- During the Second World War, there were many acts of resistance against the Nazis especially from within the Nazi-occupied territories that they had gained. When Adolf Hitler launched Operation Barbarossa and the invasion of the Soviet Union, he had already taken large parts of Europe during World War 2. From within countries such as Yugoslavia, groups such as the Partisans emerged to rid the Nazis from their land. The Partisans in particular wished to completely expel the Germans, and they often were involved in brutal acts against their enemy.
One such girl who joined the Partisans was Zinaida Portnova. When she was a young girl, she was moved to northern Belarus for her own safety as the Germans invaded. Whilst staying here the Germans stole her Grandmother's cattle and hit her, and from that moment on she sought revenge on the Nazis. She joined the resistance group and was involved in spying on the enemy, creating weapons, hiding weapons and even huge acts of sabotage. It's estimated that her efforts led to the deaths of 100 German soldiers, however her big plan focussed around poisoning the food of a Wehrmacht garrison. She managed to do so and killed dozens of German soldiers in this way, however she eventually was captured after she was released as she tried the poisoned food.
After being interrogated by the Gestapo, she was brutally beaten and tortured and it was said that Zinaida was blinded during her ordeal. She refused to give over any information, and because of this the Germans drove her into a field and executed her in cold blood. She was just 17 years old. She is remembered alongside Lepa Radic as a teenage girl who gave her life for defeating the Third Reich, Hitler and the Nazis.

When my wife was pregnant 7 years ago, I read about this very brave young woman and we named our daughter Zinaida after her. Today, my Zinaida is 6 years old and nothing would make me more proud then if my daughter stood up to evil the way Ms. Pornova did!

She wasn't executed (that would need a judgment by a court of law, no matter how corrupt) but murdered! A small but significant difference!
Wrong....She was executed by orders of the military. She was not in uniform and conspired to murder/assasinate German soldiers.Under the Geneva convention of that time, this was acceptable in order to stop non uniformed persons from murdering bona-fide soldiers. The Americans did the same as did the British and most other nations. She was very brave but also very foolish and sadly got caught, but as a civilian non combatant she must have known the likely outcome.
You know the more I hear about all of the woman that decided to help in the war efforts, the more I feel that these stories should be told in our history books in schools. I had no idea that there were women that I feel that the war wouldn't have had the outcome it had if not for each and everyone of them. And when I was in school I had no idea that they even existed.. God bless them and RIP..

She told me the story of this young Russian girl when I was very little and explained that it was the reason she wanted me to have that name. I never been in a situation like that in my life and I don't think I am as brave as that young girl was. Yet those were different times! I just hope no country have to endure what the USSR had during that era!

Zoya Kosmedemyanskaya is a known hero in WWII. She was a partisan who was captured by nazis, tortured but refused to give up any information. She was forced to sleep in freezing cold barn and then marched barefooted across the snow to be hanged. Her story is very interesting, if you're looking to do another story about heroes.

I had a grand unkle who sobotaged the germans the entire war. His stories will stay with me mfor the rest of my life. Even though I have no say in this, I Im proud to be the grandson of his brother, my grand father. Also my grand father played part in this world war II history. He barely survived a POW camp in the late 40ties. The true stories I heard where people did all those things to fight their little wars against the big enemy made me feel proud of my ancesters. Their actions made our world free and democratic. Hero's they were! Florimond Catrysse, my grand father. His brother, Kamiel Catrysse. Hero's they were. In loving memory to my grand father and his brother. Respect. I miss you!

There is a similar story about a German teenage girl who joined the resistance and they did make a movie. Its called "Sophie Scholl - The final days". It's a movie that will stay in your mind long after you have watched it. Hope you like subtitles though as its German language only. Well worth watching and happened in real life.

In Greece there was also a teenage heroine named Iro Konstantopoulou who was also 17 years old and she had participated in the Greek Resistance. She was arrested, brutally tortured and finaly executed on September 5, 1944 with 17 bullets in the Kaisariani which was a place of execution of the people of the Greek Resistance.
Not many people, young or old, would have the courage that this girl had.

Most people in the West think the only reason Soviet people fought to the death was because of NKVD but there are tens of thousands of inspiring stories like this that, and they paint a very different picture than makers of Enemy at the gates would have you believe

Well I have read books on German invasion of Russia. I’m sure they didn’t appreciate being killed etc en made during that episode. Can’t see many welcoming them when they are killed. I do recall reading about some welcoming them, but that’s only a small part of the picture. You made it sound like the Germans did the Russians a favour! They did only kill about 20 million of them during WW2.

During war it is normal for armies to sieze supplies, especially food and housing, from the local inhabitants. There is nothing odd or unusual about that.

The resistance in the Nazi occupied territories, were mainly orchestrated by the communist, the Jews and escaped prisoners of war. knew they could find sanctuary in a communist home, this fact has been downplayed by the Western Allies particularly the USA who were absolutely paranoid about communism. The communist resisitance fighters were persicuted and ostracised after the war, former nazi war criminals were promoted to positions of power and the rest is history. Zinda Portnova's should be famous for her heroism, but because she fought with the communist resistence she hes been largely ignored.
Most who survived behind enemy lines were considered likely collaborators, and many were executed by the Soviets - especially those who were not card carrying members of the Soviet Communist Party. Do you think the Russians spend a lot of time in school learning about the Western allies' contribution to the fight against the Nazis? They hardly know of Operation Overlord.

When I was a kid in Soviet Union, I was given a bundle of books that was called pioneers-heroes. Every book was about 50 pages, big fonts and very graphic pictures. She was in one of them. I think could still name all of those kids.

When my youngest daughter turned 12, I asked her what she wanted for her birthday. She thought I was spending too much ($50) on her. Those kids clean the house, do the laundry, help with cooking and so much more.

It blows me away that every person who fought in WW2, was born almost 100 years ago. 100 years ago to me growing up was like Civil War days.
It's a blink of an eye, both my Grand fathers fought and were injured in the first World War.Three of my uncles all in their early 20's were KIA in the second World War two in N.Africa one at Arnhem. My father was blown up/knocked out by a German artillery shell landing close to him, shot twice, once by his own side while training with live ammo and once by a U.S. M.P. He was also a P.O.W. for almost 12 months before he escaped. He was 23 in 1945 when the war ended. He had volunteered in Jan/Feb 1941 and signed on for 20 years, so he wasn't demobbed at the end of the war. I remember meeting my mothers grandmother a few times, she was born in 1864, time is fleeting and fast.
