I think she's a good example of how little people think about things. My in laws are like this. Whatever they were taught, they accept it carte blanche. It blows me away because my brain works totally differently. I'm always full of curiosity and questions. But when I ask them things about their own religion- greek orthodox- they have no idea and they've NEVER wondered themselves! For example, one time I said to my sister in law: you guys are like catholics in that you believe in the holy trinity. And she attempted to tell me: no we don't. She was wrong... and she had never known it to begin with and she had never known about lots of other things because she never bothered to think about it. That is just so weird to me. But I guess that's how indoctrination works.
Most people are sheeple. They dont think, they obey/follow authority. As you witnessed there is an astounding ignorance amongst the believers. Most of them dont bother to read their holy book. Funny how some atheists are more knowledgeable about scripture then the average theist. What also bothers me is that theist skip from on religion to another and now claim to have found the REAL god. Uhmm, didnt he belief his previous god was real? What happened to all the proof you had and conversations you had with that god? Was it all make belief after all and how could you proof it? So you are telling me that all believers of your previous faith are all followers of a fake religion? They dont ask these important questions. None of them can demand their god to do a miracle... none! But they are convinced he exists. Funny how that works. 80% of the population are simpletons.
I was raised as an Orthodox Christian. My father is a priest. I was always curious and asked many questions about all subjects, beliefs, etc., EXCEPT for my theist beliefs. Luckily, I began the process of analyzing my "faith" and religious belief system, realizing I didn't have good reasons (similar to Matt) and found my way out. Religion that you are indoctrinated into from a young age can be a major blind spot in one's rational thinking, unlike other less-firmly held beliefs. Adults don't still believe in Santa Claus, but if most aspects of life and culture revolved around Santa being real, many adults would ignore the dearth of evidence for Santa (and evidence for Santa being not real) and still believe in him.
With people like this, their brains have been physically altered to not have reasoning power like us.. A growing up/ lifetime of believing & trusting to "faith" arguments have strengthened their "always follow faith blindly" neurons, so literally weakened their neuronal pathways for reasoning ability.. So they no longer have the same reasoning ability as us, & can't get it back without huge efforts of relearning & regrowth of those neurons .. 😁☮️🌏
And those people cling to the bible & god cos they are scared of life so have a desperate need for a parent figure ( like a child needs ), that will take responsibility for themselves & the earth, saving them from having to be real grown-up adults.. ( Even the Bible says it is "milk for babes & meat for men" ) As kids it tells us a powerful leader is in control so we are safe, but we grow up.. Then we put away childish stories & face the reality we are now adults & are ready for the knowledge we are responsible for ourselves & our kids now.. 😁☮️🌏
Exactly. I find it so crazy that Athiests have to know about, history, Bible scholarship, evolution, cosmology, philosophy, etc and theist ask us to answer why everything. They just need to appeal to magic.

Thus you get this very incredulous type of argument that is almost a caricature of a Christian.
I live in Mass, there is a large Haitian population(3rd highest in US) and my old neighborhood in Boston has become predominately Haitian and my mom still lives there. Interestingly enough, there are many evangelical Haitian churches in the community as many have popped up over the years and Catholic church attendance has increased as well in the neighborhood after years of declining. My mom has two Haitian neighbors who are great but never let religion come up in the conversation. I explained to one of the neighbors that we were Syrian/Lebanese, she kind of went quiet as she assumed we were Muslim haha. However, as soon as she learned our background was Orthodox Christian she said "You're Christian, Praise Jesus!" I then eventually explained I did not practice any religion, the convo went sideways. She's not a troll IMO just in a community that the "Bible is True" is a large part of their community/culture/identity and unfortunately like in this case very vocal about it.

People who believe THIS HARD in their bible or god or whatever always come off like they've completely wasted their life in worship and now, if they acknowledge that they wasted their life worshipping a nothing of a "god" and following a fiction they call "the bible", then they have to face the fact that they've accomplished nothing in life. So, they dig their heels in and insist harder and harder that their god/bible is the way for every other young person after them to waste all their lives rather than admit that they lived their life wrong, and caution others not to make the mistakes they did. If they catch a contagious terminal disease you can guarantee they'll find someone to pass the disease onto rather than isolate, just as they're trying to pass their miserable christianity onto anyone in earshot.
Glad I didn't waste my time worshipping a god that didn't answer any of my heartfelt prayers as a child. I spent that time learning new skills and honing them.

I really think calling her a troll, which she probably doesn’t even understand the term, is not helpful here. I love this version of Matt when the caller clearly has an argument (even if it is bad) to present. In this case it comes off as condescending and rude because I find it hard to believe Matt couldn’t recognize she is a neophyte when it comes to religious debate. I hope Matt can reflect on this because I would like to believe it is the people who have never questioned, or done any research, that these shows can truly help. As humans we have an innate desire ‘to know’ These are questions such as: Why are we here? What happens after we die? Etc. These questions are an important part of our cognitive development as it forces us to search the world around us to come to the best possible conclusion. What religion does is offer a false placeholder for these questions, eliminating a persons ability to develop deeper parts of their critical thinking. Imagine the earliest humans sitting by a campfire and seeing a meteor shower. They must have been so terrified and shocked at what it was they were seeing. How could they even begin to explain what they are witnessing? Most of the earliest people who saw a meteor shower died before they got an answer. The ones who survived became elders in their village and recounted the story to the youth and used the context of their superstition to give meaning to an event they didn’t understand. Nature is unapologetic with giving answers. Our innate desire as humans to know is what allows us to understand the world around us. Religion eliminates its followers this critical ability and therefore is harmful on the deepest level possible.

That's usually the case. Whenever I hear Christians say "Oh I've talked to many atheists before..." I usually roll my eyes and call BS on that assertion. They're usually shocked and surprised that their built in narrative fails the moment they actually talk to a real atheist.

Absolutely not a troll. She is a perfect example of most theists.
Yep, indoctrination in religion is like living in Orwell's 1984.

( Even the Bible says it is "milk for babes & meat for men" )
As kids it tells us a powerful leader is in control so we are safe, but we grow up..
Then we put away childish stories & face the reality we are now adults & are ready for the knowledge we are responsible for ourselves & our kids now..

In the Carribean, people are taught that atheists are either crazy or agents of Lucifer / Satan , literally. She and others like her can probably relate to the notion of different religions but, the thought of life without a God -especially the Biblical God/ Jesus - is unimaginable to most! As humans we have an innate desire ‘to know’
These are questions such as:
Why are we here?
