Notice he said, “The movies weren’t that great”. Elvis knew that as well and commented on that. Frankly, it doesn’t matter that Elvis COULD’VE been a terrific actor - or not. I think he was wrong to pursue acing as much as he did. His superstar, out-of-this world talent was MUSIC. This poor, uneducated kid from the The South, who had this phenomenal talent, need a mentor, a manger, who appreciated that and could guide him to develop that to its fullest potential. IMO, Elvis did not reach his full potential musically.

His movies were great ,as a child I would go every day and twice on Saturday and Sunday. Lincoln movies in Kearny NJ was 50 cents, and when I knew an Elvis movie was coming to town , I would carry bags of groceries for the seniors on my block they would "tip" me a dime. I would save up the money , so I could go to every showing. Elvis would have been great in a Star is born , Kris Kristofferson was no Elvis. Elvis and Barbara Streisand , as lovers would have been even more unbelievable then Babs and Kris! Elvis with Ann Margaret in Babs place would have been a block buster ! It would have been on fire. It would have been right up there with Casablanca ! In my version , Elvis would have gotten an Oscar !

The Presley family came from very humble beginnings having absolutely nothing. Elvis signed with Colonel Parker and was a millionaire within 18 months after signing his first contract.
Colonel Parker was the original Scam Artist of Scam Artists. A snake with three heads. Elvis trusted Parker, Parker knew it, and he took major advantage of that trust. Parker began gambling in Vegas and got in deep deep debt in 1973. In order to pay off his debts, Parker sold all of Elvis's royalty rights to the music and movies prior to 1973. After 1973, the only was Elvis was making money was performing on stage in concerts. Elvis was on a treadmill and performed over 1,500 concerts in the last seven years of his life. Elvis died at the young age of 42 and much of that can be blamed on Colonel Parker.

Elvis did do some of his own stunts.
He got hurt filming "Roustabout" when he wrecked through
the white fence ended up with a scar above his left eyebrow.
Filming was delayed a wee bit too I think...
They probably said after the accident thatche had to use a
    double.
But I think he did his own stunts a few other times, not sure

Elvis did his best films prior to the Army. That is because to do art you have to have time alone ~ It is no wonder that the films subsequent were mediocre. It is impossible to be a reflective artist when you are playing pranks. It is wonderful to have fun - but the price is that the artistry is almost assuredly lost. The fun can offer a fun movie - as Elvis movies with the Memphis Mafia on set after the Army, indeed were.
