- What would a doctor discover if they lived with you twenty four hours a day? This series will see Dr Rangan Chatterjee leave the comfort of his GP surgery to spend time with families across Britain.
Each week, he will be invited into the homes of two families who are battling serious illness. He’ll gain unique insights into every aspect of their lives, detect undiagnosed illnesses, deliver some uncomfortable home truths and discover ways we could all live longer, healthier lives.
For the last 15 years mum of two, Gemma, has battled cluster headaches up to ten times a day. Experts often refer to them to as ‘suicide headaches’ because the pain is said to be the worst that any human can experience. This crippling condition is destroying family life and particularly taking its toll on husband, Simon. It’s a major challenge for Dr Chatterjee. So far, no one has been able to help Gemma overcome her condition and the family are desperate for a cure.
Gary Farmer lost his leg in a car crash when he was five years old, but he’s overcome his disability and achieved success as a Paralympic ice hockey player. However, a lifetime on crutches and a punishing exercise regime has severely damaged his shoulders and he will soon be confined to a wheelchair. It’s up to Dr Chattergee to come up with a solution to keep him on his feet and able to compete.

I can’t even imagine as a doctor, how hard it must be to see someone in pain like that and be absolutely helpless to do anything about it in that moment. How terribly it must affect her children as well to see their mother like that so frequently😑
I like that the narrator pronounces the doctor's first name pretty correctly.
Damn, having 16 cluster headaches a day, going through the process of getting pretty much 80 headaches a week and end up with 5-10 headaches per week with 24h intervals is... amazing. I am so glad they were able to reduce her headaches, it's such a debilitating problem!
I love this doctor! He is gentle and don't judge and genuinely want to help them find the root of their problem and find a plan that works for them.
wow what a difference with those headaches! from 40-50 originally, up to even 70-80 at the beginning of the treatment. now down to 15 a week. so glad they stuck to the plan and it rewarded them with these changes
Blown away by the woman. She is in so much pain but the way she cares for her family is soooo inspiring. The husband who is with her every single day through the pain episodes. The understanding children. Wow what a family.
The kids in these series are so precious and so caring. Every parent cured is a child that gets their childhood back.
It scares me to think about how so many people get these "diagnoses" that are basically "there's nothing really we can do, you just have to live with the pain/consequences." When really if more effort was put in by the doctors- or more tools/resources were available to doctors, solutions could be found.
I am a living example for the first thing you said :/

I feel so bad for Gemma and her little kids being their seeing your mom suffer is so heartbreaking 💔
Man the kid really is supportive with his parents. Kudos to the doctor for helping the people.
Really feel for Gemma & her family - being in pain, caring for & about someone in pain is so difficult. I don’t get chronic headaches but I do live with chronic pain, so in many ways I can relate. I wonder if the family has looked at psychological supports - this is NOT to say that this is mentally “all in her head” but rather, living with an old injury as well the mental & physical stress that has resulted, really takes a toll on one’s psyche. Also, science has proven that stress can absolutely contribute to pain - when you’re stressed out about the pain, it can create a vicious circle resulting in more pain. Your body tenses up, & over time, your nerves perceive pain & injury in a very different & real way. Good luck to this family - their kids are adorable & very perceptive, beyond their years. 💕
Very good point-it is all connected.
That’s what my doctor said about my cluster headaches but I feel like that’s the easy answer. “Speak to a therapist”, or “ reduce stress in your life” isn’t helping anymore. I’ve tried both and I still get them regardless of the stress levels in my life. This is the first time I’ve seen someone have the same headaches as myself. I came upon this video randomly. Haven’t finished watching yet so I’m
Hoping that’s not the conclusion that it made by the doctor.
@@Diamon.d I used to have them, start in the crease of my eyelid. Usually in stressful situations. If I could lay down, it would resolve. If not, it would travel over the top and back of my head, tense my neck, shoulders, and back. To the point I couldn’t move my upper body to look over my shoulder, to back up the car, for example. But the audible crying? I might silent cry, but just the sound of her crying with that sort of headache was making me bewildered, as noise would cause more pain.
I hope you feel better.🌸
@@Caperhere haha ya I agree. I just lay in bed and hold my face or head wherever it’s hurting on that day and try a f sleep. I roars from. The hot shower and trying to sleep. I stay completely quiet. @@HaseebAhmed-eq6xp so that his out of the house for about 80 hours a week, how would that be helpful 🤔
Not all work that long some perform only 2_3 surgeries a week ...
Thats very much the concept behind having a ' family Physician'. They know the whole history of the patient, how their body reacts to certain medications etc.. Sadly, in the world of specialists and super specialists , family physician or General Practicioner are a dying breed. I am lucky to have one here in India, we (whole family ) have been consulting the same doctor since last 22 years as our first touch point. Obviously we have consulted specialists for certain treatments, but even there the our family doctor has been a great help.

Oh my goodness poor Gemma 🥺 I couldn't even begin to imagine that pain 😫 I get down with have fybromilga......seems nothing compared to what she has to go through!!
Fabulous idea-live with us, see the lifestyle. That poor, poor woman! The pressure of everyday, modern family life though...it does not surprise me. I wonder with families like these if COVID has helped maybe? Of course being cooped up is not good for humans BUT( if you have not caught COVID of course), you are finically stable and have lovely house-I wonder if all of those extra curricular activities, running around, socializing on the weekend, just busy, busy. With all of that stopping maybe it improves their health?
Poor women. I know pain like hers. I have mesial temporal sclerosis. She is a very strong woman.
As a doctor seeing a patient in so much agony I would order MRI Brain and whole spine . I think giving GPs access to imaging beyond Xray and Ultrasound would be a huge boon for primary care.
I really feel for this family. Everyone is doing the best they can and I’m so glad Gemma got her problems addressed but I really think they should do the best they can to keep the children, especially their eldest son, away while Gemma is having an attack… I really admired how appreciative Gemma was of her son at the end. The husband for sure needs psychological help to strategise how to help his wife and look after his mental health because it would be tiring being on that roller coaster (emotionally) with your loved one on top of demanding work schedule. It also absolutely can not be good for the son’s mental health too… no kid should be second in line to support their parent through debilitating pain. There should be more support in between ☹️
I love to see that Indian doctor has helped her 🙏🙏😘
I just wonder why, if she had those headaches for such a long time, nobody ever imaged her neck?! I mean, I'm not a doctor, but it does make sense that it could come from that area...
I thought the same thing. It also makes me wonder if she has ever had a MRI of her brain.
@@Michelle-pc6gp I guess no...I suffered from severe back pain for over a year before someone decided to make a MRI. I don't know whether it is because it is expensive or whether the doctors are just lazy🤷♀️ however, they loved doing x-rays on which you couldn't see anything 🙄
@@spulwasser MRIs have long wait lists in most countries, but CTs are quicker and good basic start especially for seeing gross abnormalities.
@@joywebster2678 once I had the prescription, I never had to wait longer than 2 weeks to get an MRI appointment. I agree with the CT part (although doctors also don't prescribe them), but keep in mind that they emmit high amounts of radiation (far more than x-rays!), so depending on what area of the body and how often it is likely you will have to do it again, I would almost always prefer MRIs
And like I said: the doctors here would only make x-rays which isn't able to image much besides bone
@@spulwasser congratulations in my country MRIs have 4 month waiting lists minimum, and that's with appointments 24/7

When I heard Dr Rongon Chatterjee , I felt happiness. Chatterjee is a Bengali surname. It's always a pleasure when I see Indians are helping others in abroad. And this becomes more pleasurable when I see someone is carrying a Bengali surname .
I used to have excruciating headache that would also affect my eyeballs, my gums, my ears, my throat, down to the back of my neck. I went to a few doctors, and each one of them gave different diagnosis with different prescription. It helped short term, but the pain never really go away. The triggers could be from sunlight, noise, smells, fatigue, pre and post menstrual stress, hunger, etc.
Do you still get those?
Mine changed after my 3rd stroke. Must less painful now. But no one looks at the lifetime of migraines preceding the onset of strokes and connecting the vascular picture. Very frustrating,

maybe the headache this woman has is caused by some dental caries .. the caries can cause a lot of inconvenience including a headache ... i also recommend to have a check in a dental center .. please do not underestimate this option🙏❣️
It may be but typically really bad tooth decay causes constant pain rather than this episodic pain and it radiates from the mouth area rather than the back of the head.
@@tia2745 Trust me! If I tell you so, I am speaking from experience! Tooth decay can cause various ailments in different areas of the body, making you think that you have other health problems, but very often it is caries that cause many ailments in us such as : chronic fatigue, back pain, frequent severe headaches etc ... people should know more about their teeth and the problems they can cause if they are not treated properly The importance of dental care is essential for health of our whole body! unfortunately we are poorly informed and very often we rely on the wrong doctors who make us slam left and right making us believe that we probably have other problems, underestimating the teeth sector, and I believe that many do it also on purpose, only because in order to fill our pockets, and in the meantime a trivial tooth decay can become more infected for our whole body, also damaging other teeth and I reiterate the general health of all our body thus damaging our lifestyle. Please do research, medical studies attest!(especially the great doctors of the past) ❣️🙏❣️

Dr Chatterjee - thank goodness for you and your holistic approach, including your willingness to look at complementary therapies. I am staggered that Gemma has had to deal with these headaches for so long because no one before you has been able to guide her towards getting those X rays and seeing an appropriate practitioner who can help her neck position. I would think that the reason she improved during pregnancy was due to the relaxin she was producing, which would have relieved the tension in her misaligned neck.
The rest of the people you are helping as well - they must be so thankful for your wide-ranging approach.

I suffer with migraines lasting around a week every month or two. I've tried a myriad of treatments and am now having a monthly injection- still with no success.
It's incredibly difficult to deal with the pain, so I can only imagine how Gemma copes with her condition and still achieves so much. I don't think she realises how amazing she is.
Seeing her husband support and hold her during her pain was touching. So often partners do not stay when the other becomes ill.
If you are a woman and you get headaches monthly I would assume the cause are your hormones.
@@a.h.6461 no, they're aren't hormonal and it's not the same time every month or even every month. My neurologist and gynaecologist have both ruled this out.
I'm aware of some triggers, like fluoro and LED lighting, dehydration etc but often there's no trigger, especially since they've changed from one every few months to clusters.
I've tried all sorts of medications and treatments and am on my 4th month now with Ajovy monthly injections.

Hi it's 2023
Genuine listening, support and effort was priNciple help + pathology help 😇
I have migraine and I thought it is the most painful thing one can suffer. But this cluster headache is something else. I pray for this woman and the guy with problem in his shoulder to be 100% healthy.
We need doctors that have more time to sort these types of issues out. For 5 years I had severe pain in my hip. It started suddenly and over a period of time i was unable to walk 30 metres. Lazy doctors (4 of them) an x-ray and a CT scan told me it was age, bursitis, arthritis, laziness, muscle weakness, lifestyle and a dozen other things That were my fault. Then I got a blood clot in my toe and my surgeon discovered I had virtually no blood flow in my hip or pelvis. I had surgery and instantly I can walk without any pain. He said I’m lucky I didn’t lose my leg. I don’t think it’s a lack of care from doctors, I think it’s a basic lack of time.
What an amazing doctor! This guy is an inspiration. I wish all doctors actually cared about their patients enough to help them heal, rather than suppress symptoms with drugs.
I wish and pray Gemma gets completely cured and all who are suffering from health issues get magically cured and live a positive happy life.
That is what inspires me to be a doctor ♥️
That Doc everyone needs , gemma truely brave women
Thank you so much, lots of love from India ❤️
Their kids are very lovely.
I truly don’t understand why Gary don’t get a leg prothesis from the hip or use those mechanical leg exoskeletons that will reduce the fatigue and effort in his only leg and arms when he is not training .... The lady with the Suicidal headaches is a very brave woman and a remarkable mother . I think she can try Chinese acupuncture in the neck and pain areas and improve a lot also.. Great episode
They said in the episode that the nature of his amputation prevents him from using a prosthesis
He doesn’t qualify for a prosthesis. Also though, the cost is significant and is a huge barrier for many many people. Typically the NHS and most healthcare systems around the world only cover the bare minimum for disabled people. Mobility aids cost a lot of money out of pocket and if you’re trying to get it funded it can take years of paperwork to qualify for it.
Acupuncture, deep tissue massage, postural assessment, brace if needed to support the neck for that poor woman
