High note being pitched too low will sound like it's not hitting the note perfectly. Think of it like a soprano singer trying to sing a line of a bass singer. She tries to hit the low note, but fails to do so and eventually sounds "distorted". The sound properties of the instrumental/stem/audio file also has an effect on the "distortion sound" of it.
