Awesome detail reviewed. I believe you’re the only person to mention what it is like to drive with it. That’s also an important factor since the whistling noise can annoy people.
I do not have any wind noise on my Falcon 1. The bottom rails fit almost exactly inside a FrontRunner Slimline roof rack so that there is no gap between the clamshell and the rack. One time I had it pulled closer to the rear, resulting in a 1/8" gap between the clamshell and the rack, and this caused a whistling noise. Once I pushed the tent forward and removed the gap, the noise went away. You might try moving your tent forward to eliminate wind between the rack and the tent.
Very good informative review of the Rooftnest! We kind of wish our iKamper RTT has rack for mounting other stuff on top of it, and wish it is lower in profile. But after upgrading our mattress to the Exped MegaMats and figured out how to store sleeping bags and small blanket in it, we love ours. Ability to store bedding inside the RTT is a plus for sure especially for those long trips that you need storage inside the Jeep.
I'm currently looking at a used Falcon XL... Especially like it for the slim design and ability to get it into my garage on my WK2. Finding this video was timely. Thanks!
Great review! I have the same model on my FJ. I recently removed the 2 cross bars on top and the wind noise was reduced by 50-60%. Still has quite a bit wind noise compared to just my rhino rack pioneer platform previously. But removing the cross bars helped a lot on my setup. My wife noticed it immediately without me telling her I did anything.
We use a falcon pro. I have been trying to find the cause of the whistle also. I think it is related to the front of the tent and channels. A temporary solution we use is wrapping the front of the tent with material when we go onto longer distance travels. Love the fast set up and take down with the roof nest. Also hate the mattress and have ordered a topper to replace it with. Hope it is in before our trip this weekend.
@@4XTRAIL I have an idea i am trying as soon as the rain stops for the whistle problem. The topper we ordered is way to soft to be of use. Going to try a few and will send a link when we find an acceptable one.
Thanks Dean! I always thought it would be cool to sleep inside the Jeep for solo adventures - I just never seem to have enough room with all of my gear 😂
nice video we were gonna get a roofnest but we have a little one on the way so we are looking into a pop up camper now. we have been using the gazelle tent its a great tent but im tired of being on the ground
Yeah for sure. Someday I’d like to build or find a good deal on a teardrop with offroad suspension. There are some cool pop up options out there too - hope you find a great one.
Appreciate it! I never did and have since sold the tent. Placing small pieces of foam in the front of the channels or at various places along the channels might help?
SO Happy to have found you…and we are local as well. Do you think this will fit on an Audi Allroad. More roof room than your jeep but not as much as the white truck in the video.
Hey Kyle! Thanks for the comment. Not sure of the Allroad’s roof dimensions but I’d guess this tent would be about perfect. You’d just need a set of cross bars that are rated for RTTs (and make sure the side rails on your audi are rated for the weight as well). I’ve seen RTTs on vehicles like yours before. Hope that helps!
I have the exact same tent, I don't have anything attached to it and get no wind noise. It's probably an attachment you have on. And yeah the ladder does squeak 🤣
Yeah! Needed crossbars with more clearance to easily mount all four corners so haven’t used the tent on the 4Runner for any real trips. If the dynamic rating is over 150lbs on the factory rails then should be good to go. Usually static rating is much higher so dynamic is what is limiting. Thanks for the comment!
Great review! Have you figured out what the cause of the whistling is? I wonder if you could get some 3d printed "farings" for the side channels and the front? I'm definitely checking these out and your review was extremely helpful. I used to live in AZ, now I'm up in Oregon looking to camp in Mount Hood National Forrest.
Thanks for the comment, Amber! Yeah, that’s a great idea. I do think it’s the channels that cause the whistling so finding something to block them with might help! Mt Hood is fantastic - so beautiful up there 🙌🏼
found it from your previous posting! had to check it before replying to this. BTW, were you able to access to space for putting mounting kit without problem? Looks challenging to me as it's very low and wonder if I can use a tool to access to the mounting area. Any advince?
Hey Hyoun! Yes - it is quite low clearance under there. I’m still working on an easy mounting solution and will post a video when I have one. Basically using single bolts from the tent down through the holes in the cross bars. There is just enough room that I think I can access all four corners but I haven’t fully mounted it yet. Stay tuned for video!
@@erikhernandez2326 no, the crossbars on the 4Runner are from Victory 4x4. Unfortunately I was unable to find an easy way to mount to them because of how low profile they are so I can’t recommend them for this application.
Can you remove the ladder while you're already inside the tent? I'm just concerned this ladder can be used for easy access by intruders including bears. TIA.
You can yes, it would be a little challenging to collapse it from the tent but I’m sure it’s doable and you could stash it under your roof rack or even inside the tent once it’s collapsed.
Haha it’s actually a custom design from our men’s group at my church. If you want, hit me up via the “about” tab and I’ll try to see if we have any extra lying around I could send you 🤙🏼
Hello, I notice that there isn’t a cross bar under the front part of the tent. My set up is the same for crossbars but I’m not sure if that’s an issue with the tent? Is the balance still fine?
Hey Claudia! I haven’t used the tent on the 4Runner but on my Jeep (the black wrangler featured in this video) it does overhang in the front but it’s been just fine! In my experience, as long as you have 4 anchor points that are far enough apart and somewhat near the middle of the tent, it will hold just fine. If you can monitor it on the highway, such as through your moonroof and watch for any fluttering that would be good. But with 4 anchor points that have good spacing apart from each other you should be fine!
We have a hardshell as well but we went with the Free Spirit Recreation Evolution. It's a bit thicker so we can store the sleeping bags inside. ruclips.net/video/mAoO-07Di7Y/видео.html
Its funny how similar (identical) this tent is to my $1260 amazon tent is. Just going to asume these tents are all china made and each company gets the emblems added.
Wrap a bungee cord around the front cross bar, it will get rid of the whistling

Truth! And your mattress sounds infinitely more comfortable than mine 😂
Definitely makes it WAY more comfortable with the family in a roof top tent!! Great video
