@@robdebone Agreed! If the Tank dies in a small (3-6) group of mobs, it usually means that the healer is not doing their job or the DPS doesn't do enough damage to kill the mobs. Healing the Tank is top priority of the Healer and healing everyone else is secondary.

In every mmo tanks are expected to be experts, weather it’s the start of the game or end game.
This unrealistic expectation doesn’t give new tanks any room to learn since on their first mistake they’re ridiculed and likely kicked, this is a problem in pretty much all mmos.
I was lucky enough to have friends to play with, letting me actually learn to tank.

It also doesn't help with learning how to tank when running dungeons full of end game players who just rushes the dungeon from start to finish. I was levelling up a tank and it was a terrible experience. I really didn't mind other players who such at their role like dps not doing damage, etc because I understand they're beginners who are just still trying to figure things out like rotations, etc. But when you are grouped with CP players, they just run ahead of you, pull aggro on every trash mob and bosses.

I joined eso 2 months before Elswyer expansion. I've been gaming forever, but never played a tank. At 180cp I've done most vet dlc HM when people told me I wont be able to do it cause my CP is to low. And I'm not even that good. All it takes someone explain everything properly. Also now I'm trying HP build and its kinda hard to manage my recources :) anyway I don't think ESO is that hard as people describe it. I simply think majority of ESO community instead of learning mechanics simply emo quits. Seen many dd's leaving pledges just because someone keep dying even tho they not doing any better themself. I guess hardcore people plays good, but majority are way below avarage. Anyway if you in EU and need a tank I'm usually doing nothing so hit me up if you willing to let me learn:>
p.s Tank is fun, but fun only when whole group knows what they doing. I got so mad last week at one of the old dungeons when people simply refuse to communicate ant clearly doesn't know what they doing which causes many issues.

Most low lvl people like myself are so patient and they pick up the quest with me and we go ahead slowly but we manage it and we do GG and say bye. But the CP people is where the issue begins. Another reason why there is so few tanks compared to dps or healers is the fact that you can't really do solo content (questing/overworld) without changing your build. In a full trial tank setup you do nearly zero damage. And its not that much fun going through quests with zero damage. Most newer players only focus on one character at a time. And if you build a tank, it will be pretty much limited to group content only.
And about fake tanks. If you have a taunt and can survive the aggro, you are not a fake tank, you are a real one. Even if you wear dps sets. 99,99% of all dds queuing as tanks don't have a taunt and die on the first trash pull. That's why people hate them so much.

*"Another reason why there is so few tanks compared to dps or healers is the fact that you can't really do solo content (questing/overworld) without changing your build."*
This is the real reason. Compared to other MMOs, tanks in those other games can generally still clear solo content without too much fuss. In ESO, you won't die--but neither will your targets.

    • @hydestein6959

Serious tanks have overland set ups they can switch to for questing or solo content

    • @toml1652
      @toml1652 4 года назад +5

I agree, early in the game I was very short on skill points and space (no eso plus) as I practically had to keep S+B + inferno and a totally different setup just for soloing. If you don't use addons for gear/skill management, this is not ideal at all. This still is a problem, as with crafts and tank+ solo build I am lacking skill points and need to basically keep up to date two sets of gear, and work to get 2 "end game" setups, to make solo play viable.
For me, I often tank in games, main reason being that they are always needed, so when a few of my friends started playing at the same time, I volunteered to tank. As this game is different from the other MMO:s that I have played, it took me quite a long time to get the self confidence to tank in PUGs, as mistakes as a tank cause errors easily, and it takes a while to get good at spotting the top priority targets for taunts in trash pulls and so on.

    • @Kezat
      @Kezat 4 года назад +2

With a new character this might be the case but once you get some skill points to spend its so east to throw on some med armor and solo quest. Even a real low dps number like 5k is more then what you need for questing.

as a skilled veteran mmo tank, i can say that even if your an amazing player, as a tank your always the unsung hero. When you have a bad tank everyone notices, but with a great tank no one notices. (unless you know what to look for in a specific game) I'd get plenty of kudos from other tanks but not many others cared. Wow and some other mmos, idk if eso does, have websites with rankings. I've been tanking in WoW for around 7 of my 10 years in the game, but on ESO I could't stand how awful tanking is handled. You have no freedom, aside some 4-mans fun, to gear and tailor your playstyle as you see fit, you HAVE to wear the sets and skills that the leads want you to, or you are not tanking at all. People even go as far as labeling this interest on other sets as "selfish tanking" lol, god forbid you not wanting to be a buffbot. That never happened to me in WoW and other games, I always choose my own gear and skills, and tank was always the most fun role for me. Tanking in ESO is pure frustration, from lack of freedom on your choices to have to deal with insanely bad pugs more than anywhere else, because the game ( and the community as whole, let's not lie to ourselves) can't bother to teach people how to play properly. So yeah, I don't blame people for avoiding tanking in ESO like the plague, it not a rewarding experience.

    You're pretty spot on.
    Couple extra reasons being.
    1. New mechanics and more and more 1 shot mechanics on minor bosses with minimal timeframes to use buggy mechancis for the synergies to prevent them. This makes tanks feel the time is worthless
    2. To many bosses or sub bosses with "invincible" health bar moments that stop dps, and arbitrarily prevent faster burns. If the dps is good, let them be good. Tanks dont want to tank forever its boring for them just kill
    3. Longer and longer ad pulls that have more danger than the actual boss battles through sheer numbers and targeting issues to prevent deaths of members.
Eso hasnt needed an aoe agro in the past, but if they are going to flood the screen with ads that hit like bosses give the tanks a damn aoe agro. Put a cap
on how many/range whatever but the time in eso calls for making Tanking more convenient with all these additional mechanics and more and more one shots

    • @landladyification

I definitly agree with your #3, too much adds in newer dungeons with no "big badies" to focus on, so you just spam claws, blockade, whatever to get that fcking horde sorted until your dpsies killed em.
Also I agree with #1, which is really bad with that "performance" Eso shows atm. If the game would work perfectly instead, I would love those mechanics, cause they make me feel like I'm clever dodging and dancing around a big bad Dark Souls boss with my skill and knowledge being the only weapon I need.
#2 I must disagree at least partly. You're right, that "big mountains of hp" are no fun to tank, as they are no fun to kill. But if a boss has many hp and does a lot of cool mechanics I really hate it, when my dps says "just burn em". That feels like "we don't care if the tank can have some fun doin his job, positioning boss/adds, avoiding mechanics and keepin our lousy asses alive, I just wanna make things DEAD!"

      landladyification
I can see the argument being made for number 2 being debatable.
I think it comes down to a matter of preference.
I like the smart positioning, but I find minutes long phases of invincibility as a poor way to incorporate it.
A few dungeons and trials have done it pretty well. But some of them have the 1 and 3 issues that ruin it.
The content should be fun and challenging. Not overbearing with mountains of ads who just have large health pools that one shot your group everywhere.

I mostly heal, but quite a few times I've found myself being the only person willing and able to switch to the tank role when other tanks have quit the game or left the raid group. I think the thing that I found most frustrating, compared to healing or DPSing, was that the only chance you get to practice your role is by going in to the content you're working on with a (mostly) full raid group. Want to practice pulling flame atros under Yoln HM in vSS? You need to bring a healer to babysit you and they need a full group so that they don't instantly die to the stack mechanic. Want to Practice Palm Strikes on Pinnacle Factotum in vHoF? You have to get a group together that can kill raptors for you and, again, a healer to baby sit you. Want to practice solo tanking Z'maja's Shadow in vCR? You get my point. When you're learning to tank you pretty much have to do it live and with an audience that will notice every mistake. Learning to tank with a patient, supportive group is rough enough and those aren't adjective many would use to describe the endgame community in ESO.

It's also partly the same reason as in any other game with tanks: most people want to be that hero who wipes the enemy out, plenty want to be the healer that pulls that clutch revive or pulls everyone through with just enough health, but there's not many who just want to be a slab of meat whose primary role is to sit around absorbing attacks until everyone else is finished killing things.

@@vaelicusthepaladin there's no need to make tanks deal cheap damage. It's a useless way to balance out PvE. DPS of course should definitely have the highest damage potential but Tanks should be able to dish out good damage as well. As long as Tank has a taunt, they can tank, bottom line. Instead, a lot of MMOs give the Tanks a ton of CC and utility on top of their high Effective HP and balance it out by making them hit with the equivalent of a wet noodle. As a general MMO rule, I'd rather the CC and stuff go to DPS classes and give Tanks better damage potential and self-buffs. Of course, that'll never happen but I still think it would make Tanks more admirable in the genre.
I fully understand teamwork in MMOs, but they could easily balance the extra outgoing damage out by giving enemies higher health in team-PvE instances. And the reality is, all MMOs have solo content. It's unavoidable. But that content makes running a tank way too tedious and boring. FF14 is a great example of this. You'll NEVER risk dying in solo-content due to the extremely high Effective HP that tanks have. You're practically god mode in that game during solo-content (not that solo-content is all that hard). But you can bet your ass it takes way longer to do any of that content by going tank.
I just think the general rule of tanks having garbage damage potential is very dumb and there are other ways to balance it out.

DPS have target dummies to practice a rotation to perfection, on the other side as a Tank you cant really "practice" add pulls or "practice" uptimes (without knowing the fight). I really do love tanking because of the challenge it brings alongside as you mentioned the responsibility. I always make sure my group knows when I am at fault but also if there is something THEY can do to assist me weather it be shards on cooldown, not standing behind me and just general things I may notice as a tank that they might be blind too.
Tanking is very rewarding and challenging and is certainly my favorite role because of this. If you're able to find a good group it is very hard to step away from that or get into an encounter where the dps/healer capabilities may not necessarily match your own.

Another issue with tanking in ESO: ridiculous fuckin dungeon mechanics combined with stupid one-shots that even kill a blocking tank ends up making it feel like tanks can't actually act like tanks.
While I would say that everyone in the group needs to understand mechanics of any particular boss fight, tanks have to especially have even more knowledge about mechanics, who they need to taunt, where they need to move during the boss fight at any given phase of the fight, what attacks they can die from even though they are blocking, etc. All of these things plus what I just mentioned earlier really make tanking unattractive and even infuriating to a lot of folks including myself sadly.

I loved how engaging it was, find the priority target - the biggest, baddest mug in this joint and hold him while grabbing, chaining, and locking down the rest of the fodder. Having to taunt one at time was kind of fresh in comparison to all the other MMOs with AOE taunts. It was fun. But you hit the nail on the head. I've recently started a character on PC-NA, a stamina DK, just like my main on EU. When I was farming my starter sets (Bone Pirate for PvP and Ebon for actual tanking) as I queued exclusively as fake tank. CMX showed my overall DPS between 55-85% of group. Since I have not yet reached max CP there I'm queuing daily for random normal, and most times, even if I start out as tank I need to swap do my DD gear mid dungeon to just clear it in reasonable time, or at all. I remember a few days ago I got Scalecaller Peak for random dungeon, and after the ogres I changed to DD since group DPS was something like 15k. I mean for pledges I queue as legit tank and managed to PuG all dungeons on veteran, clearing all vanilla and about half of DLCs on HM, though I have more of a group heal oriented build - hitting Echoing Vigor+Fragmented Shield every 10s, and if anyone drops low Earthgore will save them. I've tuned my build in that way because I've seen that in most random groups, even if the healer isn't fake, he's simply slacking - there were plenty of groups where I accounted for more than half of group heals.
Among many very bad groups, I've even had a pleasant surprise one day, got to the non-DLC pledge one day and I noticed the group DPS was fine, so I asked them at the end of the first dungeon if we could run the DLC too, it was Vaults of Malatar. We cleared the HM without issue (I hadn't cleared it before, all my previous runs were wipe fests and I didn't have the courage to even try HM, even non HM was pretty hard), got the speed run as well, even done that achievement with healing Thuraya that I only managed to get on EU when I was healing. One of them added me and we've run some dungeons since.

I do think one of the main reasons you don't get many at end game is, as you mentioned, groups want 'already good tanks'. It is intimidating when a whole group can be set back because you don't know what you are doing yet - and your raid lead might not know what it means to tank a certain boss or mechanic either. Progression style groups need to be open to taking in tanks without the experience but are willing to learn.

I'm the Tank that refuses to do trials with pubs due to the toxic/cancerous meta tryhards. I only tank for friends. The Eso community has ruined that for themselves. That's why you can't find tanks. We're not there to receive shit. We're there to play the game too. js. And you'll continue to see this until adults open their mouths and correct the little children that want to disrespect the tanks and actually suggest helpful tactics or better yet (cause this is almost unnatural for most people now and days) offer "words of encouragement." They always help. Unfortunately, most under the age of 30 don't understand what i just said and probably won't until they're 30 themselves. Thus is our conundrum.

As a tank, it's extremely hard joining in PUG dungeons because people fail to see the mechanics, then blame me for it. Tanks are there to be tanks, not be scapegoats. It's a lot better grouping with people you know, but for me, it's challenging to connect with people again (long story)

To be fair, it sucks as a pub player when you get stalled at the end of a vet dungeon or continuously wipe in trials because the tank has inadequate gear or isn't aware of mechanics--usually both. The latter isn't much of a problem and can be fixed with some patient teaching, but the former is literally raid-ending and frustrating for everyone. I understand that it's necessary to kick poor tanks, even if it's not the tank's fault, but it's true that people become very caustic in those situations, and that's regrettable.
The real issue is that ESO is poorly designed both in terms of gear progression and player education. There are ZERO item progression tutorials in-game--it's so bad that I didn't even know what a "monster" was until I wiped at the end of a vet dungeon and was politely informed that I needed a monster set to tank properly. Is it my fault for not looking up third-party guides? Yes. Would I have not ruined that dungeon instance if ZOS bothered to write a short guide on item builds for new players? Also yes.
Gearing up is in and of itself a tedious affair. To get the proper sets for meta tanking, you have to run specific dungeons or trials repeatedly until you get the right drops. To do repeat runs, you need to find people willing to delve into the same dungeon over and over again for an hour or two. Since you're a new player and most of ESO's player base has been playing for probably 4+ years at this point, it's going to be hard to convince any geared vet players to waste 2 hours of their time for virtually no personal benefit just to help a new player gear up running normals; so, if you're not lucky enough to have friends who unconditionally love you, you just have to suck it up and either hope you get lucky with some random polite LFGs or just settle for a non-meta set of solo farmables. Getting a monster isn't too hard since you only need 2 items and most people are willing to run normals for the typical meta monsters, like Troll King, since they're part of undaunted pledges. Except, you will need DLC to unlock most of them (Bloodroot forge, for example) which further gates new players.
But even after you acquire a complete gear set, you're not done, because you need to use a maxed-out crafting character to improve the pieces to at least purple quality using expensive mats, assign the correct enchantments to each piece, and then use 50 transmutation crystals per item (of which you can only hold 100 without ESO plus) to get the correct traits. THEN, after 1k hours, you have a sub-par character that is, at the very least, capable of tackling some veteran dungeons at a minimum level of viability.
All this obtuse grinding works harder against tanks than any other class because the tank's survival is solely crucial to success in a trial. DPS can suck, and all that means is that the trial progress will be very slow; however, if the tank sucks, then the trial wipes and no progress is made at all. Thus, if a tank doesn't have optimal items, he can't even begin to tank. A sub-optimal DPS, on the other hand, while not ideal, is merely an inconvenience for the party as a whole.

Coming from wow where i was mainly playing healer in Mythic + and raids, i find healing and tanking really boring in eso. Not really much to manage, you just agro all the packs in the dungeon, no really hard mecanics on trashmobs to manage, there is nothing to do compared to mythic +, and the rotation is boring as hell (and in wow it was already boring, but here it's wayyyyy more).
Healer u just throw and refresh healing spells, and when someone get damaged, it instantly make them full HP. 90% of the time your dps don't get any dmg and you just overheal all the time, it's good, but compared to playing these two roles in wow, its far from exciting :/
But the DPS gameplay of eso is really really good, so i'm playing this, the problem is the long queue times :/

I enjoy tanking, I really do, It's very important, but the thing that pisses me off the most are ppl who rush normal dungeons, srly go veteran if you are that good, there are ppl out there that actually want to read things.

I've just started a Tank build (imperial dk). I play solo pve most of the time and coming from dps sorcerer (high elf) it's really noticeable on the damage drop off. I do find having to pick skills that I can do some damage with just so I'm not hacking a skeever for three hours lol, but I find it fun when a random amount of players are doing dolmens or world bosses and you're tanking the attacks, you realise you're actually really important in helping keeping the other guys alive (a little longer). I don't really do dungeons etc as I just get kicked because I'm not good enough, and the toxicity makes me avoid it all together (had enough of that on other games). I think if eso were to have more of a dedicated tank skill line then more people would perhaps play it. The warden and necromancer seem to deal with dps which there is plenty of already imo.

    Hello!
First of all, I had to say you have an incredible speaking voice! Very pleasant to listen to, and very clear.
That said, I wanted to say that I too have found some toxic people out there, I guess it comes with the territory of MMOs. But in all honestly, I've found if I'm unfamiliar with a tough dungeon or trial, I use a guide to learn about it and it's mechanics before I go in,.. Also I am up front with the group first that it's my first run here, but that I did study it. Most have been willing to give me a chance after that. Also, as one that plays all roles, I go by a basic rule:IF the DPS die, it's usually their own fault, if the healer dies... it's the tanks fault... and if the tank dies... it's the healers fault. (it of course isn't always true, but it is most of the time I believe. :-) But bottom line... no matter who's fault it is.. we all have to learn sometime, so remember to be patient with each other out there, its a social game to have fun together, so there's no reason for being toxic. And if ya run into someone toxic, try not to take it to heart, maybe they're just little brats that need a nap instead of playing a game! lol take care out there!

ESO makes it pretty difficult to even get into tanking when you're new. You can't level as a tank, so you will spend a couple hundred hours getting to level 50 and then grinding a few hundred CP as a DPS. Then, besides learning a complex new playstyle, you have to level up a new skill line (1H & shield), redistribute your attributes and your CP and, optimally, get new gear. That's a lot of hassle, especially for a new player.

Finding a "good" dps or healer.. that's the struggle.

  • @Scott-ShaggyBeard

When I played... I ended up tanking and learning to tank because... there were no other tanks and no one wanted to tank, so therefore we didn't do content. I preferred to heal or DPS and would do both of those better than most who joined trials, but... because we didn't have a tank, I defaulted to that way too often. I then got trapped into tanking even when we had another person who could, because I became really good at it.
I remember being in a vAA group and the tank kept dying to the axes. After weeks...months... of being in that progression group, I finally tried tanking the trial and it became our first time beating it because I had zero problem tanking, particularly the axes. Meanwhile it was painful because the DPS, when we failed, were the cause... they couldn't do enough and their parses were usually 20-30% lower than mine when I was on DPS.
What this overall resulted in was me starting to hate the game because I didn't have or couldn't play what was originally my main. After 2 years of being in a progression group that caused me to bang my head against the wall, I quit. I was in another progression group, but they disbanded after getting burned out (though we were a million times more successful)... that one kept me afloat and interested for a while.

From my experience (started as a Tank with my group of friends) the biggest problem is that random players or pugs just expect you to know everything abour the dungeon, trial whatever... even if it's your first time doing it. I mean I understand that people don't want to "waste" their time by doing a boss a couple of times until you get the mechanics etc. but the average PUG random acts like you should know the content better then they do... if they are 810 and you you're somewhere around 300, I mean seriously?
Another thing, and this is probably more specific to our group, we like to learn the dungeon etc. on our own. Figuring out the mechanics and stuff like that, you know actually playing the game and not trying to get the most efficient use of our time like the game is your job or something. So yeah, we may die the first couple times on a new boss or when we try Vet for the first time, but honestly it's way more satisfiying when you clear it on your own and don't have people hold your hand and give you a step by step explaination on how to play the game.

    • @newworldforward1842

I agree, getting into tanking in ESO feels really difficult and you get very high expectations thrown at you straight away. I had the misfortune of merrily picking my first character to be a tank and I decided to use greatswords as my weapon... it took me embarrassingly long to realize that taunting doesn't work here at all like in other mmos and there is basically very few extremely specific builds that you have to follow to make tanking work AT ALL. That basically makes it being a "casual" tank impossible. You either optimize top tier right from your first time and learn the boss mechanics enough to recite them in your sleep and are alsoa good group leader - or you're useless. I was lucky to do my first random dungeon - Moongrave Fane with a very patient and helpful group, so instead of kicking me, they switched roles with me so I healed instead and we made it through, but now I'm just questioning if I really want to continue this struggle and become a proper tank if it gives me preactically zero build freedom and ties in with massive pressure, especially when I reach harder content.

  • @douwe4254
    @douwe4254 4 года назад +3

I started playing again two months ago and said to myself: 'I will force veteran content (mostly dungeons) exactly how I (!) see fit'. I will not give a single F about your 8% extra damage, not your shields, your little tweak so OTHERS will perform better. I have a Necro Healer that does 22k single target dps with CP350. On almost all vanilla dungeons I got the achievement of nobody dying, and guess what? Timed achievements as well. Most others healers I meet (as a tank) barely participate in the fight, they "just stand there waiting for others to get punched".
So with the knowledge I got from my healer I jumped to tanking. I told myself, "I'm not gonna be a concrete wall that buffs others" I'm doing between 5-10k dps being lvl 30 and I control the entire fight. People call me crazy, saying the Tormentor set is "bad". I've never had a better time. I'm not here to give you 5% extra hp so you can stand in fire 0,2 seconds longer. I'm here so you don't get hit in the face because I can.
ESO from the ground up has been designed to support your own playstyle, but people want to see their Trials dps numbers in dungeons as well now. As a healer I've been told to slot skills (IN the dungeon) so others could do more dps. So I shared my meters which shows that I - the healer - did between 40-50% of ALL damage in the dungeon. My 2 buffs will make sure I either lose damage capabilities, OR I lose heals. Both of which they don't want. "I am the buff".
This doesn't mean that META is bad. No 90% of the builds you find online are for Trials. You cán use them for dungeons, but you won't make it any easier either. People complaining there isn't an AoE taunt: yes there is, it's hidden inside a set, a set called "the tormentor set". Will this be useful for trials? No, not on every fight. Will it be useful in some fights, absolutely yes. What is happening is this multitude of players who ALL have the same builds. In a game that - from the ground up - wasn't designed to be played this way. And tanking at low level is SUPER easy, as in, you don't even have to block, you don't have to step outside things. The difficulty increases over time. But at some point you will face a veteran 'hard mode' boss that has mechanics you haven't prepared for. They will kill your sweet ass in one single hit. Remember doing the first hard modes on your dps or healer? It's the same issue, but now... you gotta start paying attention.
On top of that, there are WAY too many high level players clearing easy content, blasting through dungeons in 5 minutes "because they don't wanna waste time". So as a tank I generally don't even have to tank - thus train myself - because these niblets don't have any patience. I'm still doing a fine job, but I fear that once my tank meets my current CP, I'll meet players that expect me to know each fight. Yes, I will, but not playing AS the tank.

Holy shit when you mentioned the switch into a DPS from a tank is on point. DDs are allowed to be the worst of the worst and they get a lot more opportunities to develop whilst when I was tanking, I'd just watch them spam one attack until they could execute. I loved making tanks and experimenting with builds and my main is still a tank but when I watched 3 DDs (one with a single aoe heal they forget to use), enough times I realised that tank building is much harder, especially for some vet dlc dungeons. I'd rather wait longer as a good DD than take longer slogging through a dungeon I know can be done in 10 minutes

Well, with the new vampire system vamps with heavy armor who don't use the abilities that sacrifice health, can actually regen enough health to tank. The stunning ability aoe morph is useful when tanking as well
Edit: using either dark elf or dragonknight, maybe both, would also help against fire weakness
