that tha whale keeps on paying to keep up with other players...
...I don't know the quote of competitive 7 multiplayer Gacha Games, none of the Mihohyo games has this aspect, neither does Moe Can Change and as far as I've played it, Nikke, Punishing Grey Raven or Azure Lane or Towers of Fantasy don't have this.
In fact, IMHO this pull is weaker in this games than in Neverwinter Online or many other F2P MMORPGS.
Another point is that I on principle don't accept the argument or warning that SOME players might get themselves into financial problems.
Where will we end up, if we always restrict ourselves to what absolutely everyone can handle compentently and savely?

In most gacha games now, you don’t really need to pay to win anymore. (Yes, I didn’t spend even a penny in gacha games and until now I am still playing 10 of them at the same time) Paying money is only for you to gain skins or characters that you might like. But as you grind and level up even the worst of characters you can beat most Champaign in any games, yes, it might take a lot of time to grind and level up them and spend more time and luck on beating levels but it’s possible to play and beat any level (unless you are talking about the 12 abyss in Genshin impact or the 90++ hardest levels in events of FGO) but the Champaign is still beatable

The only Gacha Game I'm playing is Genshin Impact and I really wish it was made into a full triple AAA divided in 3 parts covering 3 regions for game but with the huge amount of Lore this game has is impossible because it is a LOT so I'd admit I have put some money in it because I wanted some characters but mostly has been F2P i have two accounts one was unlucky so I decided to go for a Re Roll and we'll 16, 5 ⭐ characters and the only 4 ⭐ I don't have are Chevreuse and Goro in both accounts I believe I spent a little over 300, 3 times the $50.00 Primo Gems, 10 times the battle pass and around $60 on Welkin moons and the reason why I invested in the battle pass was only when I finished
I did stop playing the game and I was only coming back once in a while that's the reason I lost limited time events and rewards so yeah that's the reason why I did a Re Roll i mean I've been lucky I'm still going to play the game but I will try not to spend any more money on it cause once the the servers shutdown is all over

There's also a thing about people having nothing to do with money, Gacha games are one of those methods for the boredom.
I mean, if those people can save up that many money, they're probably smart enough to manage their spending.
I think a healthy gacha game community would be that where a lot of the players who spend money there are rational enough to know where to stop and not getting indescribably addicted.

    > I don’t recommend FGO as your first gacha game
Me, looking at myself from 4 years ago: Haha… yeah. First gacha game…
