This may have been the worst Debbie D episode, but that could have saved it.
On another level, Hilary S. had won an Oscar for Boys Don't Cry in the 90s and I think may have been nominated for Million Dollar Baby in 2005, both great performances in great, gut-wrenching, heavy movies... both movies about as happy as Debbie D.
Too bad they didn't make more out of it.

Holy cow! This Debbie character is based on my own mother.
I work with a woman who is just like this. She's an older woman whose husband left her for a younger woman, so she gets especially negative whenever anyone starts talking about their relationships.
No lie, you walk away from every conversation with this woman feeling like you want to slit your wrists.

Okay, the dog-bark trombone sound made me laugh harder than anything else in this skit
I was in a car accident in 2018. The fire department had to use the "jaws of life" to get me out of the vehicle. SO - it's not always fatal. I was pretty messed up, but none of my injuries were life-threatening. Car was a total loss before they cut me out of it, so that didn't matter, either. My biggest regret is that I was wearing a favorite t-shirt that had to be cut off in the ER. I miss that shirt more than the car.
You are correct, I'm a firefighter, and most of the extrications we use jaws on, are not fatal.

This reminds me of when I was a medical social worker at a hospital here in L.A. and was asked as part of my job to attend a "Tumor Board" meeting with "lunch provided". Wow. I convinced one of the other social workers to go instead; she jumped at any opportunity to impress the boss so she went in my place.
The best part about Debbie is the stupid faces she makes after she said some sad stuff.
Without the corpsing, this sketch just doesn't seem to work for me.
Debbie Downer actually had all these personal disasters to genuinely warn the others about.

When there's no breaking of character these aren't really that funny. For example, see the Debbie Downer Disney episode.
i dont get how society sees debbie as the antagonist. she is right about everything and they just want to blend out reality to have a hedonistic time. should we accept blood diamonds just so a celebrity doesnt need to hear critique? if we all would care about life like debbie instead of concentrating on just our own, earth would be a better place. making reality something we can ignore is egocentric and wrong.
you dont need to let you drag down by it, just face facts and get better. accept your responsibility instead of calling someone who is right a downer.

It's amazing how Seth Meyers made a career as a comedian out of being more smart than funny, and not even smart in an surprising way, just an impressively functional way. Like someone who is always good at school, and can even tell jokes and write sketches... Just not amazing ones.
He probably wrote plenty of jokes in his time - keep in mind that he was head writer on SNL.
