The spine consists of vertebrae, or bones, that are stacked upon each other. In between every set of vertebrae, there is an intervertebral disc, or spinal disc, which serves specific functions. The main parts of the disc include a soft, gel-like interior called the nucleus and a tough outer membrane called the annulus. Discs are made of water, collagen fibers, and proteoglycans.
The primary functions of discs are to provide spinal flexibility. Healthy, hydrated discs enhance spinal flexibility, while deteriorated, degenerated, or bulging discs reduce flexibility. Children typically have greater spinal flexibility due to a higher vascular supply to their discs. Discs also provide structure and spacing for nerves and tissues, cushioning between vertebrae to prevent friction and act as shock absorbers. Without discs, the spine would be one solid bone, severely limiting movement and flexibility.
One key sign of unhealthy discs is spinal stiffness. Bulging discs occur when the inner nucleus bulges through the annulus towards the outside, typically to the left, right, or back. This bulging can encroach on the space within the spinal canal, pressing on tissues and leading to radicular pain and neurological pain. Bulging discs can also cause stiffness and pain when joints don't move properly.
The main cause of disc bulging is spinal misalignment. Think of an ice cream sandwich: if you squeeze it on one side, the ice cream (representing the disc) bulges out on the other side. Spinal misalignment leads to abnormal weight bearing, which causes one disc to deteriorate and degenerate faster than others, similar to an unaligned car tire.
Spinal misalignment can lead to degeneration, which can be exacerbated by lifestyle factors such as obesity, a sedentary lifestyle, poor posture, alcohol consumption, smoking, repetitive lifting, and bad ergonomics. This combination of misalignment, degeneration, and poor lifestyle choices can lead to degenerative disc disease. The initiation of degenerative disc disease is often associated with an alignment problem.
As discs become dehydrated and brittle (a condition called disc desiccation), they are more likely to herniate and cause more stiffness and pain. This creates a cycle of worsening symptoms unless intervention occurs. The first step in treating a disc issue is to determine the underlying cause, which often involves examining overall spinal health and alignment to identify asymmetrical weight bearing.
Lifestyle modifications can help alleviate some symptoms, but most cases require a combination of physical therapy, chiropractic care, and other conservative management strategies to realign the spine and help discs regenerate and heal. Surgical approaches may involve cutting part of the disc or removing it altogether and fusing the vertebrae, which can lead to further problems with adjacent discs.
The best long-term outcome typically involves conservative treatments that realign the spine and address bulging discs without surgery. Leading a spine-healthy lifestyle is crucial for disc health and hydration. If spinal misalignment occurred due to trauma or injury, lifestyle changes alone are insufficient. Specific treatments are necessary to restore normal alignment.
At the Scoliosis Reduction Center, we specialize in realigning spines with bulging discs. Almost every scoliosis case we treat has associated bulging discs, and our treatments focus on addressing both conditions effectively.
