The d:vote line is the same super Cardioid /interference tube technology microphone for all instruments. They do come in two sensitivities Lo Sens for Drums/Trumpet, and Hi Sens for all other instruments. The clips are available for all instruments. Simply add the instrument letter at the end of the 4099 to get the right clip. For example 4099G is for guitar. See more on www.dpamicrophones.com

This review answered one of my main questions, that is; the cable from the mic to XLR. It seems to cheap, but after watching your video a couple of times I feel better. The concern I had was with the XLR end of the cable has a belt clip. How to remove the clip is a challenge. I also heard DPA has made a thicker cable. I am going to research how to purchase that item as well.
I have used this microphone live many times and I have always loved it on stage. And now I really don´t understand
why I´ve never used it in my studio. So thank you, I am now using it and I must say it is beautiful sounding! :D
I have taken it a bit further and use it together with an room mic (Aea n22) to get som more room tone when I record my acoustic guitar or violin. And then blend them together. Thank you Lewin for showing me this!!
+Music Production - Snorre Busch Could the 4099 be used attached to the guitar in the studio and get professional sounding recordings providing that guitar and player are good??? I'm considering one for my studio recordings. I have two AT4050's I use now. Could the 4099 outperform the 4050 in a small studio??

With no doubt. I´ve used it on all my latests recordings. But I blended this microphone with a condenser mic. You don´t have to do it this way, but to get more of the room sound I did it this way :)

+Celticsaint777 Well I don´t think you can compare these different microphones. Firstly the DPA mic is mounted to the guitar, so you will get a constant performance. The guitar doesn't move around in front of the mic. And it also doesn't capture the room your in so much. With a large diaphragm you often place the mic further away from the source to get a more balanced recording. Then you also get some vibe from the room you are recording in. So I would say they are very different. But what I have found is when I blend the to together I really get a sound that is amazing :D But also when you listen to the video audio above, you can hear it is a great mic on its own too. So quality wise I'd say this mic is fighting there side by side with the big guys. I'm going to buy more of these mic's to my studio for sure :)

I just saw that DPA also offers an extension gooseneck that would allow the mic to be positioned about 2-3" farther away from the guitar than the standard gooseneck does. I think that would make it have an even better option like what you might do with a high quality small diaphragm mic. It seems like the 4099 is the fool proof acoustic guitar mic for the studio.
Particularly impressive on the guitar demo...just perfect...it's doing something that I always want from a guitar recording...but usually never get. Liquid and flowing, not too bright and dry...yet still tight and punchy
Have you ever tired your stereo pair of 4099s together on the acoustic guitar? Either left/right of the sound hole, above/below the sound hole, x/y from a single point, or even with one clipped to the headstock?
I'd love to see you do a video demo what kind of stereo field you can achieve with these!

Thanks for your review. Until recently I was using a DPA4061 (d:screet) on my fiddle for performance but just upgraded to the d:vote 4099V and so far like it a lot--think the sound is quite a bit better than the 4061. The weak spot on the 4061 seems to be the mini-dot connector, which on mine eventually came loose from the mic wire and had to be re-terminated at the factory service center (because it requires a fancy tool that costs somewhat more than the mic...). Having had that experience I cringed when you yanked on the D:VOTE's cable but it sounds like they've upgraded both the connectors and the cable! I still won't yank on mine though!
That is very disheartening to hear about your DPA4061. DPA mics are great. But they certainly fall in the higher end of the cost category. With such high prices and low cost competitors around, they should not fail under any circumstance. Good that they have upgraded to these new cables
It started having problems after about 6 years of moderate use, but other musicians I know who use 4061s have never had this problem so maybe I just got a bad one. DPA seems to have solved an issue that probably contributed to the failure with a new connector design that doesn't require extra tightening with a tool. Also, on the 4099 you can replace the whole cable assembly if anything goes bad, which isn't an option with the 4061 since the cable is integrated. (Cost of a 4099 replacement cable is less than what I paid to repair the 4061!)

That piano sounds awesome, reminds me of Neil Young after the Goldrush album sounds. What kind of upright is that?
Also, is the Shure SM7b vocal mic turned on when you're strumming the guitar or is it off and we're only hearing the DPA 4099??

Hey man. I really liked the video. Very informative. I did't even think putting two of these mics on a piano would sound so good... But it did! The guitar and mandolin also sounded good. I have a question. You mentioned you recorded it with your Focusrite Saffire Pro 40. Did you use the pre-amps with 48v phantom power from the Saffire or how did you record? I saw in a video by DPA the 4099 required 48v, but then in the description they mentioned only 5v provided by a wireless pocket transmitter, unless you use the Phantom Power adaptor? Looking to get this for violin. Studio and live usage. Thanks in advance.
Dirk Claassen hey there. In this one I was only using the pro 40, no external preamp’s or anything.
And yes, the 4099’s can run on either the phantom power from the board for those adapters that you mentioned.

I've plugged mine direct into a loudbox, its a good combo, and will make a huge improvement over the K&K mini alone
does the DPA 4099 have a lot of self noise from being very small diaphragms? Also, do you think this mic mounted to the guitar close, can offer professional results in the studio? Your video sounds great, but is it as good as a high quality mic on a stand a foot and a half away??
+Celticsaint777 No they are NOT noises at all. Yes you can get studio quality recordings.

How is the feedback on stage with a mandolin feeding thru a DI? We try to mostly use condenser mics for our acoustic bluegrass band, but sometimes I have to plug in using a K&K installed in my mando and run it thru an LR Baggs DI and a compression and EQ pedal, but I hate the sound. I'm thinking of getting this mic, but worried I'd still have feedback on stage like condensers do sometimes. Thanks!
It's not bad at all, but it does help to have a good sound guy. My favorite no feedback mandolin pickup is made by Schertler. I have an older one, but it still sounds amazing.
@@GaragebandandBeyond thanks! yeah .. i had a Schertler. It was ok, but like you say in this vid, very hard to get a good mando sound with a pickup. Think I'm going to get one of these and give it a go.

Yeah, maybe I'm misunderstanding.... I am aware that there are several types (also a universal one) which I have checked out online. That's why I am asking which Type you used on these demos, or whether you got a piano one for the Piano, a guitar one for the guitar, etc.

I have a DPA 4099 clip-on guitar microphone but the clip keeps falling off my guitar while I'm performing causing a huge feedback when it hit's the floor. I think the clip is a poor design. Anyone else have this problem?
If it keeps falling off, then you're not putting it on properly. Or perhaps just not in the right place.
Try putting it on the opposite side of the neck that you have it on now.
I already tried putting it on the other side of my guitar neck. It keeps falling off.
I was gigging with mine clipped to the bottom of my archtop at one point, and i did have it fall a couple of times if it was bumped. Since then I discovered that the cello mount attaches to the frequensator tailpiece perfectly and never had a problem since. The ideal sweetspot being just north of the bottom of the F hole.
When I use it on a flat top, it goes on top bout pointed to the neck/soundhole juncture. This video has it hanging off the bottom, which can be a problem. Its more likely to get bumped by a leg the way he has it mounted, with gravity working against it. Still, if you bump the mount its going to fall off unless you further secure it.
I usually sit down when I'm using it live, if I were standing, I would probably use a strip of electrical tape to double secure the mount to the side of the instrument and to keep it from falling to the floor should get knocked loose, that's not going to hurt finish, if its removed post gig.
I love mine, gig it 2-7 times a week. It can handle enough sound pressure to cut over a sane drummer without feedback if its used correctly. Its of course more challenging for a soundguy who is inexperienced, than a piezo would be, but it sounds like the instrument, just louder. Especially on archtops. Wow.
