  • Your Welding Helmet Need Glasses. Do you wear glasses ,and wish you did not need them for welding.I now use a auto darkening Welding Helmet but also wear glasses to see up close and i find it to be a hassle. They make a lens that goes in the inside of your welding helmet that can take place of your glasses when welding. The Magnifying lens comes in many different strengths and is a real help when welding. I know the lenses are available for the old small lens manual helmets and the auto darkening welding hoods. I never liked the big lens manual welding helmets so i do not know if Magnifying lenses are available for those welding helmets or not.

Most auto darkening helmets now days (2020) have "true color" and adjustable darkness which greatly improves visibility. The technology has shifted into helmets costing as little as $50.00 or $350.00 depending on your requirements.

Cool, didn't know those existed, since I got my eyes lasered my close in welding has gotten really difficult, a reading version of those lenses would be perfect,

  • @shawandrewm

    1) I know they make "true-color" ADF helmets now, fwiw.
    2) I read somewhere -- and this is consistent w we see in the vdeo, reading the magnification off the lens frame -- that you're supposed to insert the cheaters w the frame writing facing towards you (so you can read it). I think this works out to "flat face inward, curved face out". [EDIT: I just checked mine; I had it wrong: it's flat out, curved in. BTW, my 2-diopters are fantastic!]

I think I need a magnifier for my hood. The weld pool when I weld with my everlast mig welder isn't as clear as when I was younger. The eyes are getting older.

I know this is an old video, but I'll comment anyway. I've been using cheaters, and I've found the glass lenses hold up better, and what I mean is that you can keep them clean with windex or soap and water. I've found the plastic lenses, although they don't break when dropped, get really scratched up from too many cleanings.

If one uses this magnifier lens then is it correct to assume you do not need to ever use/buy the thin plastic protective lens covers?

I love your video. I didn't know they made a " cheater lens " for welding helmets. I was searching on the internet for magnification leneses, which keep showing dental magnification lenses which I don't need. This is exactly what I needed. Thank you.

Over the years I've looked, off and on, for some company that makes prescription "cheater" lenses.
I have developed poor near vision in one eye but mostly good in the other AND double astigmatism (not double but triple image) in each eye - the incredibly good eyesight of my youth has long gone, as has some of my welding skill as I have trouble seeing, even with my glasses, the weld.

    • @wtbm123

This actually came up in a completely different video's comments (corrective lense inserts for virtual 3D headsets) where I said much the same thing. A Mr William Nalker who is the Vice President / Co-Founder of Reloptix who made those inserts saw my comment and expressed an interest in the idea - he's a hobby welder who also wears glasses and expressed an interest in following up on the idea, and he works in product design...
You, and any of your friends/colleagues with similar issues may like to let them know there are other people out there interested in that sort of product.

Not as yet, not can I confirm he will - he expressed interest in the idea a couple of weeks ago, with a couple of other suggestions for investigation, and that's all I know.

ESAB Sentinel A50 has that yellow lens. I have only seen one person using it and he seems to like it but I'm far too cheap to spend that much money. I myself use Chicago Electric Auto-Darkening (no grind mode on this particular model) which works just fine.
