I am planting some cosmos flowers in my garden in hope that they will bloom in the time of our Lunar New Year holiday in Vietnam about a month and a half from now. This is really helpful, since the last time I grew them they were really tall but produce just a few flowers. Thank you
Hello Seraphina, thanks so much for watching! I hope you get on well with the cosmos and get a few more flowers in the new year. The pinching out should definitely make a difference x
Very pretty and great pollinators!
Thanks for watching! Yes they are great pollinators 🙂 🐝
Thank you so much for the wonderful sharing of your flower growing knowledge. I grow flowers in New Zealand and am finding your flower journey completely inspirational. With much gratitude, janet 😊
Hello Janet, thanks so much for watching and I hope you are enjoying seeing all the flowers here while it is winter for you. I know I love seeing all the flowers grown in New Zealand when it’s the middle of our winter!
I came across your channel today. What a joy it is to listen to your tips for growing cosmos. This Fall, I plan to start cool plants by seed. I'm in Zone 8 in the USA. I'm going to start out with Cosmos, Larkspur, Love in a mist, and Snapdragons by seed and see how it goes. It's probably too late in the season to start, so I'm going to work my soil and maybe direct sow my seeds this fall. Our winters Zone 8 in South Carolina are not very harsh, so maybe I'll try direct sowing this fall, so by spring, hopefully I'll have a nice spread of cut flowers.
Hello and thanks so much for watching 😊 Those flowers sound like a lovely starting point for next season. It is pretty late now to get any flowers from seed unless it was things like the procut sunflowers so you are right it is worth waiting until fall and then starting some hardy cool flowers off then. I have a couple of videos on my channel about fall plantings of cool flowers if that is helpful. The only ones I wouldn’t start off from seed in fall are the cosmos as they won’t get through the winter. Good luck with getting some lovely flowers next spring/summer.
Just sown two different cosmos seeds, can't wait for the summer! Thank you for great advice
Good luck growing your cosmos this year, just love this flower. I am going to start those seeds off beginning of April and must remember to grow far more purity this year as last year I somehow missed this and concentrated on the pinks and didn’t have enough white.
@@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm O Dear! Did I do it to early? I tought I'm late... Do you know how long it takes for them to bloom? Maybe I'll sow couple of more in April...
I've got two different seed packages, one is a mix of white and pink, the other all light pink with fluffy petals...
Some (from the first mix) germinated and I've noticed that most of the stems are light only few are reddish-does it mean they are going to be pink? Or it has got nothing to do with the colour of the flowers?
Thank you for your reply! You've got lovely farm over there👍🏻💕🌺🌷
@@arli4406 it takes about 12-14 weeks for my cosmos to flower depending on the weather. They germinate and grow very fast so can get a bit leggy if planted early and still can’t plant them outside because it’s too cold. So not too early if you can keep them frost free and enough light to not go leggy. But I would always start mine in April to reduce this happening for me x
Looking forward to next weeks video on flowers between spring and summer, great idea
Thanks, will look forward to doing that next week.
Your cosmos look so healthy. X
Thanks so much 😊
New subscriber.
Thanks for that tip on pinching out cosmos plants Catherine.
Looking forward to lot's of flowers.
My first year in growing from seed.
👏👏👏👏😀👍
Thanks for watching! The cosmos are looking really good this year so far. Trying to make sure they have lots of support today as thundery showers forecast. Good luck with growing your cosmos and thanks for subscribing.
Thanks, my first try and I’m excited!
Thanks for watching 😊 I hope you get lots of lovely cosmos flowers this year.
As someone who also lives in Scotland, this was useful info as i'm on my first Cosmos grow this year.
Thanks for watching. Good luck growing your cosmos this year. I have found it a really reliable flower to grow in Scotland.
only discovered cosmos this year. thanks for the info. cheers
Thanks for watching 🙂 cosmos are a great summer flower to grow.
Super video.
Thanks so much, I am really glad you enjoyed finding out how I pinch out cosmos for more flowers.
Very helpful thank you! I am trying the cupcake variety this year so I will try this method.
Thanks for watching. It’s amazing how much of a difference pinching out makes. There are so many lovely varieties of cosmos to grow aren’t there? I hope you enjoy growing cupcake. My favourite from last year was apricotta.
@@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm I'm growing Apricotta and Apricot Lemonade together this year!
Very nice video
Thank you very much for watching 🙂 I’m glad you enjoyed it.
Great video. Pretty lady.
Thanks for watching 🙂
Very nice video 👍
Thanks so much, glad you enjoyed it!
Thank you. That was helpful.
Thanks for watching and I hope you get lots of cosmos flowers this year.
Thanks you, I will do this to my Cosmos! Can we start new plant with cosmos cutting? Like the snapdragon?
Thanks for watching! Yes you can take cuttings from cosmos to start new plants. I probably wouldn’t pinch the cuttings out at this stage in the year as pinching out stalls the flowering by a couple of weeks and by the time the cuttings took you would be well into the growing season and wanting to get flowers before the frosts came.
Thank you for a lovely informative video.
Thanks so much for watching 😊
Thanks Catherine, I'm going to do that with mine. Any tips on hydrangeas? Many thanks.
Hi Kim, thanks for watching this weeks video, I haven’t been able to get hydrangeas through a Scottish winter yet 🥶
Hello Beautiful Soul.
I have some cosmos plants in my garden in £Weiloi Village* Meghalaya India. it will grow bloom in October November.
that's not very important.
You are the cause of my time to watch your video.
Thank you for watching my video 🙂 That is interesting to hear about your cosmos growing in India and coming into bloom October/November. Can you grow flowers all year round or do you have a main growing season?
@@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm geographical area → heaviest rainfall in the world. flowers can easily decay of excess water. it germinate in the spring time and gradually grow in slow duration till October November, bloom for two weeks and dry to self seedlings for the next year.
Thank you for this
Thanks for watching 🙂
I bought some dwarf cosmos and they grew to be 36" tall and started falling over. I guess even the dwarf cosmos need to be pinched! charlotte, north carolina, usa zone 8a
Hi, thanks for watching 🙂 Goodness not so dwarf in the end! You will have to let us know this year if pinching helps your dwarf ones.
I am in Florida and decided to begin Cosmos from seed in pots. When they got about 12 inches tall after pinching I decided to put them into the ground. Meanwhile a couple days later I noticed two of the 6 plants were cut off by 8 inches, decapitated and leafless. Next thing you know all of them day after day were victim to the same thing. Chopped off and only a stem 5 inches remains. What do you think could have done this and do you think they will grow back?
Oh no that’s so disheartening when you have spent your time growing them on so well. Here if that happened I would be thinking rabbits as they have done similar to mine in the past before our fencing went up. Could it be something similar in your garden in Florida? If they have left any sets of leaves then yes they could grow back but if they have sheared off all the leaves and just left the stem I don’t think they would. I hope you have some survivors.
@@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm Thank you kindly. They look like they are not gonna make it through. I have 6 foot fences so no rabbits for sure in the backyard. I forgot to mention the weird part. The day I noticed them chopped I did not see any remains hanging around, "Stems, leaves etc. Then a few days after that I noticed laying near the crime scene lays the stems. Something brought them back and played them near the stems coming out of the ground. Weird right? Yea I know. From morning until sundown the only animals we see in the backyard are squirrels and birds.
Thanks for all the helpful videos about growing flowers! I’m new to growing flowers and I love cosmos. Can I ask how and why you set up the plastic trellis the way you do for the flowers?
Hello, thanks so much for watching 😊 Cosmos are lovely! The plastic trellis is the support I have for the plants. We live in quite an exposed spot and it can get windy so the cosmos stems can snap easily. The support netting laid horizontally for the plants to grow through gives them support to stay upright no matter what the weather. I just hammer in tree stakes at approx 2 metre intervals down the bed and lay the pea and bean netting over stretched quite tight to provide a framework to grow through. I have a video on my channel about support netting for a bit more info x
A couple of questions.
1) can the cutting be propagated?
2) the seeds have been grown in a pot and have randomly sprouted. They are not evenly spaced. Should I do some thinning or leave them as they are?
Hello, thanks so much for watching. Yes you should be able to take stem cuttings from the cosmos for propagation. Cosmos can grow fairly quickly so if they have randomly sprouted and some are close together I would thin them to prevent competition for light and nutrients.
Maybe a silly question - I bought a chocolate cosmos plant that is quite lanky and already has one flower. Would I be able to pinch it at this stage to make it stronger and branch for more blooms? Thank you for the informative video!
Yes you could as chocolate cosmos is a cut and come again variety and pinching should help it bulk out and become sturdier. I love chocolate cosmos but unfortunately have never been able to get them through the winter here so have to treat it as an annual. Thanks for watching.
The video is very helpful, thank you so much! I have had planted cosmos this spring and now at the end of August there are many growing and some of them have grown huge! However there has been only 1 or 2 flowers in all that area!
I thought of cutting it, and I did cut them a few days ago, in hopes it will promote flowers. Did not cut them too much though.
My questions are will new flowers apper on stems that have never had any flowers on them? Will cutting help? Is it too late to obtain a lot of flowers? My climate is mediterranean so warm weather usually continues well into autumn. So maybe there is hope for more flowers? Thanks again!
Hello thanks so much for watching my cosmos video. You sound like you have some really great growing cosmos. Sometimes if the soil is very rich or you have fed the cosmos? It results in a lot of leafy growth and few flowers. Could this be the problem? Cutting it back will promote the plant to produce new stems but again whether just lots of green stems or flowers could depend on the soil. It sounds as though with your climate there is time enough yet for flowers so I will keep my fingers crossed for you.
@@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarmThank you very much for reply and it is possible that soil has something to do with it although I did not add any fertiliser, however maybe someone added it before planting. The cutting did have some effect, one of them has now has about 4 buds, some are still leaves though but I still hope. I am glad I saved some seeds for the next year and I will choose the position more wisely!
Thank you again for reply! It is really helpful!
Your very welcome. It is always difficult to work out why things have happened in the garden when there are a few different things that could be affecting the plants. I hope you get lots of flowers next year.
For your netting how large are each square?
Hi, thanks for watching. The netting is 6 inch squared.
I live in the desert and they are like 5 inches and start blooming should I pinch out the flowers?
If the plant is looking leggy and not very bushy then yes I would pinch out to get some extra side shoots growing for more flowers later on.
Nice video.Do you feed the cosmos.Iam here in dublin in Rep of Ireland I feed them with tomato feed once fortnight.
Thank you 😊 I don’t feed the cosmos. I amend the soil in the beds each year with home made compost at the start of the season and only feed the roses, sweet peas, zinnias, dahlias and chrysanthemums. The other annuals including cosmos I don’t feed. Thanks for watching.
Different country in horticultural.
Hi Can you make one about pinching out Foxgloves please?
Hello, Foxgloves are flowers that I have never grown as a cut flower as the demand for them hasn’t been there locally from florists and I haven’t done large enough display arrangements to use them myself. I tend to have a few self seeded ones in the garden that I can use if I have the odd request for them but have never pinched them out x
Loved the video!!!. Can I do the same with Zinnias?? I also grow Maltese cross could they be pinched? Do you only pinch the top stem or do you pinch the side ones too?? Thankyou Marianna Watson.
Hi Marianna, thanks for watching 🙂 Yes you can pinch out zinnia’s too. I haven’t grown Maltese cross before but I think you can pinch them as well. When I pinch cosmos I just pinch the main central stem with the growing tip rather than any side branches x
Hello , i planted 7inch cosmos plant yesterday and it is doing well today so i pinched cosmos but now i m worried will it dry ,coz after planting yesterday evening today it is looking fresh so i did that 😢
Hello how is your cosmos looking now after pinching, they take a little time to recover from pinching but should have got away and be growing really well for you now?
@@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm they look little dull now but there is no difference in leaf nd stem as they are same as they were before atleast they survived i guess
How are your cosmos getting on now?
@@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm they bloomed very well and are blooming all my plants are healthy and good
Hi, thanks for the video. if my cosmos has already started to flower, is it too late to punch out?
Hi thanks for watching, no it’s not too late to pinch it, just go for the main growing tip. You might lose that flower if that part has a bud but it will mean you get more flowers in a few weeks time.
@@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm thank you so much, will give that a go!
My cosmos seedling has only 2 set of leaves and its stem is getting too long , how to pinch a plant with only 2 set of leaves ?
Hello, thanks for watching. Yes that is too early to pinch, you really need to be able to leave two sets of leaves at least after pinching. What I would do is repot the seedlings burying the stem. I have a video on this about what to do with leggy seedlings that may help. How To Fix Leggy Flower Seedlings | They Can Be Rescued!

I have bushy greenery on my cosmos but no flowers can you advise please
Hello Deirdre, thanks for watching? Couple of questions, are you feeding the cosmos? Have you pinched it back at all?
❤
What variety is depicted?
Hello, I think the cosmos you are seeing is fizzy rose picotee which is so pretty.
I do not get exactly where to pinch and this is just trimming?
Thanks for watching 🙂 pinching you are just taking that main stem out just above where you have a set of leaves. You are looking to count up about 3-4 pairs of leaves from the base of the plant and pinch the stem out just above a pair of leaves there. It is essentially trimming plant back to encourage more growth.
Just take that "tip" you cut off and stick it in the dirt and voila new plants from the clippings!
It’s great you can multiply your plants from the pinched out bits so easily. Thanks for watching 😊
Mam i want cosmos seeds how much
I have never collected my own cosmos seeds yet but you can buy seed packets of them easily for £2-3 a packet from garden centres or online shops.
@@cloudberryflowers-flowerfarm ok tq
Followed your advice last spring….the results have been outstanding! It’s the 1st of November, and my cosmos bush is huge, with literally hundreds of buds waiting to bloom( a nice number of flowers have managed!) One good day of sun will, I’m sure result in a fabulous display. I’ ll take a pic and send it to you.
Do you have email address ?
Hello Harry, that is fantastic your cosmos has grown so well this year. Fingers crossed the frost stays away for a bit longer so you can enjoy all those flowers. I would love to see a picture of your cosmos thank you. My email is catherine@cloudberryflowers.co.uk
