I looked into the source code and I think this is the way cauldrons fill up:
Every tick in every chunk:
If it rains:
If a random int from 0-15 is 0
Take a random motion blocking block with sky acces
trigger handlePrecipitation on that block
If a random float from 0 to 1 is less then 0.05 and it can rain in this biome:
If the cauldron isn't already full:
Add a fill level
Wiki: "The average rainfall lasts 0.5-1 Minecraft day, and there is a 0.5-7.5 day delay between rains."
So the average rainfall lasts (0.5+1)/2=0.75 days, and the average time between is (0.5+7.5)/2=4 days
So it rains (0.75/(4+0.75)= 3/19 ≈ 16% of the time
So:
3/19 chance that it rains
1/16 chance that a block will receive precipitation
1/(16^2) chance that the cauldron is selected (chunk is 16x16)
5/100 chance that the cauldron is filled up a level
So there is a 0.00019274259% chance a cauldron is filled up a level every tick
So it takes on average 518827 ticks for a cauldron to fill up a level = 25941 seconds = 7.2 hours
There are three stages so 7.2 hours times 3 is 22 hours
thanks!
