Coin Collector Finds $250,000+ Ike Dollar Prototype & Sells At Auction: The First Eisenhower Dollar

- Talk about a true rarity! A coin collector and dealer cherrypicked this Eisenhower Dollar for $10 at a coin show in 2008, and after a long process of authentication, research, conservation, and more, finally sold at a 2022 Heritage Auctions sale about a week ago. There have been two more discovered since - all purchased for less than $25 - reminding us that a sharp eye and a little (lot of) luck can lead to some staggering payouts in the coin collecting hobby. This is one of the first Ike Dollars ever to have been made… learn all about it in this video that I am so excited to feature.

I found this coin while I was specifically looking for design transistions. Namely, a 1971-S Business Strike with a Type 2 Proof Reverse. With my shamefully poor louping capabilities, I thought that this one hit the mark.
The credit for the Prototype designation goes to the IKE Group with Rob Ezerman heading up the research.
After the coin was sold to David Frohman, he put a LOT more in depth research and study into it than I could ever afford. Do David deserves the credit for the final selling price.
Again, thank you for a Great Presentation since this coin just did not get the attention it so deserves.
I have one 1971-S in silver my father had it since 1986 and he gave it to me this year, so let me know who's interested. And it's the original.
@@alfonsorosado3526 A lot of folks have those. The real question is in knowing what to look for. That question can only be answered by looking at hundreds, if not thousands of coins and becoming familiar with what should be there and what should not. 6,868,530 of the Silver 1971-S IKE's were minted yet this one, this particular one, did not fall into that 6,868,530 number which is what makes it so rare.
You know, for a very rare coin, it sure seems like EVERYBODY here has that same exact coin. 😳 I always thought that if a coin was considered rare, it was because there are very few of them. 🤔 If everyone had one, then they wouldn't be rare, now would they? 😉 I loved your video, and I appreciate the information. There are LOTS of people that have a 71, but that isn't what makes it valuable. Just because you have one doesn't mean that somebody will want to buy it. It has to have a special quality about it for it to be worth selling or buying. Just sayin. 🙃

Wow I had a 71 S Eisenhower stolen with many other mint, all of my silver mint and all but 3 silver proof sets and a Canadian 1916 sovereign coin ( only 5-6,000 minted) a 1888 Indian head cent and several other semi valuable coins such as 2 two cent silvers , a 3 cent nickel by a Bob Peterson..whom lives in Northport Fl. while he was 83 or 84 at time of visit and theft of coins in Aug.of 2020 . also he was my MIL boyfriend with a retirement check of his own and a part time job , while i had lost my job during covid , and am only in my 50s . He looks the epitome of a Gigalo ! These coins were all passed down to me from my dad who was a veteran ..the police where I live would not even call Sarasota County as legally they were supposed to do , so I had no chance of getting my things back that I need the money stream from .
Thank You for pronouncing my name correctly! 99.99% of the population cannot pronounce my name correctly, or better yet as I do, but I do understand why and take no offense. Most want to pronounce it as "Lied-stun" giving the 'y' a hard sound yet it is correctly pronounced "Lid-stun" with a soft 'y'. At least, that is the way I was taught to pronounce it. Is it possible that the only reason its three of these prototype coins is because of the minting locations? S,D,P. I think I just finished looking at the S over D prototype in person. It has all the marking to the tee and has a growing like S under the D that is kinda in plain sight under magnified lens.

Who would you recommend for grading.
If they look perfect, it's all a gamble as you know, you can look up pcgs grading service price guide before you start spending $30.00 a pop, I've seen 70's Ike struck with 90p.silver experimental, ect. good luck 👍

What you have is probably just an ordinary run of the mill coin. The coin in this video had VERY special features that made it valuable. I'm not trying to bust your bubble, but there's a reason that these coins are considered rare. Just sayin. 🙃

Hello thank you for this info. Have a 1971 S proof coin that was originally in a blue case that shows the incomplete earth and light eagles breast also i believe i can see the split in the T of In God We Trust and ladtly its got a haxy look to it. My grandmother gave it to my mom for me in June of 1971. My mom was pregnant with me at the time. I was born in September of 71. If you have a little time could you please give me some advise on how i may go about proofing this coin? Im not sure if this is what i have here but to my untrained eye it does seem to have a lot of the same features! Thank you.
