--- About Ice & Snow Festival Harbin China ---
The Harbin Snow and Ice Festival, held in Harbin, the capital of Heilongjiang Province in northeastern China, is one of the world's largest and most spectacular winter festivals. Here are some key details about this remarkable event:
History and Timing: The festival originated in the early 1960s and has grown into an annual event that typically starts in early January and lasts until late February, depending on weather conditions. It officially began as an annual event in 1985.
Ice and Snow Sculptures: The festival is famous for its massive, intricate sculptures made of ice and snow. These sculptures range from life-sized statues to enormous buildings and intricate landscapes, all crafted from blocks of ice taken from the nearby Songhua River. At night, these sculptures are illuminated with colorful lights, creating a vibrant and magical atmosphere.
Venues: The festival is spread across several locations in Harbin. The main sites are:
Sun Island Scenic Area: Known for hosting the Snow Sculpture Art Expo, featuring large snow sculptures.
Ice and Snow World: Offers a dazzling display of ice sculptures and buildings, including replicas of famous global landmarks, all illuminated at night.
Zhaolin Park: Showcases traditional Chinese ice lanterns and smaller ice sculptures.
Activities and Events: Visitors can enjoy a variety of winter activities, such as ice skating, ice swimming, and sledging. The festival also hosts ice and snow sports competitions, ice sculpture contests, and cultural performances.
Cultural Significance: The festival reflects Harbin's historical and cultural ties with Russia and is influenced by Russian art and architecture, evident in some of the ice sculptures and buildings.
Tourism and Economy: The festival attracts millions of tourists from around the world, significantly contributing to the local economy. It's a major highlight for those visiting China in winter and offers a unique experience of Chinese culture and artistry in ice and snow.
Challenges and Preparations: Preparing for the festival is a massive undertaking. Artists and workers endure harsh winter conditions to create the sculptures, often starting work in early December. The festival's success is also closely tied to the weather, requiring sufficiently cold temperatures to maintain the ice structures.
The Harbin Snow and Ice Festival stands as a testament to human creativity and resilience in the face of winter's harshness, offering a truly unique and awe-inspiring experience.

What's most amazing is that they don't build it only for one year, they build it every year and with different designs and looks, and this year it is already the 25th year they are doing it (Ice and Snow World).
And I laughed when you bought the Bingtanghulu (sugar coated strawberries), because my immediate thought was it would be frozen. 🤣

More than 100 years ago, Harbin, a super city in the Far East, suddenly gained attention again this year. Harbin is one of the six major music capitals in the world and the only "music capital" in Asia, on par with Vienna. For a hundred years, it has been known as "Paris of the East" and "Moscow of the East", and once gathered nobles and nobles from 23 European countries. In the early 20th century, its advanced level far surpassed that of Shanghai. Since the beginning of this year, it has once again attracted global attention and may rise again in the future! Realize great rejuvenation!

Yes. Many countries are poor because many people have no jobs. But as we all know, China has a very huge population. But the Chinese government lifts everyone out of poverty. It is because the government will build many public facilities. More people can find jobs. And similar to the establishment of "Ice and Snow World", it can attract many tourists from other places and foreign countries. This will increase consumption a lot. This is something that many countries can learn from.

Because of the failure of overseas wars, a large number of American companies have announced that they will expand business in China in 2024 to offset the economic losses caused by overseas wars. This is similar to the situation of relying on the Chinese market for blood transfusions after the failure of the Vietnam War. Only this time it was the failure of the war between Ukraine and Israel in Afghanistan. In fact, the United States cannot leave China at all, from the founding of the United States to the present!

One of the more amazing facts is this: the ice cubes are cut from the river in the winter and stored centrally, and they are kept outdoors for an entire summer and autumn, and in the winter they are used to build these snow buildings. The reason for this is that in early winter, when the newly frozen rivers are not equipped to collect giant ice cubes, the organizers store the ice in the winter of the previous year in order to start building these structures as soon as winter begins.

I visited the Harbin ice festival in 1981 when China had just started her economic reform. The ice festival was spectacular and worth visiting. There was fireworks at 4p.m. and then followed by the openning of the festival. It was full of joy particularly for me, a young adult from the south (Guangdong). I went to Jilin as well and it was -40 Celcius and I found it less cold than Guangchou. It was just so strange that the feeling of coldness in Hong Kong was far chill than in Harbin and Jilin.

The railway network connecting the east and west continents during the founding of the United States in the 17th and 18th centuries was also a credit to Chinese workers at that time, but it was not recognized by the U.S. government. Hundreds of thousands of Chinese laborers died in order to build these railway networks. There are also a large number of mining plants.
