There’s a reason the History Channel has produced hundreds of documentaries about Hitler but only a few about Dwight D. Eisenhower. Bad guys (and gals) are eternally fascinating. Behind the Bastards dives in past the Cliffs Notes of the worst humans in history and exposes the bizarre realities of their lives. Listeners will learn about the young adult novels that helped Hitler form his monstrous ideology, the founder of Blackwater’s insane quest to build his own Air Force, the bizarre lives of the sons and daughters of dictators and Saddam Hussein’s side career as a trashy romance novelist.
New episodes twice a week on iHeartRadio.

I always find it weird when conservatives call evolution "Darwinism." Do they call gravity "Newtonism?"
Same reason they call trans people Transgenderism.
It transforms the topic into an ideology and then you can complain about it "being forced down your throat" by "them".
To make it seem more like a political ideology and not science, probably
To be fair the term Darwinism goes back quite a ways, it's been used to justify crap like eugenics even though it has bleep all to do with evolutionary theory.
@@MMuraseofSandvich they use "darwinism" to mean evolutionary science, they're absolutely not contesting social darwinism, even if the word happens to be the same.
they probably call it pound-force-ism because they refuse to use SI units :+
The glee libertarians/conservatives get from thinking that they are the underdogs in a fight is vomitous and sadistic
Aptly put
So seeing oneself as underdogs is a crime now? Better inform the naacp bro.
@esotericjahanist weird how every account that posts things of this nature were all created from late '21-mid '22, I wonder if the troll farms making these posts realizes that information is like, right there on your account and is also a pretty reliable giveaway
Fun fact: the Ayn Rand institute is in Santa Ana.

For once, Orange County, FL residents breath a sigh of relief that the nation's ire isn't on them.
Glad it's not just me lol
Disney world>Disneyland
I was wondering which orange county. Honestly it could probably be both. 😊
@@LordWaterBottle Orange County florida is one of the better parts of the state, Orange County California is one of the worse ones. So OCF>OCC
Just once FL gets a little leeway…
There might be a similar sounding Behind the Bastards about Brevard County and the Space Coast however
As an orange county native and disabled person, I sure do have some stories about this place.
I excitedly await the following episodes.
Sammeeee. More than I could ever cover in a single comment.
Born and raised in La Habra. As a kid growing up in the 90s I wasn't aware of the deeper dark OC lore, I just thought it was weird how my parents tried really hard to avoid political topics at family gatherings and whenever the topic did come up one of relatives would rant about some batshit conservative talking point. I moved out in 2012 but the direction it's taken since then has not surprised me in the least. Definitely interesting to learn how that messed up place came to be.
What you said at the end reminds of when Dara O'Briain wasn't allowed to bring his backpack into the York Model Railway museum, because they were worried about Al Quaeda.
25:25 Last time I went to Disneyland, I wore a "No step on snek" facemask. I got such an ugly stare down from someone wearing a "Save Splash Mountain" shirt. While he was taking a pic with his family. He was giving me the stink eye instead of looking at the camera.
Edit: People did plan a protest on Splash Mountain, but it fell through
10:30 the topsoil actually tends to get literally removed from areas like that and sold while the construction is happening, so it unfortunately can't tell the rest of earth shit!
Sophie's "dirty little group chat" joke was wildly overlooked and I'm not about that. I see you girl.
It really was a filthy crime.
Ah I now understand why my rage towards Nixon is so familiar. Having grown up in the greater San Diego area undiagnosed autistic in a fundie school I had no idea .. any of this... About southern California and it's immensely validating of my confused terrified and pissed off inner experience I bottled up for almost a decade along with so many questions. Thanks for clearing up some of the big ones in this episode.
So completely random question but I'm also pretty neuroatypical and like... Since they mention airports earlier on, and I happen to be thinking about it and I'm sorry if this is rude...
How do you feel about airports? because honestly airports make me feel super safe and at home for some reason as an autistic person. Like I just have this confidence there that everyone knows why they're there and what they're doing there, where they're going, and why. And I don't know if any other people on the spectrum feel this way, so you know, figured I'd ask. Sorry if it's rude again!
I hope things get better for you, friend ❤
@@jordanharper5795oh they have!! I've found a ton of validation, inner child connection, and healing intersection over the course of even just the past two years let alone since dedicating all I had to being able to GTFO of Cali. I've been in Oregon for about 6 years now. 2 of which have been in the woods in Grant County with no address on 8 acres of almost the top of a steep hill. We're like grinches in our cottage that my husband is building and it's bliss. Thank you for your hug of a comment. I hope you're safe healthy and just as kind to yourself as you have been to this here stranger on the internet
@@HyenaDandyI'm unsure honestly. I found out I'm autistic about a year ago. Now that I can understand what is happening internally in regards to sensory sensitivities, the concept of sequence vs simultaneous processing, and other ways in which I would have saved years of internalized stigma, abelism if I had been properly diagnosed when I sought psychiatric help a decade ago. I might have agreed with you on the airports had I been able to see things from the perspective I do now. I think I still might have a ton of triggers to go into an airport and like it. But I've been surprising myself a lot in regards to how I handle both sensory overload and emotionally charged overwhelm this past year so I may end up impressing myself into a confidence boosting type inverted trigger if I needed to go to one. But then that brings up my need to live in praxis to climate urgency and carbon output. I've changed a lot about how I live because I can't in good mind preach without practicing so I set out to do just that. Practice. Which would inevitably keep me out of airports. 🤷 don't think I really answered you but it's the most honest way I could muster
Grew up in that hell hole, genuinely think it’s the worst place on the planet, thank you for illuminating why it became this way
They definitely made a nice place terrible
I greatly appreciate that this episode taught me a ton about the deep right-wing roots of the OC, while simultaneously providing additional context to help me understand the social climate behind the film Falling Down.
I live in Redding CA all my life, can confrim. Managed a CVS and two corporate gas stations. All between 2019-2023. A lot of bigotry. Especially during the covid days.
Hey I lived in Redding for 6 years, what were your experiences?
I Redding is a hot bed of rightwing mind control. I call it MKUtra MAGA
Yuba county native here: my high school mascot was a racist depiction of a native American. I emailed thethe school district as an adult to ask them to consider maybe not doing that. And the response I got was basically, "yeah, we know. A lot of people don't like it. But the farmers who pay all rhe property tax to fund the schools really like it"
You could really see this in the late 80's and through the 90's when the political figures and officials out of there seemed to all be guano crazy. As a youngster it puzzled me because everyone else said Cali was the Lefty motherland growing up in the media.
People never believe me about how red and gross the OC is. Especially Huntington Beach. Ugh.
Frank Zappa wrote a song, kind of in haiku form, about Nixon, titled "Son of Orange County": "And in your dreams, you can see yourself, as a Prophet/ Saving the world/ The words from your lips: "I am not a crook"/ I just can't believe you are such a fool......"
(It's on Side 3 of Zappa/Mothers "Roxy &Elsewhere", 20 minutes of great satire and political commentary, with a song about B-grade monster movies, the song about Nixon, and a song about inner city riots such as Watts (More Trouble Every Day).
"They loved watching themselves be hated."
🤔😶
All the OC fascists are moving into west Riverside now.
yeah I guess OC flipped blue so they have to go somewhere they can displace the locals without going broke. Expect racist skinheads to make a comeback there too
I think the original "Bad News Bears" with Walter Mattheau kind of had this as one of the story lines if im not wrong, a bunch of rich a-holes have to allow a team of rejects and minorities
I can't recall if OC was mentioned by name, but BNB definitely had big OC vibes. I mean, it's California in the 70's and every other team in the league is made of rich white kids.
Robert's old timey asshole voice is perfect.
I grew up in the OC in the 1980s, and always knew it was trash. Thanks for adding details to that trash 🎉❤
@10:35 that bit about the top soil telling the lower layers of crust & mantle how shitty we made it is hilarious 😂
When I first heard the word papistry
My mind immediately conjured an exotic pastry made with vaginal yeast.
2024 did not waste any time to start kicking my ass.
2024 and the ad pivots are starting off strong!
Pretty timely with Huntington Beach's city council doubling down on the MAGA fascism.
What did they do?
1:51 you guys should replace Roberts picture with Matts for an episode
Oh man. I never hear anyone talk about The Fundamentals. But i went to Biola, the college that Lyman Stewart founded, with others.
It's...yeah.
The funny thing about the OC is the only things I like from there are start with the letter p. Pornstars and Punk bands.
Hey, long time fan. The way Robert pronounced *BIO - PIC* made me more angry than any of the crimes. Why are you like this
Idk I've only been pronouncing it with an "oh" sound for a year or two, before that it made more sense to me to pronounce it like biography or biopsy. If it actually had a hyphen in it I might have understood earlier.
ETA: also this change happened for me when I moved from consuming most of my language/media in the written form to more audio/spoken forms because of my weakening eyesight. So I didn't really realize how most other people pronounced it when it was mostly said in my head before then.
that's the epi-tome of bad pronunciation!!
he does it on purpose because he knows it will fuck with someone
I'm only 5 minutes in when I scrolled down to the comments and apparently he's gonna have Vaush on? One way or the other, it's gonna be interesting.
Nor Cal here; my wife is from SoCal; I shared this episode with her. Her first response: "Oh dang, I knew SoCal was racist"
High school in mid 80’s in North OC. Though we had Birch Society and Wally George fanboys all around us, north OC to me was 10 % as overtly racist as the Chicago Northwest suburbs from where we moved.
petition to auto-delete all the vaush comments
Klanaheim...
FYI, "Papist" rhymes with, um, SA perpetrator.
Also, consider "popery" as an alternative to "papistry". It means the same thing but sounds funnier.
Or pot-pourri? lol
Every part of me expects the claremont institute and thr flight 96 election article to feature prominently.
I love how many comments this video got, and i think there's one big reason why lol.
burbank airport is what frannie's looking for
The dude speaking sounds like Brett from tyt
Long Beach is the best airport to fly out of ... but LAX tends to be the best to fly *into*
Plumber wearing a red shirt is a commie...Mario confirmed as a Marxist.
So it's offensive to associate OC with *female* reproductive organs, but...
You see where I'm going with this, right?
I didn't know yanks did commie radio
Adding my support against bringing Vaush on. I'll probably just skip the episode if he's on and would be less likely to recommend the channel in general.
oakies and arkies moned there.
What's a Bi-Oppik
Havent watched the full vid yet, but I'm 100% down to watch a BtB with Voosh
Idk why someone's talking about bringing in vaush but plz no don't do that
It’d be dope to have Vaush on.
Been following Robert since he started writing the personal experiences articles on Cracked like 10 years ago, so been aware of the podcast since day 1, and been into Vaush since I think 2020, maybe ‘19. A collision of my two favourite e-left figures.
Would create a lot of controversy but so does everything interesting with the online left, so whatever. Would be interesting to see how he and Robert might interact as well. Don’t know if they’d get along but it would definitely be interesting.
While waiting for the video to load I thumbed through the comments and saw....vaush mentioned? Oh boy.
Vaush is ubiquitous online. One of the considerable strengths of this pod is that it has absolutely nothing to do with him, in this writers humble opinion.
The conversations about him are ubiquitous, not Vaush himself. And they're on Twitter. Which is a dumpster fire.
The dude himself is a major activist, with a significant amount of positive real-world influence.
He constantly mobilizes his community to rally behind causes, like fundraising half a million dollars, to canvassing across the nation, to getting involved in local politics.
He's interviewed political candidates, done deep dives into topics no one else covers, and he and his community have helped thousands of trans people become more comfortable with their identities.
There's a large crossover audience between this show and Vaush's stuff; the problem is that a lot of viewers here don't realize that yet.
You don't have to like him, but please respect what he's done. Also, if you haven't seen his content in a while, I suggest looking again-he's grown up a lot.
@@RaptieFeathers I am familiar. I am aware of his leftist "credentials." Not a fan, specifically for some fairly recent instances of very dismissive and highfalutin' behavior towards POC and generally terrible attitudes toward women. I'm sure he and I agree on many things but I find these types of actions to be particularly alienating and undeserving of my respect.
@@r.w.bottorff7735 This is absurd. Twitter isn't a source.
@@RaptieFeathers he's earned your respect, good for him. That doesn't mean he's earned mine. I don't think many in this audience with a negative view of him are going to be swayed by the idea that we don't have to like him but we have to respect him. No one is obligated to overlook their discomfort with him or owe him respect.
He clearly means a lot to you and I genuinely hope he continues to give you meaning and comfort through his work for many years to come.
@@WitchOracle Oh, I meant it in the colloquial sense, my apologies. Of course no one is obligated to respect someone; thank you for mentioning this and bringing it to my attention. Genuinely, I appreciate it.
Vaush is not a credible discourse partner.
hey please don’t bring vaush on.
edit: it’s… really not that big of a deal guys. can you chill out in the replies? please? like cmon y’all
sorry about making both the first comments about vaush by commenting about him but also please don’t let vaush on even if you agree on some things it would fall into a big argument cuz his job is arguing. that’s his job. i don’t agree with him on a lot of things but that’s not why i don’t want him in it won’t be a fun episode
@@resident-evil-jerma5389I don't think Vaush would be the one to start the argument this time. Robert has an as-of-yet unspecified beef with him.
@@resident-evil-jerma5389Wait, on *most* things?? Like, democracy good, communism based, systemic racism bad...? Are you sure you meant "most"???
Debate bros are just so, so tiresome. All the angry, sarcastic, arrogant machismo, saying shitty things just to be edgy. So exhausting.
I watch Vaush sometimes but yeah, he can be problematic and would not be a great guest. Besides being arrogant and standoffish, he's been mostly unwilling to hear people out on any race based issues. Especially things like Black Nationalism, he always goes back to the "they wanna do genocide against white people" argument to dismiss people who advocate things like black nationalism. (see also: Professor Flowers)
ABSOLUTELY CALL vaush on
Absolutely do not bring Vaush on sweet jesus i will drop the show so fast.
pity, how we will all miss you...
ugh, agreed. well, i won't drop the show but i definitely won't listen to that episode! so there!!
@@bln8285 Why is that? And please tell me without repeating things that came from Twitter.
What experiences with Vaush or his content make you say this? There are a lot of reasons I can think of, but I'm curious to what you think
@@RaptieFeathersHe word for word explained how his ideal form of socialism would work, and it was literally just Dengism, then refused to ever engage with his viewers trying to explain how China operated.
@@nevermorebouquet3681 What do you mean? He's done a lot of coverage on China, and engages with viewers about it often.
Waaaait. Are you an ML? You sound awfully like one.
dear gods do not bring vaush on
Vunch mentioned.
Serious though, I sincerely doubt that two people who spend time shitting on cons will come to any serious or hostile contention. Y'all should go outside
A Proud Boy broke Robert's arm at a protest in 2021, so I'd say they're at about as much risk as any other vaguely leftist person. But it is a legitimate concern.
Hey really would love if ya do have Vaush on, he gave ya call out to watch your coverage of Kissinger
Vaush would be a great guest-his improv and riffing skills are top-notch
His "PoV: You Encounter a White Liberal" video sums up pretty much every reason he should be on :D
This comment section is fucking insane, did Vaush even get mentioned in the episode? I'm a fan, but I'm not sure if he would be a great fit for the pod anyways. He's usually very dominant in conversations, which I think would be an odd mesh with Robert delivering information. Really don't have a strong opinion about it though
@@sammckenney8163 yeah, that was my perspective as well. He's got pretty extreme levels of "bravado" (that's the best word for it that I could come up with. Or maybe.. _machismo?_ idk) and that can be off-putting in a relaxed environment, such as a podcast like this. Sometimes, I think it helps to distill people down to whether they're a cat or a dog (no, seriously). Vaush is a doggy. Robert is a kitty cat. Sometimes that causes friction, and sometimes the contrast is a wonderful thing! I'm not sure what would happen.
I just got some new weed.. it has clearly snuck up on me, I sound crazy and so I will stop typing now and go lie down😶
you absolutely SHOULD bring vaush on! he's brought this podcast up on so many streams, it's how i found out about you guys (and how horrible america is).
it's telling the few comments saying vaush shouldn't be invited on claim he'd try and start a debate. about what, when he brings up how much he enjoys the podcast, recommends it to his viewers and they all have similar politics? he recently had a guest on his stream for a conversation. there hasn't been a serious debate on his channel for months. if you don't like him fine and valid but don't lie.
Yeah I’ve only heard him mentioning btb positively!
Ditto, and the only time I'm even suggested these videos in my feed is directly after I watch his stream or catch up with a segment on the main channel or the pit.
Fwiw, I think Robert would fuuuuuucking hate Vaush.
@@TheSpoonlessBard Why? And don't cite anything you heard on Twitter, because that's an unreliable dumpster fire.
Vaush is meh. Hit or miss most of the time. Id listen if he was on though
I hope you know fascism is a socialist government based on nationalism Nazism is socialism based on ethnic ground ...your understanding is severely childish of these concepts
Jesus christ. You have literally zero understanding of what fascism is. And your understanding of nazism is severely limited (nazi germany was a state capitalist country).

You should bring Vaush on! Vaush thinks Robert hates him, I don't think that Robert is really aware of him enough to actually hate him. But you guys need to start bringing on some younger lefties! Vaush is a good dude. Don't just listen to what people say about him. Go watch what he actually says. I think you guys would really get along, seeing as your politics are nearly identical.
Robert doesn't strike me as the type of dude that lacks research initiative when forming an opinion on people.
So in other words you're saying Debate me bro! LOL.
@@bunnerkinshahaha so true.
@@bunnerkins When he calls vaush a cult leader in a reddit post saying he doesn't know much about who he is, that's probably a good indication that he doesn't have a good idea who vaush actually is and he's just hearing the same old shit that everyone who professes to hate vaush says. It's not informed by fact, it's over sensitive twitter profiles and right wingers spreading disinformation about someone who they don't like because that person thinks it's silly to put the word retard in the same basket as the N word in terms of social damage done. Francesca comes from a network that's far more fucking problematic than anything vaush says and I say that as a 15 year viewer of the show she comes from. It just reeks of Gen Xers being too old to understand twitch streamers aren't just dumb gamer bros and that streaming is what young people who are actually important to political change, are watching and listening to.
@@flintread2303that is what people who are too lazy to actually watch a Vaush 'debate' say.. besides, he hasn't debated in forever and a day, as he sees most who dm him regarding one he finds are unserious, looking for clout, or simply grifting.

The entitlement, nimbysim and the smugness of OC, especially in places like Ladera Ranch or Irvine is out of this world. Give even even ritzy LA a run for its money
