I bought my Dream HO Scale Locomotive!

  • In the early days and years of my life I regularly visited my grandparents who lived near a steam tourist railway. Every weekend morning me and my Dad would head over there to visit them and we would wait until we heard the whistle and then run down to the tracks to watch the train go by on its first morning run to Wakefield. The railway closed in 2011 and the train has never run since. Ever since getting into model railroading I've always wanted a model of my childhood train (which might have been the cause of my interest in trains in the first place) so I decided to through caution to the wind and buy the locomotive I've always wanted. A Swedish Railways E2 steam locomotive.

You are right. From 10 to 16 I had an impressive 18 by eight foot HO trains set that I methodically maintained and upgraded. The day before my 17th birthday there was a tornadic storm that knocked out power for one week. The backup battery for the sump pump only lasted 8 hours. The basement filled with water and my nice train layout died a horrible slimey death. I was able to revive some locomotives and sell a few. But the vast majority of my layout was destroyed. Today, I still think of that layout. If I had space, I would start again without hesitation. Maybe I can do N or Z scale.

It was a really special addition to the collection since I spent a lot of time seeing it with my grandfather. Sometimes my parents would take the train as a date and he would look after me. We would wave to them as it passed his house and then race it to its destination to see them and watch them turn the locomotive around. He and the train are no longer with us so it’s just memories at this point but it’s nice to walk down memory lane.

Thought you might want to know this little anecdote about 909:
At the end of regular steam service on the Swedish state railways in the late 60s and early 70s most of the E2:s and other common classes were put in storage as the military wanted steam engines to be available in the event of war.
But during the early 90s the people that knew how to drive and maintain these engines where starting to retire and the decision was made to get rid of most of the stored locomotives and one was, as you know, sold to the Canadian tourist railway, however 909 wasn't one of the stored locomotives but one that had gone into preservation several years earlier.
But since SJ couldn't get one of the stored locomotives ready for delivery in time they made a deal with the society that ran 909 to trade one of the stored engines (number 1333)for 909 that subsequently ended up in Canada.
    Cheers from Sweden!

So cool to see that part of your childhood running around your layout. We always put a little of our childhood into our layouts when we build them. Little memories create great scenes. I hope you can complete the train, and maybe model your grandpa's house next to the tracks. With 3 figures representing you, your dad, and your grandpa waving to the engineer as it goes by!

That is a cool Swedish railways E2 class 2-8-0. Swedish railways number 909 was built built in 1907. It worked on passenger trains in the northern part of Sweden until 1945. When it was put into mixed Traffic Service. She was withdrawn from regular service in 1964 but it was kept in partial service until 1968. When it was put to the Swedish steam Reserve. In 1988 she was given a light overhaul. Then later sold to the Huil Chealsea Wakefield Railway the 909 and 244 and 9 coaches arrived in Montreal on June 18th 1992. Interesting the valve gear and cylinders are inside the frame. She was given modifications like a Diesel Bell, a 5 chime whistle and was converted to burn oil.

I didnt know inside cylinder'd ones got that big! Interesting! If you really wanted to go the extra mile, you could get some decals, and change out the 4s for 9s. Would actually be an easy job, however I'm not sure what you would do about the metal number thing on the cab, and headlight number.

When i do 1 day find (or kit bash my own) it will be the, Reading-Blue Mountain and Northern #425. I love this train. It runs from Port Clinton pa to Jim Thorpe PA. On a Heritage line. It could use a better bell but her whistle makes up for it. Plus the stars they have on the wheels. Love it. I have a short of it from 2019. Its upside down. i was the supervisor on the traffic control crew. and had quick grabbed my phone out of my pocket under my hi-viz saftey flagger pants. But i got a complete whistle blow. Herpa sold it after a brief period to Bachmann Industries and Bachmann moved production from Austria to China. Bachmann has expanded the Liliput range to cover continental European trains but most are still of German and Austrian train models. I have some older Liliput Austrian models of German locos and rolling stock.

Yea Bachmann and Hornby brought many old European model-train manufacturers in the 2000's and early 2010's like : Liliput, Rivarossi, Electrotren, jouief, Lima ... just to name a few. Sadly they also dictate the prices and quality too! (I have bad experience with Liliput locos by Bachmann unlike Liliput Austria)!

I have a few Liliput models, mostly rolling stock, my father was Spanish and he had a massive European HO collection from brands like Roco, Ibertren, Electrotren, Fleishmann, Liliput and a few American brands like Bachmann, Life-like, etc. When he passed away three years ago I got the entire collection out to start a layout, remembering old days. And I have to say that I think the price for European locos are okay compared to how expensive American locos are.
I honestly think American HO locomotives are overpriced $200-$300 bucks over the price it should have.

Very nice locomotive. Here in the Netherlands there is a preseverd railway down south near German borders. At that railway they also run a Swedish E2 class and 2 Swesdish B class loco’s with Belgium K1 coaches and some DB vt 95 railbusses. My dream engine is the German br 01.10 (4-6-2) pacific i purchased a marklin model. Still a really nice model
    Greetings from the Netherlands

It may be Bachmann, but the box says Lilliput, maybe they partnerned? Bachmann European puts out mostly high quality trains, some duds. Anyone else watch Sam's Trains channel will know, lol! As an American I've got a couple European projects in mind which are going to be quite the challenge. Good luck on your project!

Don't worry about it being a Bachman. Bachman UK and Bachman Europe AR manufactured to a different standard of design than Bachman US, and are generally higher quality.

SMT, quick tip. Pancake motors won’t work without syrup, especially maple syrup. Make it go Bugatti speed with some sausage and bacon

No doubt you've got the correct couplers on it now, but Kadee does four lengths of NEM 362 compatible knuckle couplers - nos 16, 17,18 and 19.

I have several German Lilliput 2-10-0s and I'm very happy with them. Lilliput was it's own company before being bought by the company that owns bachmann.

I know that story. When i was a child 3 to 8 yrs old. I lived in alma Michigan. On Grafton Street. Went to school at hillcrest elementary. We live 2 houses down from the tracks. My cousin still lives in house across street where the tracks go behind her house all the way to or past the school. This is where my story starts. To see them BNSF's Chessie's and GT go by was awesome for me and my brother(my baby brother). He passed han 2 just over 6 yrs ago. It was only me and him. So went 2 yrs where i couldn't deal with him not being with me. Inside i fell apart. Then i couldn't keep it in. Then i got my first train set. Ho for $30. With alot of track. In the box was the 040 o scale steamer i have now. It took me back to them days. Playing in front yard waiting for the train to go by. The we moved to carson city Michigan. My dad got race tracks and train set. We played all the time in bay window. It helped me but i ended up with almost 200 engines and 60 slot cars. I want a few more BNSF in different models and paint schemes along with chessie and GT. Like the lionel you have. 2 clips . this is the only GT i have. I have 1 BNSF. Wife got it for me this past xmas. Couldn't believe it. Brand new. I buy lots and fix up and repair them. Couldn't afford stuff growing up. So used or old was how we did it. Fixed everything. We didn't buy new unless it was a part to fix bad of course. I've repaired almost every engine i have minus few like lionels and the GS4 daylight. So when i get sad i goto my hobbies to get me through. Lately it's been nitro rc's. Been building a traxxas revo 3.3 from ground up. Have a nitro stadium truck and nitro drift car. Built a track did cpl vids haven't posted yet. Summer hobby and winter hobby. Enjoy new train. Beautiful dream. Beautiful train. Enjoy the memories each time you start that engine up and run it down that SMT mainline. Enjoy my friend... Enjoy...
