    The reporter getting his nuts squeezed reminds me of something similar happening to me in USAF SERE school.
    I was at the parachute training portion, which really was just a briefing and a few one-off exercises really. But the one where we practiced descending from being stuck high up (like as if we landed in the top of a tree) did me in almost. It's a platform high up that you just put on a chute harness and swing out off of, then you drop the decent line, detach the harness, and shimmy down the line. Well, I put on my harness and the guys at the station hooked me up and I swung out. Immediately I realized one of the straps that go around your thigh made it's way a bit north and basically squeezed half my scrote against my leg. My full body weight trying to make Nut Oil through an improvised press that was a 1" wide strip of webbing and 150lbs of fresh Airman.
    I started yelling "PULL ME BACK PULL ME BACK PULL ME BACK PULL ME BACK " but the guys refused, thinking I was having a panic attack over the fear of heights.
    "NONONO ITS MY NUTS"
    With the gravest look of concern on their faces, they immediately pulled me back on the platform.
    I adjusted and finished the course.
    Bonus, I saw a guy do a 5-point parachute landing when he drunkenly ran across a 7/11 parking lot and tripped over a curb. Crazy how that training just kicks in.

      That made me laugh quite a bit, thanks for sharing.
      As an ex-instructor, I always think it is really important to differentiate between a soldier being a little squeamish and a valid medical concern. You definitely had the latter.
      Once, during firing drills, I had a recruit with a busted ankle (I didn't know about it) and she was silent-crying during the drills. Thought she was sweating, because we were doing it in fuck-you-hot temperatures, so I just kinda brashly told her to wipe her glasses. Then I saw the tears and corrected my behavior. She wanted to continue, so I told her to take off her vest and only do the drills that didn't put any more pressure on her ankle and see a doctor afterwards (because, seriously, don't train, while injured!). She was happy about that.
      Literally twenty seconds later another recruit, who was in peak physical condition, complained about the heat. He got chewed out and we both ran for a bit, when the others were resting.

      The marines looked up to Doc Bryan for a few reasons. 1 was because he had been given very very good combat training in addition to his high level of medical skills. The Special Amphibious Reconissance Corpsman put guys like him on 1 of 2 tracks. Recon or the SEAL's. Possibly even DevGru. He was probably a more highly trained combatant than they were and had already been in combat wheres a lot of the battalion hadn't. 2 was he had zero quams about telling people above him what he thought. As technically Navy personnel he has this really wierd intermediate place where he gets away with a lot of stuff that normal Marines wouldn't. Young Marines look up to a guy who doesn't give a fuck like that. As for the grumbling I don't think it messed with their morale much because he just said what they were all were thinking, in the aggressive way that they were thinking it. But instead of being restrained like the marines he fires off. In the book he even describes himself as "an asshole."

    always thought gas mask look so fucking cool in the movies and they are, but upon joining the military and doing drills with them it became clear they are a fucking NIGHTMARE. Your sight is so fucking limited and good look breathing if you got in a situation where you had to sprint and run for a period of time. Aiming? yea right. I always prayed i don't care what happens just don't let me get into a combat situation and have to use a fucking gas mask.

      A memory that will never leave my mind till the day I die, is we were to do warning fires in the ground. So as a convoy approached us, we used 50s so every round bounced off the road and into the cab of the first truck. It was red mist and the back of the cab blew out. than god the truck broke left.. then it went to hell.

      During the invasion they were mainly dealing with poorly trained farmers. In the book, that this series is based on which is based on real events, they described the insurgents fighting as if they came straight out of some Hollywood war movie. Yes, thats how bad the insurgents were at combat.

    • @VT-mw2zb
      @VT-mw2zb 6 лет назад +26

      Many of the people they fought were not technically "insurgents". Some were regular armies. Interestingly, the part where the Marines were ambushed at night, at the bridge, and then killed a bunch of enemies who seemed to have learned combat skills out of movies. The next morning the Marines search the bodies of the fighters. One comment was the men was not regular army; they dressed in cheap but fashionable civilian clothes that wouldn't look out of place in an American university. The men were foreign volunteers from other parts of the world; their passports stamped with the word "Jihad". Saddam was calling for a Jihad against American invaders back then.
      Later the Marines rolled into town and came across an abandoned military outpost. The regular military fled some time before that. The Marines concluded that the regular military was contented to send these foreign volunteers out to fight while they themselves were sitting safe and sound in the barracks eating chicken and peanuts.

    • @nexttsar
      @nexttsar 6 лет назад +1

      The bottom line was that the Marine HQ sent them through that town for no reason. And the irregular Iraqis did not know how to shoot.

      Before the War, Sadam's Army had few live fire exercises. Only the Republican Guard trained realistically and had engaged the Kurds and the Assyrians. Literally, they could not shoot accurately and did not understand we owned the night.

    The cable channel HBO gave the go-ahead to a seven-part miniseries, based on Evan Wright's book about his experiences as an embedded reporter with the U.S. Marine Corps' 1st Reconnaissance Battalion during the Iraq War's first phase. The series is set during the invasion of Iraq, from late March to early April 2003. The miniseries was shot over a six-month shoot from mid-to-late 2007 in South Africa, Mozambique, and Namibia.[2] The primary production value aspired to was authenticity.[3][4][5] The miniseries was produced on a budget of $56 million.[6]
