Unless the boiler sections themselves leak, I won't replace a cast iron boiler. The jury is also out on these wall hung units, kid of like the way MP feels about tankless water heaters. I don't want a wall hung unit after speaking with techs and guys at plumbing supply shops, they just don't seem to have the reliability yet and you won't get 30 years out of them IMO. These old boilers should go 30 to 50 years without too much trouble, especially a gas boiler; Oil will last fine too but needs more servicing. Her circulator and aquastat were working fine, why did you even mention them?? She needs a pressure regulator, some 3/4" black pipe redone and the pressure relief, and probably an expansion tank someday, that's about 200$ in parts.
$2500 in repairs and she is good for 15yrs.. it will probably outlive the Bosch and with negligible energy savings it doesn’t justify the replacement.. just my thought

Repair the existing boiler. Boiler looks to be in good shape. It being a hot water system with proper maintenance it should last a long time. Appearance of the existing system doesn't actually justify a reason for a new system
I think the only service the other guy did, was to write them a bill. They certainly didn't address any of the long-term leaks and condition issues of the boiler or water heater. I didn't notice, but was there adequate combustion air for furnace and water heater when the door is closed? Why all the condensate leaking from the flue pipe? Chimney too big and cold and unlined or no cap on top and rainwater coming down flue pipe? There might be some 20 yr old boilers that should get fixed, but that one had too many obvious present and potential future issues. Thanks for the video.

I had the service Guy come out and does it need check valves installed I suggested they have not called me back and they installed it 2001. So it's been going on for that long I've been using the two units as single family home now it's time to get tenants I need this fixed I wish you lived close to Chicago.

If it was me I would take you up on that
Fix the issues. That boiler has a decade plus of life left minimum. Plus it has very low cost of ownership on the maintenance side of the cost to operate. She may as well marry you if she gets a wall hung. Sell her a storage tank with an internal heat exchanger an and scrap the hot water tank. Move the boiler to where the tank sits now and put an dimensionally appropriate tank to the left of it. Also she still gets some added storage space as bonus and a reliable system.
Lets face it most people know no more about their heating system than turn up the stat for heat, cleaning , maintenance leaks, never look at the monster in the basement until their feet are cold.
Very True. People come into my utility room and say "Oh you have a new boiler" well no, it will actually be 15 years old next season but it looks brand new. It's clean as can be, when it do the annual on it I wipe everything down, vac all around it, even painted the iron pipe black. Don't stuff your boiler into a tiny closet with no/limited access and then slowly pile up junk around it.
@@PipeDoctor i did one last week for a couple, and it opened up so much space for them, got rid of a old boiler, and water heater. And the Alta is so easy to install, and easy to convert to propane.
