White port (wine) and lemon juice was a very popular fad drink in S California in the early to mid 1950s. So popular that two different R&B groups released two different songs on the subject at almost the same time in 1955; "WPLJ" by The Four Deuces, and "White Port and Lemon Juice" by The Bel-Aires (which is every bit as good as WPLJ).
Fast forward to late 1970 and NYC radio station WABC, along with six others across the country owned by ABC, was preparing for a format change from an automated rock format labeled "Love" that was the was the same for each station, to a live and local freeform underground rock format. For a variety of reasons, ABC requested new call letters for all their FM stations. Unfortunately (actually fortunately), the FCC mixed things up and assigned WABC's new name to one of the others. The president of ABC's FM radio division himself came up with WPLJ after listening to "Burnt Weenie Sandwich".
Edit: A quick check on The Google shows that WPLJ debuted on Valentines Day 1971, which in retrospect is the obvious choice given the previous format name. I imagine there was a lot of media hype in the lead-up to that change.
Thanks for the history!
Was a zappa fan since 1968....saw him 36 times. Musical genius..and my favorite guitar player.
No longer? Are you deceased?
This is the opening track to the album Burnt Weeny Sandwich which both opens and closes with covers of Frank's beloved '50s doo-wop songs. That's the bread of the sandwich. The meat--or burnt weeny--is a spellbinding set of Frank's intricate and unique instrumental music.
Listen to micheal... he explained it 100%
@Zolar Czakl I also enjoy a BWS every now and then.
Yes, those call letters for the former WABC NY radio station were changed because of Zappa's recording of WPLJ (white port and lemon juice). Not a Zappa tune, btw. About the song, Zappa conceded admiringly that he could not have written a song any more absurd. Finally, this song and the last song on the album, were not written by Zappa, both old school doo-wop, which Zappa loved. The rest of the album is instrumental, true Zappa, an experiment in genres, dynamics, and polyrhythms. The music has an old-country, European feel, often very quaint, even whimsical, one of my all-time favorite Zappa albums. Miss ya much, maestro.
This song is pretty faithful to the original 1955 version. And the 'P" is the Port. White Port was a brand of wine in the '50's. I may still be around today but I wouldn't know.
It is Porto (Port in English) (Portuguese fortified wine) A bit like Sherry. It's still around, at least in Europe. I prefer red port though.
@@stevedotwood I have only tried the port wine cheese.
The New York radio station WPLJ took its name from this song, but not from Zappa's cover.
🤯
zappa really loved the doo wap, we find it at all times of his long career !
White, Port and Lemon Juice. This song inspired the name of the NYC radio station when it switched over to rock. The song is actually a cover of a 1956 4-Deuces song. I once called up the radio station and asked the DJ why they never play their namesake song, and he told me that they couldn't play it because of the stereotypical Chicano voices in the last part of the song. The song is actually a cover of a 4-Deuces song, but without the Chicano bit.
The Bel-Aires did a a version of White Port and Lemon Juice in 1955, but the lyrics are different.
I got a woman, stay drunk all the time.
I got a woman, stay drunk all the time.
Every time I see her she's high off of white port wine.
A-Give me white port [and lemon juice]. 4x
Get me high-igh of of white port wine.
All that wine is gone [I want some more]. 4x
All that wine, all that wine is gone.
A-Give me wine, wine, wine.
All the time, time, time.
Give me wine, wine, wine.
All the time, time, time.
'Cause when I get it,
I feel so god darn fine.
Give me wine, wine, wine.
All the time, time, time.
'Cause when I get it,
I feel so god darn fine.
WBAB FM Babylon ,L.I. was my classic Rock station playing,on occasion,Zappa. 1975ish. Anyone remember Bernie Bernard? She always referred to Zappa as "the genius of music".
White Port and Lemon Juice.
Frank did it all
WPLJ
Frank Zappa
I say WPLJ, really taste good to me
WPLJ, won't you take a drink with me
Well, it's a good good wine
It really make you feel so fine
(So fine, so fine, so fine)
I went to the store when they opened up the door
I said, "Please please please gimme some more"
White Port & Lemon Juice,
White Port & Lemon Juice,
White Port & Lemon Juice,
Ooh what it do to you!
You take the bottle, you take the can
Shake it up fine, you get a good good wine.
White Port & Lemon Juice,
(Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah...)
White Port & Lemon Juice,
White Port & Lemon Juice,
Ooh what it do to you!
The W is the White,
The P is the Port,
The L is the Lemon,
The J is the Juice
White Port & Lemon Juice,
White Port & Lemon Juice,
White Port & Lemon Juice,
Ooh what it do to you!
Well I feel so good, I feel so fine
I got plenty lemon, I got plenty wine
White Port & Lemon Juice,
White Port & Lemon Juice,
I said White Port & Lemon Juice,
Ooh what it do to you!
My first thought was... I didn't know Frank did a song about the radio station. Lol
🤣
"P" stands for Port ... white Port Wine
"Burnt Weenie Sandwich" was the sixth Mothers LP, and the 9th overall for Zappa. I had all of the previous releases, but my first listen to BWS was still a transformative experience. I always say I have no absolute Zappa favorites, but if you held a gun to my head, I would, on most days, choose "Burnt Weenie Sandwich" for LP, and "Little House I Used to Live In" from said album for top song.
Trivia #1: Much of the artwork for Zappa in the earlier years was created by Cal Schenkel. The BWS cover was originally intended for an album by avant-garde jazz saxophonist (and other winds) Eric Dolphy that Zappa was putting together. When that project was scuttled, Zappa decided to use the artwork for BWS. Zappa was a big Dolphy fan, and paid homage to him in "The Eric Dolphy Memorial Barbecue" from "Weasels Ripped My Flesh".
Trivia #2: "WLPJ" was also released as a single, with "My Guitar Wants to Kill Your Mama" from Weasels as the B-side.
I loved the cover of this album so much that I commissioned a graphic re-creation of it from Calvin himself, without the lettering. It adorns my wall to this day.
For the last 43 years I was under the mistaken impression that it was "White poured in Lemon Juice" - thanks to your followers here I finally am set straight! Great song, thanks for the reaction guys.
Yeah, thanks to them ☺️! Thanks for watching James!
Someone has to put up Valerie to complete the bookend from this album.
We all know Frank loved doo wop.
Perhaps, The closer you are, and, Go cry on somebody else's shoulder, would be a good reaction.
Frank loved doo whop. I'd love to see you guys react to some songs from the Ruben and the Jets album. Very underrated album of fun songs.
They did "stuff up the cracks", look it up
actually, you will discover that it is very close to the original. Just like Stranded in the Jungle (1956)... which is the first rap song. Frank did a cover of that in 1976. Also faithful to the original.
If this is Frank singing you can tell the changes that happen when his larynx was crushed in the London assault...Frank had a reasonable voice prior to the accident..
it is Frank.... and you can definitely hear the difference
This is a sneakily great Zappa album. Holiday in Berlin! Please Peter K.
too much Zappa not enough time.
@@bwana-ma-coo-bah425 You're not wrong.
white port n lemon juice ...
Port is (Porto) a fortified wine from Portugal, a bit similar to Sherry. There's a white and a red version. Personally I like the red version. Sandeman porto (unintentional plug) is the most popular Port & Sherry brand, at least in Europe.
Thanks for the info Steve!
Nice start of the terrific album Burnt Weeny Sandwich, but do not stop. This one is followed by the most outstanding avant-garde music I know., so I heartly recommend it... What you miss here, except the P, is that this one is a cover version of Dobard/McDaniels
always loved that little song. bop doo wop. White Port & Lemon Juice. The original was by the Four Deuces: ruclips.net/video/JJiyMC1xhDs/видео.html
Thank you thank you so much for that link
Thanks Steve!

Oh my god that was one of the first songs I ever heard Frank Savado and I thought it was so corny I thought I was so hip way back in that did 72 but then it slowly grew on me and I really love watching seafood graffiti but that’s another story Cuz I’m already involved anyway besides that this is the first song of an album that I heard Frank Zappa and I thought oh I already mentioned John Thomas to work with captain Beefheart right and lived in our valley and all that crap and Frank Zappa lived in the olive Valley here with me never mind so John Thomas was in the band no pre-1972 and I hung around with him and he introduced me to Frank Zappa which at first I thought was stupid
But it’s slowly slowly growing me became became became an obsession and eight across France Epix Paradis and there’s so many different genres and I was just a dumb kid but John Thomas expanded my mind introducing me to Frank Zappa
& Captain Beefheart
Frank Zappa not Frank Salvato I’m sorry I got speech to text I
My fingers to big to type
Yeah right port and lemon juice was a mixture they used back then before for my time
Seafood Graffiti, ha ha ha!

Yes yes yes yes yes so I heard for say her first heard the song one first came out I didn’t know it was been done by another group
Thanks!
Part of "The Tiny American Songbook" by F.Z.
Want you buy some candys...?
This is one of my favourite albums. The meat of the serious music sandwiched between the two doowop songs. You need to react to some of the meaty numbers on the album
RECORD FACT: The original 4 Deuces "WPLJ" recording has a serious tape flaw* in almost every copy I've heard (45, 78, even on CD), during this lyric...
"The W is the white, the P is the (dropout/thump)ort..."
*I know this because digitally restoring 'hard case' old media recordings are kind of my thing.
Yeah☺️, that’s why we just couldn’t figure that word out! Cool job DJH! Thanks for the info and thanks for watching!

Hope you're learning by now that Frank Zappa, being from Palmdale, grew up around and wanted to be part of the local scenes with the Mexicans and Black kids. Did you know Frank was in a "colored" band and they were harassed? That's Palmdale for you. Anyway, you can see the influence the Mexican kids had on Frank. The way Roy Estrada (bassist) is just talking bullshit in Spanish at the end is what you'll hear all over Los Angeles, Chicano/a culture!. Good stuff. If you can't tell, I'm one of those Mexican kids from LA.
Thanks for sharing!
Wish they sold this stuff in the can... but anyway one of the few times Zappa covers some other guys on one of his album (First recording and first release by The 4 Deuces - June 1955 / July 1955)...
So much for "You'll never hear surf music again." But Frank?! Okay. Didn't have much time or taste for this strain of Frank's ouevre back when...too retro, but wotevs
port. As in, wine
Here is the original WPLJ in case ya wondering ruclips.net/video/JJiyMC1xhDs/видео.html
Thanks!
Due Due
Tell ya you about the
PP
I think Frank would’ve liked that comment
😂
Burnt Weenie Sandwich is such a great FZ album. Not sure you've done much from this one till now.
I’ve been voting for BWS for a long time. But apparently no one cares. Too bad; it’s a great album!
lol.. porn?? No, White Port and Lemon Juice... porn...lmao
☺️
WTF is this?
