I live on US and we are new to koi and keep our koi in a mudpond. We let them eat the natural foods in the pond and treat with hikari silkworm. We look forward to see how they do.
They grew significantly. They were about 6 inches when we got them. They were at least double in size when the temps started dropping. Temps are dropping and water is freezing now, they seem to have gone dormant.
I feed Saki Hikari growth + Saki Hikari color food. My tosai grows between 3-10cm per month in summer depending on its genetics. For color development, I was told saki deep red and Odakan is the best.
I always buy Northfin Koi Supreme. Northfin makes the best fish food on the market in my opinion. Its certified organic, uses whole ingredients, only con is that it has a slightly shorter shelf life because it has no preservatives. Easily alleviated by keeping it refrigerated or frozen after opening.
Yvo - I’m amazed that this vlog never mentioned the water parameters for Ammonia, nitrite and nitrate....excess levels of all 3 will affect the koi wanting to feed. This is primarily linked to either poor filtration in a pond or more usually, overstocking. As you have seen, Japanese mudponds have very few koi for their size.
Hello Geoff, There are maybe 20 different reasons I could had mentoined in the video. But I think those subjects need a video on there own. I get your point but you need to understand that most of the community even never check there water values. So we need to start at a certain level of information. To much information and people will loose the focus. Learing is step by step, even for me ;)
I have a giant avocado tree and have been cutting up avocados. The Koi love them. They grew noticeably this summer. I have been lucky and have been able to give them 3- 6 per day. They are the giant florida avocados. Like 2 pounds each. In the spring I have mangoes they love them too. I obviously give them koi food too.
Mine get Hikari and all the birds they can catch, which is alot lol, they love em. I feed a variety of foods ,they grow like crazy. I am going to agree oxygen and exercise is a must for rapid growth in smaller ponds
Since owning a 10,000 gallon pond and owning koi for over 20 years, I have learned the #1 thing to growing Jumbo koi is having a automatic feeder (koi café feeder) and feeding Sakai-Hikari Food.
Henry Fung In Spring I feed 2-3 times a day and in mid summer I feed 4-5 times a day and feed as much that can be eaten within 10 minutes. In fall I then feed 2-3 a day. I also hand feed in addition 1-2 times a day. So the koi get 5-7 feedings a day depending on the time of year.
The list is long between snacks, and various foods. Hikari; staple, gold, silkworm selects, gold baby, and micro wafers for the pleco. Then there are a various assortment of shrimp, beetles, mealworms, etc for snacks. I also recently added crystal clear rapid growth formula in a small grade. I have a variety of size fish in my pond from three inches up so I try to provide a variety in food size and type. When temps drop I will begin changing their diet. I live in SW Florida so that won't be for awhile though. Their morning feeding is a variety of staple, gold, silkworm, and gold baby. Not all of them, a couple at a time. Afternoon same but I add in snacks. Evening feedings are like the morning again. I am the proud owner of my own vacuum and I've made a special filter so when I vacuum the water is cleaned before it goes back into the pond. I keep the pond pretty clean and the aerator intake just got a nice toothbrush scrub. I do use natural bacteria packets to help keep things down bottom percolating properly. And from time to time a clay based algae treatment when things begin getting gunked up. How am I doing?🤔
I have be told depth can influence growth as well. Feeding sinking food to have them go up and down to increase muscle size what are you options on this? Loving your videos thanks.
Hello Steven, thats a pretty good one! Depth is also important at least 1,80m. I feed only during winter time sinking koi food when it is winter time and the Koi are on the bottom of the pond (less active). Normaly I give them floating Koi pallets, I tell you why. For me when the Koi are at the surface of the water I am able to inspect them when they are eating. Very important to check if the Koi are all healthy.
there are also male koi that grow long and big. they are mostly underrated and get not the support like female koi. a other fact is that especially tosai are often need high proteine, because they grow so fast like you said. the bobycells are based on proteine, so lentgh und volumina depend derictly on the income of proteine. you said that they need space to grow. yeah thats true. big koi need more space. but that is not the main fact. koi submit neurostransmitters in their enviroment. so they can define how large their habitat is. so in fact in our home ponds, we need much freshwater to reduce the amount of neurotransmitters so that the koi think their living place is bigger than it is. and in combination with the other points you mentioned the koi can work on their growingpotential.
Feeded always Takazumi growth. For the next season i am going to try: Probites Summer / Summermix and Chlorrela Hope they will get some length and body. (15M3 on 5 Fishes will keep 8/9Koi Max but only putting 1 every single season.)

I feed mine a mix. Tetra Pond Color Sticks, Hikari Staple Pellets, Tetra Color Flakes, Dried Mealworms, Freeze Dried Brine Shrimp and bread as a snack. My Tosai put on like 6 inches in their first year. I’m going on year #2.
I'm currently using Hikari Staple mixed with Hikari Gold, tho I need to check on the water more often can we use any supplements to for ph level and etc.?
Hello Awob, Hikari is a good choice! It is important to check the water levels very often. Just search on Google how to manage your waterlevels and you will find many many websites with that information. Where do you live?
What breed of koi is at the 2:36 mark? That fish is beautiful! Also, the fish at the end of the video is really pretty. What are they called. Thank you.

Hello Al Bundy (love that name hahah). It is a new Koi variety as you can see in this video. Contact your local Koi dealer for more information about this specific Koi. It will be somewhere between 500 and 1000$ I guess.
