Black tongue is s symptom of pellagra and is a sign of severe niacin deficiency. It is not harmless and goes away by eating niacin rich foods such as beef, liver, chicken, milk.

I also have this problem with my filliform papilae. They grew a bit over the normal size, and keep debris from my mouth especially on the posterior part of the tongue. I am not smoking or drinking coffee, so my tongue can appear white but its still bad because I just want a normal pink tongue. Also I am afraid that it can give a bad breath. I am scrapping my tongue 2 times per day but it will be the same the next day. So I did a small research, and so far I discovered what are the main reasons: it could be the fact that I am not eating very much. I simply dont feel the need to eat much, I was like that all my life. And I read that those papilae grow because the tongue is inactive and there is no action on them. And also dehidration can cause a dry mouth and less saliva to “wash” the tongue. So, I will start to push myself and eat more and healthy (less soft food or sugar and more veggies and food with noutrients [I am also skinnier than I should be ]), will try to drink my 8 glasses of water per day and of course a good oral hygiene, but I did it until now as well. I will see what will change in 1 month and will post here. Maybe someone could use my help.

Still dealing with it. I should say that my eating disorder didnt go away, I think this is a major problem for my tongue, but I cant to more than this, I simply dont feel the need to eat more. I started recently using clohexidine for my tongue. You can find it in a pharmacy. It kills the bacteria because those white/black spots on your tongue are full of oral bacteria and cause bad breath.
You shouldnt use clohexidine too much, try using it twice per day during 10 days, and after that take a break (because it also kills the good bacteria).
I also discovered that you can get your filiform papilae removed by laser. If you are lucky and live in a developed country, you can find an oral surgeon who can do it for you and the problem is solved!
In my country, not so many dentists know how to deal with the hairy tongue..
