This is my favourite scene in the entire show just because it shows how horrified everyone at NERV is by what's going on, it's like everyone finally gets to experience the shock and violence that Shinji does every time he fights making him afraid to pilot again, especially how his screams play over the loudspeakers in the base while everyone's jaw is dropped. This, and when the EVA goes berserk and devours the Angel later on as the staff are stood outside watching and realising that the EVA's aren't the saviours they thought they were.

Honestly, I feel so sad to toji he was literally telling shinji that he was sorry for treating him the way he did and he wanted to show him that he will help him fight angels. Honesty, they should of kept Toji as the pilot in the rebuild movies
on top of the fact that he cared for his hospitalized sister. Even had her transferred to a better hospital. That was his only condition to pilot the eva or he wouldn't do it. He did all those things because he cared for his younger sister. Really got me feeling some type of way. Shinji told to terminate Unit-03, only to be forced by the dummy plug by the command of his cold father, only to find out it was Toji in that entry plug. This episode was so sad. Toji getting hurt all because he cared for his sister, Shinji dealing with more psychological trauma and betrayal, and even the classrep, preparing lunch for Toji. This episode was the major turning point into darker plots. End of Evangelion took the darkness to a whole new level.

But it just doesn't have the same feel to it. Now, if they took the detail and beauty of the rebuild and used the same feel as the original... Man, that'd be fantastic.
i think what is special that is absent in the rebuild is the color scheme with the orange sky with the eva being shadowed out, gendos demented smile and evas roar all culminate in such a way that cant be rivaled by the rebuild scene, not to mention we get all the build up of the class rep making the meal and how excited she is to see him tommorow, gets me every time.
Also, making Asuka the pilot and telling Shinji that she was the pilot just didn't have as much power as the original. Shinji refusing to kill Unit 03 on the basis of his own principles as a human being and then discovering that the Dummy System nearly killed his best friend had a lot more power.

alejandro rodriguez I actually really respect Evangelion because if it weren’t for Evangelion making an impact in the Japanese animation industry, then Berserk wouldn’t be introduced in the Japanese mainstream and I love Berserk.
I disagree. The new movie literally showed even more of Eva-03's guts being sprayed all over. The only thing that made this scene better than the Rebuild is the music.
@@raidenthenctzenwithinsomni4961 I think the OG is better. In the movie Shinji can't see what's happening, while in this one he's forced to watch unit 01 crush his best friend against his will
@@raidenthenctzenwithinsomni4961 The composition/cinematography is far better in the original. The shot of Unit-03 silhouetted against the setting sun is a classic trope reminiscent of films like Apocalypse Now. Detailing the foreground during that shot during the Rebuilds ruin the aesthetic of it. Take any creative writing/directing/architecture class and you will be taught that "Less is More". Cinematography > budget.
@@raidenthenctzenwithinsomni4961 adding more gore doesn’t make a scene better. The limited gore is what makes this scene disturbing to me. You get subtle horrific scenes, but enough to disturb you. In the rebuild it is to much it’s not as impactful. The cinematography is also in my opinion better.
@@celtic6367 bullshit, is never presented that way, gendo decided that without any evidence as ritsuko was not present, and to the audience the angel is show as the infection over the dummyplug or even the liquid that is spread over eva00 arm
@Michael when they broke eva03 neck the angel is done, they killed that angel that was a computer virus and they didnt blow up magi, I guess there is a single purpose on destroying the eva03 on both series and manga and is to show how much of a dick gendo is
@@lynnmcneely7549there was never concrete evidence of that being true or false, so we will never know for sure. But i think that the angel only needed to infect the core. I also don't have concrete evidence of this, but given how unit 1 moved with no entry plug inserted in a few occasions, i would believe that the angel was using toji as a hostage and nothing more. Kinda like "i have one of them, they can't kill me or they will risk losing the pilot". Sorry for the long comment it's just that i love speculating about eva
The music really makes this scene for me, the track sounds so epic and triumphant as if it's a moment of the hero overcoming the enemy in stark contrast to the sheer brutality of the visuals that even the cast can barely stand to watch and the fact that the audience knows Shinji is essentially being forced to murder one of his only friends without even knowing.
Not sure if anyone will ever read this, but I wanted to give my thoughts on the songs used in this version and the Rebuild version. I get that Rebuild went for a more thematic song choice, making the lyrics relevant to the events unfolding while the overall tone was incredibly depressing and somber, but I still don't think it even fits what is happening in this scene. This scene is very depressing and sad, sure; Shinji essentially being forced to nearly kill his best friend is something that nobody should ever have to go through, and is very understandably depressing. However, to me, the goal of this scene wasn't "to be depressing", the goal of the scene was to demonstrate the strength of the dummy plug system. It was to show how gruesome and powerful the Evangelions can be, and the music used reflects that so well. Coupled with the screams from Shinji and the disgusted reactions from everyone besides Gendo, the scene wasn't trying to be depressing; it was trying to be horrifying. People like to say that the song is only used because it's "epic" and is used because it's "another angel fight", but I completely disagree. Thanks for anyone that made it through.
Highly agreed especially if you can believe that Eva's are pretty much a human. The scream of misery/pain/ anger at 0:35 just adds so much more depth to the whole situation as well. Something primal.
The evas have a bad tendency to kill and/or assimilate any adult who tries to pilot it and therefore Nerv had to make do with who could pilot the evas because they had no other choice and it wasn't until later in the series when they came up with the dummy plug
@@blakelancaster4482 which btw raised a lot of confusion on my side. They tried activating the dummy plug on eva-01 during testing but the eva rejected it (her mom). But this time it blatantly accepted the dummy plug. Maybe the plug only works when shinji is inside
I'll admit that the scene where Eva-03's arms fall limp looks WAAAAAY better here than in the Rebuild version. Covered all in shadows is an amazing touch. Also, in the recap version ('Death' segment of Death & Rebirth), adding Kensuke's explanation of why Toji was pissed at Shinji was all the more hurtful.
Dude every time i watch this scene i feel genuine pain . I feel like the worst part is that toji could feel literally everything what was happening. Just imagine getting your head smashed in, then getting your entire body torn up, piece by piece, before finally getting CRUSHED. like OOOOOF bro why you gotta do him dirty like that, bro was on a redemption ark too. Thank god bro survived but JESUS
Don't worry, he didn't feel anything else besides getting crushed. The connection between the eva and the pilot is severed after ejection no matter if the entry plug gets out or not
>Be Toji's mom >Die >Wake up in a giant body with metal restraints surrounding you >Be reunited with your son >Get possessed >Be ripped apart as your son not only watches, but experiences your pain as well >Die
Ambivalence is interesting because it’s the last episode of the show where things are “normal.” The happy dynamics of the action arc end and we stop seeing the silly interactions at school. Every episode from here on out hits hard and is full of heavy events like Shinji quitting then being trapped in the Eva, Kajis death, Asukas mental breakdown, Rei II’s death and the destruction of Tokyo 3, Ritsuko being imprisoned for destroying the dummy system, and Shinji killing Kaworu. All the characters become too sad and preoccupied to even enjoy each other.
@@robotzombie4754 It's the monster inside 03 that's screaming, just like when eva-01 goes berserk it starts roaring. The evas are all pretty much artificial angels that are only being kept in control by the armor. So the armor is the mech, the real machine is under it.
I will never forget this scene. It made he shake and almost throw up, so brutal and violent. I was maybe 11 or 12 at the time, back in the Wild West days when anime was still so new and we had no idea what it could be
You kinda forgot about the part where the pilots feel everything the eva's feel and that disabling and crippling coudl actually diable and cripple the actual pilot.
This scene is SO FUCKING GOOD. I remember being on edge beacuse first i did not know who was in the eva-03 (yes it heavily implies it is that kid that i forgot the name, but i thought it was a trick and was someone else), then the horrifing way it goes berserk, shinji and everyone is scared shitless. And then the MUSIC, the way the music is this heroic, like we are staring at something so magnificent, like we are watching our hero going victorious against the odds, wich is how shinji dads feels but not how everyone else feels, showing he is in control. I love this scene, it is my favourite in the hole show (English is not my main language)
Don’t get me wrong the rebuilds do an amazing job with scene but the original series just does such a good job at letting it stick. They let it really sink in.
Technogist I doubt he did considering Nerv's failed attempt to eject the plug which probably severed the connection to the Eva before it got ripped apart
Santiago Scarpino TBH I really liked he did that. Shinji's character needed more interactions like that, and it also makes Toji's death a little more sad.
Still has that one big flaw of them not unplugging the dummy after the threat has clearly been neutralized. Let's let him destroy the other pilot and his plug, what could go wrong?!
In this version of the scene it uses “The Beast ll” and I feel like it’s more just showing how truly strong the evas are alone. While the rebuild uses Kyou no Hi wa Sayonara which just seems like it’s showing everyone the trauma Shinji is going thru
This was the exact episode that made be go from being incredibly resentful towards gendo to downright wanting to do to him what unit 01 was doing in this video
This is arguably the single greatest episode in all of animation for me... the way the tension is built up the entire episode, the way they use the cuts to add to the brutality, the voice acting everything comes together in the pinnacle of the golden age. A masterpiece of directing
@glcn11 This is one of the reasons why I fell in love with NGE in the first place. In virtually ANY other show, movie, book or whatever, the wussy/cowardly main character somehow manages to suck it up and grow a pair in order to save the day, be it at the end of or intermittently throughout the story. Not so with dear, dear Shinji Ikari, though...
A dark fan theory was that all the MP-Evas that Askua fought in End of Evangelion had entry plugs that had "Kaworu" written on them because they were "piloted" by Shinji's classmates but under the control of a dummy plug system based on Kaworu's brain waves.

Must have been painful getting torn to shreds and having to experience it all, unable to move because your nerves have been cut off.
Unit 03’s body was crippled in NGE it was killed after Unit 01 ripped it’s chest plate off and destroyed the core
Which is stupid cause 03 could have exploted to hurt 01
But the took the explosions of rebuild🙄
It was probably paralyzed
Also the rainbow only appears after 01 bites the capsule
Its alive here too, thats why he screams after the neck snap, but since its paralized it cant move..kinda like people who have neck accidents but are paralized, alive but lost their complete movility
and the thing that's really strange is that Toni only lost his leg
xx get it If I remember right, in the manga he dies.
Oh, I love when in the end Shinji smells his hand and thinks "I still have the smell of blood"
SO.GOOD.
Who the fuck is Toni
Danya Kat-sucky Tony the tiger
Toji died in the manga
He lost an arm too.

Evangelion was my favorite manga/anime but then Berserk comes... Berserk is my religion XD
alejandro rodriguez I actually really respect Evangelion because if it weren’t for Evangelion making an impact in the Japanese animation industry, then Berserk wouldn’t be introduced in the Japanese mainstream and I love Berserk.
Nice system of a down pic
The Dummy Plug is the WORST autopilot ever.
Well it got the job done
It was never programmed to follow morals or ethics
It's designed to kill the enemy. Eva unit 03 was the enemy.
chistine lane indeed unit 03 was compromised due to complete takeover by a parasitic fungus-like Angel named Bardiel
"That's not your business, old hag."
0:54 getting hit with a Falcon Punch on your last stock
Lmao this comment tho
Falcon Paaaaaawwwwnchhhh
I didnt think of the falcon punch. it makes that scene better lol
The TV show animation is limited and still tells me more than new movies
Toji would’ve been such a badass pilot smh
0:35 "ok, its neutralized, stop the dummy plug, lets recover the eva03 in case we needed against another angel or seele" -no one on nerv
Eva 03 WAS the angel, the entry plug and toji could have been saved and/or salvageable, but unit 03 couldn't
@@celtic6367 bullshit, is never presented that way, gendo decided that without any evidence as ritsuko was not present, and to the audience the angel is show as the infection over the dummyplug or even the liquid that is spread over eva00 arm
@Michael when they broke eva03 neck the angel is done, they killed that angel that was a computer virus and they didnt blow up magi, I guess there is a single purpose on destroying the eva03 on both series and manga and is to show how much of a dick gendo is
@@celtic6367 the angel need the plug to be inside to possess the eva
@@lynnmcneely7549there was never concrete evidence of that being true or false, so we will never know for sure. But i think that the angel only needed to infect the core. I also don't have concrete evidence of this, but given how unit 1 moved with no entry plug inserted in a few occasions, i would believe that the angel was using toji as a hostage and nothing more. Kinda like "i have one of them, they can't kill me or they will risk losing the pilot". Sorry for the long comment it's just that i love speculating about eva
Gendo smiling like: "Just killed a child, feeling good".
This is the best scene on my life.
I felt like I was Shinji when I was watching this scene, I just kept frantically screaming STOOOOOOOP! NOOOOOO! at the TV
@@Defenestration700 because he's not autistic
@@Defenestration700 because he has a thing called empathy
I think they are both disturbing in their own ways. But yeah the build up in a movie’s limited run time does not carry character development as well.
The beast theme is not epic its actually horrifying
I always wondered how they clean everything up
Ah, they didn't tell you? The Evas have progressive mops and buckets.
Wrong, they did what they normally do
They used bleach and then the bucket and mop
You guys, really.....they have Wall'E clean up.
demonzero677 giant WALL'e that looks like Eva-01? Damn, i'd buy one!
Big hose
Why is 14yo kid has to deal with this
The evas have a bad tendency to kill and/or assimilate any adult who tries to pilot it and therefore Nerv had to make do with who could pilot the evas because they had no other choice and it wasn't until later in the series when they came up with the dummy plug
Me too bruh i having PTSD while seeing this even the scream 😞
Don't worry, he didn't feel anything else besides getting crushed. The connection between the eva and the pilot is severed after ejection no matter if the entry plug gets out or not
You want a funny joke ? Toji dies in the manga
>Be Toji's mom
>Die
>Wake up in a giant body with metal restraints surrounding you
>Be reunited with your son
>Get possessed
>Be ripped apart as your son not only watches, but experiences your pain as well
>Die
Interessting... But soul inside Unit-03 is unknown.
This scene literally had me in tears

The fact that you can hear toji screaming in pain in 0:36 as eva 03 is traumatizing
Thats not Toji,its Bardiel screaming
@@robotzombie4754 It's the monster inside 03 that's screaming, just like when eva-01 goes berserk it starts roaring. The evas are all pretty much artificial angels that are only being kept in control by the armor. So the armor is the mech, the real machine is under it.
@@riko11096 no wonder they said they needed a weapon with the same power as the angels
OH.
Ejecting an Eva's entry plug always severs the connection to the pilot even if the plug doesn't always make it out
0:55 I told you NOT TO TOUCH IT!
WalrusGuy's RUclips Poop of Arthur's Big Hit brought me here.
Lmao, actually I saw the youtube poop first before NGE and when I finally got to this scene my jaw just dropped haha.
I love this scene, it is my favourite in the hole show (English is not my main language)
toji :(
I don't care what people say about anime, this is badass.
This is about the point the series starts to get really crazy ^^
1:49 the voice actor for Shinji… I love you
It hurt me a lot to see this scene, it's perfect
In my opinion, the most powerful scene in anime.
This scene wrenched at my heart.
I TOLD YOU NOT TO TOUCH IT
Don’t get me wrong the rebuilds do an amazing job with scene but the original series just does such a good job at letting it stick. They let it really sink in.
I’d like to add that the lighting and cinematography is very reminiscent of Ultra Seven. I love that.
0:55 if you slow it down, when unit 1 punches unit 3, you can see an eyeball fly out
Honestly I'm still shocked that Toji survived this.
Not in the manga he did.
What parents think will happen if they let their kids play M rated games
What? They will pilot a colossal 80 meter cyborg angel monster and kill another colossal 80 meter cyborg angel monster?
@@Defenestration700 Of course!
that fucking punch to the face. it blew my mind the first time watching.
Well tell that to Omni man
Pretty sure it also blew Unit 03's mind
Messed up knowing that Touji felt what the Eva was feeling.
Technogist I doubt he did considering Nerv's failed attempt to eject the plug which probably severed the connection to the Eva before it got ripped apart
The scene where the dummy plug crushes off Toji's Capsule shocked me but I always came back watching to this scene just to see Gendo smile
Here lies Toji Suzuhara's legs and spine
Gendo: What a baby.
am i the only one who thinks they should have let toji die
to make it more impact full for shinji
Santiago Scarpino TBH I really liked he did that. Shinji's character needed more interactions like that, and it also makes Toji's death a little more sad.
toji died in the manga
Anno wanted to kill Toji off but the studio wouldn't let him if I remember correctly
Everyone’s life sucks enough already, IMO. Too much grimdark ruins everything.
in the manga he also knows he is going to fight Toji so this scene would made much more sense, and yes he dying was better.
EVA-01 went overboard with the exorcism💀
Still has that one big flaw of them not unplugging the dummy after the threat has clearly been neutralized.
Let's let him destroy the other pilot and his plug, what could go wrong?!
@TheMegaUzumaki It isn't just Gendo there tho. People would have said something.
Gendo is the literal fucking devil, what did you expect!?
Shinji: Refuses to fight Eva-03
Gendo: *Activates Dummy System in response*
Shinji: *Surprised Pikachu Face*
In this version of the scene it uses “The Beast ll” and I feel like it’s more just showing how truly strong the evas are alone. While the rebuild uses Kyou no Hi wa Sayonara which just seems like it’s showing everyone the trauma Shinji is going thru
0:09 bro uses the Homer Simpson technique

...But then she went for a plug pod with a kid in it
This is arguably the single greatest episode in all of animation for me... the way the tension is built up the entire episode, the way they use the cuts to add to the brutality, the voice acting everything comes together in the pinnacle of the golden age. A masterpiece of directing
For some reason that scene where he crushed the entry plug was the only moment in the entire show to fuck me up
For the first time I realize EVA-03/Bardiel its alive after the neck snap hence the scream but was left completely paralized from the neck down
@glcn11 This is one of the reasons why I fell in love with NGE in the first place. In virtually ANY other show, movie, book or whatever, the wussy/cowardly main character somehow manages to suck it up and grow a pair in order to save the day, be it at the end of or intermittently throughout the story.
Not so with dear, dear Shinji Ikari, though...
At the end of Evangelion he grows a par and rejects the human instrumentaliation program
A dark fan theory was that all the MP-Evas that Askua fought in End of Evangelion had entry plugs that had "Kaworu" written on them because they were "piloted" by Shinji's classmates but under the control of a dummy plug system based on Kaworu's brain waves.
What’s bugs me is I actually wanted to see Touji become a eva pilot and battle angels alongside with shinji
0:35 Eva 03’s roar is actually horrifying
The power to murder is dummy plug system but it still need a host can’t won’t by itself
