Every dept should have a yearly audit by an outside firm. It does cost thousands but it is good to know that all of that taxpayer money is being used responsibly.
No lie, my homi3 was pulled over with a puffco worth at the time about $200-300 and like 5 grams of weed concentrate. Legal in Illinois and Michigan both legal states illegal in Indiana and she took everything without writing it up. There is no training for elected officials. States need to make laws requiring internal controls and annual audits for all public entities. School boards and town councils are run by people with no knowledge of basic accounting rules. They should require that a CPA be hired to present the budget statements at the monthly meetings and to point out problems. One school district faced bankruptcy because the treasurer was a retired teacher who reccommended teacher pay raises when there was not enough money in the budget to support it. The board assumed she knew what she was talking about. The state then made laws about the educational backgrounds of people before they can become treasurers among other checks in the system.
