Being a Bangladeshi myself, I truly commend this fact-base unbiased analysis. Remarkable, nonetheless, I also learned quite a lot from here. Hasina's warm relations and concessions to ultra-right Hefazat to suppress Zamat and for political gain were deplorable. It's not the people of Bangladesh, but the corrupt politicians who have been using religion for their gain for centuries. Thanks to Print for shedding some unbiased light on the matter. Hope this will help our neighbors to understand us better.

I am glad to see someone appreciate Praveen Swami. I see a lot of Bangladeshis who are not very happy about his coverage. He does not mince his words against anyone. He is brutally honest in his analysis. Recently during the Kargil war anniversary, he gave an honest monologue on how the top brass, who bungled the initial response to the infiltration, are still not held accountable. He kicked a storm naturally with the former COAS Gen Malik also criticizing him. But he held his ground.

I was actually working on a research paper for a seminar on Secularism in Bangladesh before the troubles started. The problem here lies solely with the scumbags we had as politicians. No one, literally no one in the mainstream politics were committed to maintaining a secular and amicable relation for the sake of justice. They used religion and secularism purely for their own selfish agendas. The Awami League during the Pakistan era constructed its iteration of Bengali nationalism and appealed to the Hindus purely to use them as a vote bank against the Pakistanis and not because they actually cared. When Pakistan no longer existed as a common enemy, they couldn't care less about Hindus. Sheikh Hasina was no different and she even created a protection racket where she let attacks happen before elections, accuse her political opponents for it and then collect the votes of desperate Hindus by promising protection that is never provided. It was an efficient system if you ignore the ethical implications and look at it from a cold logic standpoint. And Hasina's relationship with India made sure that Hindus were fooled as some of their upperclassmen even joined the Awami League in droves and betrayed their own for money.

So, if any body things, Bangladesh or any other Muslim majority country can survive as Secular state, are living in fools paradise. That’s the sad truth. Omg. .. The bangladeshis lecturing india on secularism and how it has a better track record is the perfect example of delulu. Islam is a state religion in Bangladesh notwithstanding the 2010 supreme court judgment. This by definition relegates all the other religions to secondary status. The concept and ideal of equality gets thrown out of the window. Whereas, even with the rising tide of hindutva and assuming that india is just a notionaly secular country, its still better than having a constitutionally mandated state religion. Inspite of all the issues we do have an ideal to aspire to.
Secondly, before lecturing anyone about minorities fairing better in Bangladesh, the Bangladeshis would do well to introspect as to why the hindu population has consistently declined to under 8% from more than 20%. I guess as the birth place of muslim league one cant really expect anything otherwise..
Anyway i do hope for a peaceful and prosperous Bangladesh with a quick return to normalcy

So logically it’s ok not to abuse each others God.
Changing religion also is not the issue in Islam, but it becomes an issue when you change to another and then start abusing your previous religion. That’s when they are attacked.
Same is happening in today’s india with or without a religious ruling against apostate. Hindutva people are giving mob justice to anyone who is converting from Hinduism and not needed to abuse Hinduism even. Means the apostasy law has some merit I guess.
God definitely knows a lot better than we the people. But the fact is the Quran forbids to abuse anyone’s god and has no punishment prescribed for apostates. The apostasy law is derived from secondary sources and a large majority of Muslims even don’t agree with that law.

Instead of outright rejection, South Asian nations should introspect on their treatment of minorities to determine if they truly uphold liberal values. India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, among others, must examine their policies and decision-making processes. Minority groups should have autonomy over their affairs, with reforms, if necessary, initiated and led by the communities themselves.
Many Bangladeshi citizens view the recent student protests as a revolutionary struggle against authoritarian rule. While this is understandable, it does not explain the attacks on Awami League supporters, including celebrities. What about the targeting of Bangladeshi Hindus and their temples? Despite the existence of Muslims who protect their Hindu neighbors, underlying communalism is evident within society. A people-centered democratic model is needed for the country.
To uphold the principles of secularism, a strong argument can be made for removing Islam as the state religion of Bangladesh. While some believe religious belief can strengthen secular credentials, others question the need for a state-imposed religious identity, especially one established by a dictator in the mid-1980s

    1) Somehow Devanagari was mentioned as the Bengali script at some point quoting some source, which is not correct. Bengali inherits the Maithali script, not Devanagari.

Moreover they are now offering unsolicited advice on how Bangladesh should be governed. For instance, they find an Islamic Bangladesh unacceptable, but a secular Bangladesh is in everyone's interest. Interestingly, these intellectuals seem to forget that their own country, India, has moved away from secularism. Instead, they have chosen a religious party with ambitious plans for their own minority population, which constitutes 20% of India's people.
They don't even shy away from their intentions.
This inconsistency makes them appear hypocritical.
    Unfortunately

India is still a secular country-no matter whatever narrative you try to set, because the majority of its population are Hindus. But no muslim majority country can remain secular and it's the main point of conflict in Bangladesh. It's the conflict between the Islamist majority and secular minority.

The term "secularism" has been abused and manipulated the most in the context of pre-partitioned India (including present-day India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh). In reality, Hindus in India have become more insular and rabid, which has contributed to the rise of the BJP. In Pakistan, Muslims view their situation through the lens of the most regressive interpretation of Islam, and Bangladesh, in my view, at least, has a stronger track record of secularism compared to both India and Pakistan.
In India, Narendra Modi's rise to power has been fueled by hate politics. The BJP, founded on the ideology of Hindutva, has conducted malicious campaigns against Islam, Christianity, and communism. Consequently, India has lost its moral authority to lecture others on secularism. Pakistan, on the other hand, is a failed state with no clear direction. Pakistan means no hopes and expectations.
What is more concerning is Muslims in India, who are the most disenfranchised community, are particularly disadvantaged. The BJP lacks Muslim representation in parliament, and Muslims are in a worse situation than Dalits. Muslims in India face extreme levels of censorship; dissenting voices are stifled, passports are seized, and homes are destroyed by bulldozers. Human rights violations against Muslims are not even acknowledged. India has no right to lecture others on secularism. In Pakistan, Hindus face similar issues, and while Bangladesh has made positive strides, I support the people's movement against authoritarian figures like Sheikh Hasina. Hindutvas is as dangerous as taliban or any form of radical Islam, this is fact and India is not a secular country in sense of the term.
Bangladesh's treatment of minorities is considerably better than what minorities face in India and Pakistan.

U have been saying hindutva so many times...do u know in India that temples get attacked..as recently as in May in ahmedabad..in response Hindus don't attack mosques.. India is secular because Hindus are tolerant.. the second modi came because of the bad economics of congress.. hindutva had nothing to do... Foreign affairs and the economic modi government is doing well....if indian society as per you is so radical..how did BJP numbers come down below majority when Ram temple is built..which is a mecca of Hindus..solved 550 years old problem..so stop comparing India with Bangladesh... Muslims have 5 to 6 kids per family and do not focus on education. Most are dropouts. Very few excel, and are indeed outstanding. No govt can help you. Dalits now focus on education and are improving themselves. Muslim culture of non-introspection keeps them backward and stagnant. Muslims who work in trades do make a decent money. Like an electrician, a plumber, a mechanic, a biryani chef these days earn a lakh or more. These people have more than 1 wife and about 8 kids, but how can 8 kids get the necessary parental focus? So most kids are off track, always blaming govt and throwing stones and destroying public property. Hence the bulldozers.

    • @arkamitra4948

That's a fallacious argument, given you don't define what Hindu is. It's an umbrella 'socio-geo-political' term that refers to people living on lands beyond the river Indus. It's not what the Astika Schools of Dharma refer to, and certainly not to be covered completely by the Beejamantra. By your argument the people who belonged to the Nastika schools, and didn't go by any Beejamantra or any personalized form of Ishta (God) aren't Hindus either.
And the modern day Bengali is no more the one that had only the influence of Sanskrit or it's derivate languages like Magadhi Prakrit. Even though it is written using a Assamese-Bengali script which derives from the Devanagari (following the Abudiga writing system), it has several loan words from Perso-Arabic languages. And that has been the result of almost 800 years of Turko-Persian and Afghan empires in the Eastern part of Modern day India and Bangladesh, and also because of the arrival of several Islamic religious figures from the Middle East who came to spread their religious tenents. And many of them, and even the others were poets and musicologists, had written in Bengali and used Perso-Arabic loan words, which resulted in their works being assimilated in the Bengali literature (and also included several Perso-Arabic words to be included in the vocabulary). Even for that matter, Kazi Nazrul Islam (the one who is considered the Warrior Poet or Bidrohi Kobi), himself largely used Perso-Acabic words in his works. Some of the notable poetic works and hence songs, like "Rum Jhum Jhum Jhum Rum Jhum Jhum" could easily reveal the fact of the matter.
So, if you wish to make such a fallacious conclusion just like what Ms. Liaquat Ali Khan did out of his ignorance of the history and nitty-gritty of the Bengali language, well good luck!

Boring and Biased against Islam . Bengalis wanted Islamic fair state , what they got instead was British style state without Goras , Army dominated by Pathan generals , civil service dominated by UP, CP, Beharis and intellectual and civil life dominated by West pakistani shias and Ahmedis . Only in mid 1960s onward there was serious drive to recruit Bengalis in army and civil service . Before military rule in 1958 , PM ship was almost alternate between east and west pakistan and Bengalis enjoyed their usual three party provincial government political duel and also sent two federal ministers and alternate prime ministers to govern pakistan . Ayub stopped that creating serious political imbalance . Pathans love to act like messiahs and help break Pakistan by stopping musical chairs of PM ship between East and West Pakistan . It is not possible for a person professing islam to consider himself Bengali first and Muslim later , in that case he is hypocrite , worse than all . That is the structure of Islamic faith . Islam is not just a religion it is a superculture and nationalities are its subculture . You travel fro west africa to phillipines , you will find similar culture . Hence bombing in Gaza causes demonstrations in Malaysia and Turkey and USA . And south africa goes to world court . Hinduism has similar thing but on much much lesser scale , jews have more .

@@Myanmartiger921 Rising power of USSR post WW2 had a lot to do with it as Muslims were their next door neighbours . Hence entry of USA in Turkey , Iran , Pakistan , and in South east asia owing to USSR ally China . In middle east because oil wealth needed guardians . But now none of them are needed so much . Most of the high population muslim countries have resources to build nukes themselves .

The people of the Hindh-Pak and now BD inclusive are never secular but economically selfish and are always looking for opportune lucre.
