The argument isn't because you're not eating meat and dairy but because you're not eating what they've prepared. Its seen as rude to not eat what's been prepared for you and as such, people get offended when what they've prepared isn't eaten. The best approach to stop people being offended is if said people, upon asking you over for a meal or asking you a dinner party request if you have a dietary requirement. Then you've made it abundantly clear and they've not gone to lengths to something for you. Either that or you bring it to their attention upon invite. Then theres no right for them to think you are picky. I'm seen as picky because I wont eat mushrooms or anything textured similarly. I get it too just not to the same extent.
So true. My nephew is vegetarian and dam I love when he comes over. It's so easy to host him.
