After drinking a few beers I recorded this video discussing all of Witchfinder General's studio albums!!! (Note: When I say Black Sabbath's "Isolation", I meant "Solitude". Again, I was a few beers in. Rock 'n' roll. Deal with it.)

Been listening to these guys since I was a teenager in the 80,s. I love witchfynder general!!
And yet you can't even spell their name correctly. 🙄
Fun Facts:
Phil used Laney amps just like Tony Iommi.
Bill Ward attended one of the WFG shows in 1981.
The Resurrected album is actually music that was made in 1984 for the 3rd album but the band split.
Brian Tatler and Phil Cope took lessons from the same guy back in the day.
The Friends of Hell tour only lasted a week in 1983.
That explains why the music on Resurrected is decent. Thanks for all these Witchfinder General fun facts. I'm impressed you know all this -- they're a fairly obscure band.
One of the monks in the back right on the Friends of Hell album is Derm the Germ.
The band also never toured for the Death Penalty album which is a shame. They played probably less than 10 or 12 shows in their lifetime.
They're my favorite band and have done lots of homework and correspondence with a few of them.
@@tyranonaut5469 Very cool, man. Yeah, like I said in the video: They had the goods, too bad they couldn't keep it together.
They were a world class heavy rock band but just had too many setbacks.
@@tyranonaut5469 tell me more, brother
i became obsessed with this band
I agree with you on most of the video. Severely underrated and one goddamn great band. I just happened to think I lost you is one of the better ballads I have ever heard. My opinion versus your opinion that's all.
Phil worked with my dad as a carpenter 's apprentice
I feel that if the song "Music" received much better promotion it would've been a massive hit, it's just a really fun, catchy tune.
your analysis of this band including the songs, the vibe, the perception (which as you mentioned by the early 80's would've been perceived as an old hippy heavy rock group), was absolutely spot on man. respect.
Thank you, ramon2008. It's much appreciated it.
FREE COUNTRY is such a great song... Witchfinder General rules! \m/\m/
I agree with both these statements. 🤘🏼🤘🏼
I don't know what's wrong with you. I lost you is one of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard.
Yeah, I created a video about Witchfinder General -- a band that's very obscure and underappreciated -- and I go off about how much I love the band and I review and praise their first two albums, but the one atypical ballad I'm not crazy about and you think there's something wrong with ME..!! 😜
Hey, nice video. I have been a fan of WG since 1983 and I wanted to tell you that you are correct about why they failed to achieve greater success: they were too much like Sabbath for the time; too much of a throwback act. Many people don’t realize it today, now that Black Sabbath is considered a classic band, but Sabbath was not very popular in the early 80s. In fact, they were widely considered washed up and has-beens. Yes, “Heaven and Hell” sold, but after that…small fan base. Most early 80s metalheads were into faster, higher-energy music. And you’re right-Sabbath seemed to get rediscovered in the 90s.
Thanks for watching and for your thoughts, John. Yeah, and even Heaven and Hell had an updated, less traditionally Sabbath sound. Witchfinder General were definitely out-of-step with their time.
Agreed thatWitchfinder General were out of step with the rest if the scene. They were probably the first of the 80's bands to follow in Sabbath's doom footsteps. A year or two later came Trouble and Saint Vitus from the U.S. with that same early Sabbath style and the Doom Metal genre was born.
It's videos like this that i like the most because it helps me become more familiar with bands I don't know a lot about. Love this Edwin!!!!
Thanks, Bob. I’ll try to do some more lesser known bands and albums in the future.
Loved this band back in the day ✌️
My beer...
Dude, this is the first video I've watched of yours and I loved the way you went about it. The way you described things were just perfect. I enjoyed every minute. You're the real deal.
Thanks, brother. Appreciate it.
my favourite band
Awesome favorite band to have. 🤘🏼
Awesome band. I too heard them first around 2005 and listened their records hundreds of times in the following couple of years.
They were so good I even liked resurrected lol
How did the algorithm bring me here? Hahaha that's nice. Thanks for sharing content about this awesome band
Thanks for watching and praise to the Algorithm Almighty!!
Awesome video man! I got into Witchfinder General and heavily into the NWOBHM also on the mid 00’s.I’ve been cranking “Death Penalty” since but I have never heard “Friends of Hell” You’ve made me wanna investigate 🤘🏻
MickW 85 Right on, brother!! 🤘🏼
My favorite band besides Cirith Ungol
Nice....love the Tee also
Thanks, man! I know you love the Sabbath!
Good to learn more about them. Casual listener of the 2 albums. Love the songs Free Country and Shadowed Images in particular. I had a friend in high school who liked them and I heard an interview with Metallica in 1982 where Dave Mustaine mentioned them when they were asked about their influences: "They're not an influence but they're great."
Joorum Cool, man. Never heard that Mustaine quote before. Thanks for sharing.
Shadowed Images ?
Loved your comments. I'm from Brazil and I listen these albuns when I was young in 80's... after I could find them in Deezer... simply loved them!!! Unfortunately there is not information about in Google or anywhere. I love Death Penalty and like a lot as well Friend of Hell!!! Agreed with everything you said! Congrats for your video!!!!
Thanks for watching and for your comments. Such a great band! 🔥🤘🏼
The singer from Sheavy emulates Ozzy pretty damn good as well.
Cool. I'll have to check Sheavy out...!!
or Astra singer!
listen to the weirding album
My second favorite band right after Priest! 🤘🤘
Love Priest too (did a two part video about 'em). Both bands are awesome! 🤘🏼🤘🏼
@@EddyCannistraci yeah i saw the Priest videos heavy metal for life man! 🤘🤘
Another great band, Count Raven. Both singers for some reason sound like Ozzy. First 2 albums are fire. Very good doom metal
🔥🤘🏼🤘🏼
I always thought Reverend Bizarre took a lot of inspiration from Witchfinder General. WG should have been a lot bigger than they were, they and Witchfynde (another band that were influenced by Sabbath)
Agree totally. Thanks for watching and for commenting.
GOLD
Where is Zeeb Parkes? No one knows what happened to him? He deserve a gold monument.
Kiddie rape. Sorry but it broke my heart too
@@Crankupuswhat ??
@@reginene It's really sad. "He's done," put it that way.
@@Crankupusyou got a source?
@@reginene unfortunately yes. It's someone very close to the situation. They know Zeeb personally, for many years, and Phil Cope. They are pretty well known in the underground Heavy Metal and the major label world, still.
Awesome video about the band. But you're wrong about the part that not many vocalists emulate Ozzy. If you listen to doom, you'll notice that a lot of singers emulate him in one way or another. I actually wanted to listen to WG but found this. I was amazed since most younger people(like me) have never heard of this band or pretty much anything outside of the popular band's circle. I discovered them in high school(18 years ago) and i have never stopped listening to them. I really wish they'd return though. I'm a Sabbath/Doom lunatic and this band is one of my favorites. I'll take Death Penalty over a lot of the so-called classics out there.
Thinking about it some more, I guess you're right about a lot of doom singers emulating Ozzy. I just think there's a certain scrappiness to his vocals they usually don't capture. Well, with the exception of Zeeb and maybe Wino from Saint Vitus and the Obsessed. Anyway, thanks for watching and for sharing your thoughts about the band. It's always cool to find other WG fans out there!
@@EddyCannistraci @Eddy Cannistraci I know what you mean. Yeah they don't have that scrappiness but the Count Raven dude pulls it off really well. He sounds just like him, only better. I'd recommend you to check out Forsaken(Malta). These guys should have been huge. No weak or generic songs. Straight A+ doom. One of my best discoveries. Reverend Bizarre and Lord Vicar are also a must. As for WG i was super happy when you mentioned that you really liked WG(the song) and No Stayer. As for the second song i love how the first 1:20 its kind of like a jam before blowing everyone's socks off with an ultra-heavy and awesome riff. I listened to all their stuff yesterday. Resurrected could have been their grand return if it weren't for the singer. The production was good, could have been more thick and full sounding. We would have had Death Penalty II. I love it when people make videos like this about awesome bands such as WG. Keep it coming!
@@Annihilation_0f_The_Wicked9066 Yeah, No Stayer is awesome. One of my fave WG tracks (which is why I used it for the intro) and, of course, I agree totally with you on Resurrected. I do like my share of doom metal but admittedly I've only listened to the older or bigger bands (Saint Vitus, Electric Wizard, etc). I'm gonna dive into all the bands you recommended. If you haven't already, you should subscribe to my channel. I did a handful of Sabbath videos (and plan to do another one in October). I don't know if you like NWOBHM stuff outside of WG, but I'm recording a Saxon related video next week.
@@EddyCannistraci Sorry for the late reply :D Electric Wizard is more of a new band compared to Saint Vitus, Trouble, Pentagram, and so forth. But that's just minor details. Oh! I'm mad about NWOBHM. I listen to it almost on a daily basis. Fist, Blitzkrieg, Satan, Saxon, Warfare, Pagan Altar being amongst my favorites! Yeah, sure! I'll subscribe. I watched some of your videos. I was very surprised when i noticed that you have an entire video about Motorhead's "Everything Louder" live album. If that isn't the single, most powerful live album, then i don't know which is
@@Annihilation_0f_The_Wicked9066 No worries and thanks for subscribing. And yeah, I'm the type of guy who'll do an "Everything Louder" review! (Motorhead's my fave band after all). Hope you enjoy the Saxon video coming up! I'm reviewing all their albums! Should be fun...!!
Stourbridge is located in central England near Birmingham. it is not a farming town. it is a former factory town that was a major producer of glass. Stourbridge pa is named after Stourbridge in England
Didn't know this. Thanks for dropping this knowledge.
@@EddyCannistraci Stourbridge is also home to NWOBHM legends Diamond Head.
Warlord was another great band from the 80's..only a full album and e.p. though I think....Cirith Ungol was my favorite.
I dig Cirith Ungol and own their first two albums. Gotta check out Warlord...!!
@@EddyCannistraci Warlord even had a live DVD when those first came out..they played with no crowd...just a smoke machine they borrowed from Slayer."Deliver Us is the name of the album"..I'm sure you would dig Warlord.
soviet invasion was awsome
The angry video game nerd brought me here
He's gonna take you back to the past alright! :)
Cool review, love this band. Sadly, Resurrected is trash. Have you heard their live record, Live 83'? Audio is a little rough, but it's worth a listen.
Yeah. I've listened to Live '83 (like you said rough audio but worth the listen, especially since there's so little available from this band). Always happy to see other Witchfinder General fans in the world!

Sex drugs rock and beer
Give credit to Dave montano who wrote and sang for them they like Sabbath but don't really like comparison was never meant to sound like that they cut second record rite after Metallica did ride the lightning same studio same week silvio produced it his voice is shot now all of em it's sad to cause they thought at time will always scream like Phil anselmo and pretty much a few moa later everybody voice in metal. Was shot zeeb is wily Dave and Jeff I no Dave owns rights to the band. They had some stuff like five yrs ago that wood have kicked such ass but there voices were so shot and all this shitty generation music hates them and so now they smoke and what u said did happen all us underground rockers are an endangered species now
it's too bad, really. They were such a great band. At very least music fans like me still listen to 'em...!!!
Dave montano?
Also dude, I really don't understand what you're trying to say :S
Huh? Dave Montano? Jeff? What are you talking about?
@@andrejz8954 Totally incoherent.
Most of Death Penalty is too light hearted ,and at times goofy . Burning a Sinner and Witchfinder General are the only songs that sounded like what I expected from a band called Witchfinder General. Same goes for Friends of Hell, the title track and Quiettus were the only Evil atmosphere captured. I am not saying that all Metal has to sound Evil or Witchcraft based ( the practice not the retro Rock act with that title) , but if you call your band Witchfynde, Demon, or Witchfinder General I expect some scary songs. With all 3 of the aforementioned NWOBHM bands you get the same, 2 or 3 tracks that are Halloween play list worthy, and the rest sound like demoes from Nightranger that weren't good enough to make it to their album . I will say although it certainly didn't belong on an album entitled Death Penalty by a band called Witchfinder General that No Stayer was a brilliant song , nice hooks, well written lyrically from a musical viewpoint, but stupid lyrically from a subject matter perspective.
The album, "Witchfinder General", received some criticism for the cover photograph, which featured topless model Joanne Latham. The photograph had been taken in the yard of St Mary the Blessed Virgin Church in Enville, Staffordshire, without the permission of the local Reverend. Latham was featured on the cover of "Death Penalty", the debut album by the heavy metal band Witchfinder General, which was released in 1982. She also featured on the cover of "Friends of Hell", their second album released in 1983.
The negative press from the album covers was a large contributing factor in the breakup of the band.
NB: Matthew Hopkins was the real Witchfinder General., when he was awarded that title in 1645 - the climactic year of the First English Civil War. Just a few decades later, the last execution for witchcraft in England took place in Exeter, Devon, when Alicia Molland was put to death in March 1684. By that stage, there was a move away from superstition to more enlightened perspectives, principally due to so much suffering so evident for so many centuries, i.e. the dawn of the Age of Reason.
Great rundown on a great might have been of Metal.
Thanks fort watching and for providing the above info.
